THE LESSONA Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Book of Isaiah Chapter 45 beginning at the 21st verse

Thus says the Lord, “Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none besides me. "Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: `To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. "Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; to him shall come and be ashamed, all who were incensed against him. In the LORD all the offspring of Israel shall triumph and glory."

Psalm 22 Deus, Deus meus1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? * and are so far from my cry and from the words of my distress? 2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer; * by night as well, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are the Holy One, * enthroned upon the praises of Israel. 4 Our forefathers put their trust in you; * they trusted, and you delivered them. 5 They cried out to you and were delivered; * they trusted in you and were not put to shame. 6 But as for me, I am a worm and no man, * scorned by all and despised by the people. 7 All who see me laugh me to scorn; * they curl their lips and wag their heads, saying, 8 “He trusted in the Lord; let him deliver him; * let him rescue him, if he delights in him.” 9 Yet you are he who took me out of the womb, * and kept me safe upon my mother’s breast. 10 I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born; * you were my God when I was still in my mother’s womb. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near, * and there is none to help.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLEA Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Philippians Chapter 2 beginning at the 5th verse. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

From the Rector’s iPad

The various liturgical rites from Palm Sunday to Easter bring us to the observance of the origins of the Christian faith.

These rites and ceremonies are profound and solemn, they are rich in symbolic value and assist our meditation on those mighty acts by which Christ would bring salvation to the entire world.

Professor Patrick Regan tells us in an article entitled “The Three Days and the Forty Days” that in the early fourth century the Church’s annual celebration of the paschal mystery took the form of a festival lasting three days.

These three days, Maundy Thursday to Holy Saturday, are referred to as the Paschal or Easter Triduum.

Professor Regan states that during this time frame, the church ritually articulates, appropriates and meditates the central event of the Gospel - Jesus path and passage from death to life eternal.

It is vital to understand the significance of these days - in which over this three day period we celebrate the one event of Jesus’ return to the Father.

If we really take Christianity seriously it would be hard to ignore the event that is central to our faith.

We have an obligation to participate in these rites in order that we may better understand the faith we hold so dear.

We are encouraged to join this week in the hymns, scripture texts, euchological prayers and symbolic actions.

By doing this we allow ourselves to be immersed in the saving acts of Christ in order that we may better understand why we “do this” Sunday by Sunday and at our mid-week mass.

Furthermore it is this saving event that inspires to to strive towards the wholeness that formed our reflection during the lenten season.

This week let us remember those who are lonely, in pain or afraid. Let us help them to see that the agony of Good Friday gives way to new life in the celebration of the paschal mystery.

Let us join together across our various congregations this coming weekend, to meet, pray, reflect, meditate and walk together as we make this pilgrim journey and celebrate the joy of Easter.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon)Rector
