SRJAN 2K18

‘Management fest’ is the event that every student eagerly waits for. Apart from the fun, frolic

and platform that it offers to students to exhibit their talents, the fest is also an acid test of

students' managerial skills.

SRJAN is the annual Management fest celebrated by students of MBA at Institute of

Engineering & Management, Management House campus every year during February- March.

It was incepted in the year 2009 and since then, the best minds from b-schools across Kolkata

compete to test their business mettle. The Fest is famous for its creative challenging tasks, best in

class hospitality and unlimited fun.

SRJAN 2K18 had a spectacular three day buzz of enthusiastic participants on 17th

, 18th

& 19th

of

March 2018. It was filled with ideas, innovation, creativity, enjoyment and enthusiasm

contributed by the best minds from all across the city. Some of the most notable colleges &

Universities who participated include:

St. Xavier’s College, Heritage Institute of Technology, ILEAD, Guru Nanak Institute of

Technology, Viswa Bharti University, Adamas University, University of Engineering &

Management (UEM) among others. Notable participants from school include:

Don Bosco, Liluah, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Education, Saltlake among others.

Welcome, that’s how it all started! SRJAN 2K18 began on March 17, 2018 with big bang where

eminent personalities honoured the event with their presence.

Mr. Siddhartha Chatterjee, famously known as our very own original Topse was the Chief

Guest of the event while Ms. Subhashini Mistry (Padmashree Awardee) and Mr. Jimmy

Tangree were the Guests of Honour.

The Chief Guest and the Guests of Honour were felicitated by the Director, Dr. Satyajit

Chakraborty of IEM with flower bouquets, mementoes & gifts and were asked to enlighten the

students with their inspiring words.

Mr. Siddhartha Chatterjee, along with being our Topse, is currently the Vice President of

Calcutta Management Association (CMA), sister concern of AIMA, New Delhi. He is an

‘entrepreneur’ & ‘chartered accountant’ as well. With this stimulating background Mr.

Chatterjee is a man to listen to. He enlightened everybody with anecdotes from his life

experience, how he started his famous ventures, Bhojohari Manna & Maachlibaba, how at age

13 he met Satyajit Ray and faced camera for the role of Topse of Feluda series of films and

finally told the students to follow their hearts with of course permission from mind.

People were awestruck as well as emotional when Ms. Subhashini Mistry started speaking. She

lives in a village called Hanspukur just about 20Km south of the City center of Kolkata. Her

husband died of gastro enteritis in the 70s. He was a poor labourer. Soon after his death, she

decided that she would not let anyone else face the kind of difficulties she had to face due to lack

of healthcare. She had to bring up her five children and keep her own body and soul together.

Over the next twenty years she toiled as a housemaid, manual labourer and vegetable seller and

saved 20000 rupees. Meanwhile she educated her son Ajoy Mistry and got him to be a Doctor

with help from philanthropists. She got the residents of Hanspukur to pool in more money and

established a trust called “humanity trust” and bought about half an acre of land and established

in 1993 Humanity Hospital in a small hut. Ms. Mistry recalled that for 20 years, she scrimped

and saved. She spent nothing on herself and little on her children, except for son Ajoy’s

education. With the industriousness of an ant, she saved, little by little for a purpose. She had not

given up on her dream. She was determined to build that hospital. Finally she concluded “This

hospital means everything to me. It is my wealth, my knowledge, my happiness.”

To conclude was Jimmy Tangree who made everyone feel happy & enthusiastic with his

inspiring stories. With a typical story telling style Mr. Tangree shared with us about his

experience with Radio & FM. He spoke about radio being the medium to communicate and

spread awareness, and how people get help generously once appealed to.

He started his career in February 1994, he was approached to be a part of a private radio station

and on July 26, 1994, with no background or knowledge of radio, he did his first LIVE broadcast

from the studios of AIR.

He shared with us about his amazing experience which was unforgettable for him. His first two

words, “Good Morning”, overloaded the mixer and the transmitter tripped and he went off air for

a minute. That’s how he started his radio career. Direct Dilse is the show he conducts on 91.9

Friends FM. He is presently the head of 91.9 Friends FM.

