Overview
A magical place is worthy of a magical name. And so it is in ancient Serendip,
where the stuff of happy accidents and unimaginable discoveries have inspired
fables and folklore. Today’s Sri Lanka remains a seductive land of serendipity,
and a fitting locale for our very special 10th Anniversary VIP Guided Walking
Adventure. In a beguiling destination few Westerners have experienced, you
walk among some of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth, from sylvan
forests dotted with terraced fields and lotus ponds to misty undulating hills
carpeted with hand-harvested tea bushes. Marvel at Buddhist and Hindu
monuments carved into cave-strewn hillsides and a hulking monolithic fort
rising from dry plains. Stroll among the haunting ruins of some of history’s most
vibrant and thriving ancient societies. And follow cobbled lanes into a rich past
where spice was king, luring European traders whose legacies live on in grand
colonial cities. You explore the most mesmerizing corners of Old Ceylon—
Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Ceylon Tea Country, and Galle—in exclusive
VIP fashion, by private helicopter, historic train, float plane, and of course by
history’s well-worn paths still traversed by saffron-robed monks and patient tea
pickers. And indulge in Sri Lanka’s most luxurious accommodations and cuisine
every step of the way. We invite you to experience Sri Lanka’s
unimaginable delights as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary!

Daily Itinerary
OPTIONAL FLIGHT + TOUR COMBO: FLIGHT
Fly from USA to Colombo, Sri Lanka
You will be sent flight details from the U.S. ahead of time via email.
OPTIONAL FLIGHT + TOUR COMBO: ARRIVAL
Arrive in Colombo, Sri Lanka
After arriving at Colombo’s International Airport, a representative holding a
Country Walkers sign will meet you as you exit the baggage-claim area. A
complimentary transfer will be provided to the Galle Face Hotel, approximately
one- hour away.
DAY 1
VIP Gala Welcome Dinner
Ayubowan – Welcome to Sri Lanka! You arrive in Negombo today and drive an
hour to your iconic and elegant hotel in Colombo, one of the oldest hotels east
of the Suez. Colombo, Sri Lanka’s bustling capital, translates in the local tongue
to “harbor with leafy mango trees.” The Portuguese, Dutch, and English all held
sway in Sri Lanka, each for about 150 years from the time the former arrived as
the first European settlers in 1505. Colombo grew into a