Soon after the inaugural ceremony the most outstanding element of the entire fest were the

‘photography’ and artwork with which the entire campus was decorated in varied themes

displaying over 160 photographs from different corners of the city stimulating creativity as well

as excellence simultaneously. The ‘photography exhibition’ was inaugurated by Jimmy Tangree

followed by 91.9 Friends FM & Facebook Live coverage; the exhibition was a huge success in

itself. It was in fact highly impressive to see the talents showcased by the Management students.

The first students’ event, among 20 events, for Day 1 (March 17, 2018) was B-Quizzone: The

Business Quiz followed by Games, Business Plan & Ad-Venting (Ad Making) competitions.

Each event came out to be successful and full of participants.

The evening of Day 1 was however something called ‘nostalgia’, ‘recollection’ & ‘reminisce’. It

was the Alumni Meet (Down Memory Lane) for all former Management students. Laughter &

Tears went hand in hand as all past students met their favourite faculty members and dear

juniors. Alumni Meet was a grand success in itself with lots of fun & frolic and most importantly

DJ Music.

Day 2 (March 18, 2018) of SRJAN started with Trade-Bate: The Business Debate 2 members

per team (6 teams) took part. The competition was a tough one. Winner & First Runner up Prizes

were given to 2 best teams; 2 best speakers were also given prizes & certificate.

Trade-Bate was followed by MUN (Model United Nations) competition where 10 teams

representatives of 10 different countries (Brazil, Croatia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Pakistan,

South Africa, Saudi Arabia, UAE, USA) participated to speak on ‘Human Rights Violation’ in

front of Secretary General, Chairperson & Assistant Chairperson.

The most awaited event of Day 2 was yet to take place. The Bioscope: Short Film Competition

organized by the MBA students. Numerous colleges participated with their Short films to receive

appreciation from famous theatre personality Mr. Rudraprasad SenGupta.

Mr. Rudraprasad SenGupta was the Guest of Honour & Judge for the Bioscope

Competition. He spoke about how he gained the position in the theatre world. He received

several awards, including the highest National award from Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1980. He

along with theatre also appeared in certain Bengali art films like Autograph (2010), Padi Pishir

Barmi Baksha (1972), Hatey Bazarey (1967), Galpa Holeo Satyi (1966) & Hollywood ventures

like Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha (1993), and Roland Joffé's City of Joy (1992).

3 Short films, Obaktyo, Gallus Gallus, Aayna won the respective 1st, 2

nd & 3

rd Prizes.

The day ended with breathtaking ‘cultural ‘performances by MBA students both in-house &

out-house and all participants including other colleges like St. Xavier’s College, Heritage

Institute of Technology, ILEAD among others thoroughly enjoyed the event.

The final day, Day 3 (March 19, 2018) of SRJAN started with Elevator Speech, where a student

is supposed to sell himself/herself within 7 minutes to a high profile corporate personality stuck

as if in an elevator/lift. Highly amusing & interactive session took place.

MUN came to an end on Day 3 with 2 teams as winners; instead of Winner or 1st Runner up;

MUN gave prizes to 2 teams as ‘high commendation’.

It was a significant representation of the hard work, harmony, order and frugality of the people,

and of the sweet results of their toil, union and intelligent cooperation that competitions like

Poster/ Logo Competition & WEF (World Economic Forum) and last but not the least CSR

(Corporate social Responsibility) activity in association with Human Society International

came out to be very victorious & successful.

Parallel with SRJAN 2K18 another event, organized by students, which is worth mentioning,

was the Food Fest. Nearly 10 stalls with various eatery counters were opened up not only to

satisfy one’s tongue & stomach but also to hone certain marketing & managerial skills as

well.

1 Startup Company owned by two 1st year MBA students, RUPMI, mainly specialist in

Gemstone & Jewellery design, also presented their creativity and earned lot of appreciation

during the 3 days of the Management Fest.

Institute of Engineering & Management, Management House campus had witnessed the highest

number of footfalls this year in SRJAN 2K18 and has made a benchmark regarding its college

fests. The feedback of the participants was very positive and encouraging.

SRJAN 2K18 was a super success this year. Working together during this period, individuals

contributed specialized talents and skills for building a well-planned community in a hostile

environment. Community and individuality, created the persistent symbol of integrity. We do

hope to continue scaling new heights in the years to come.
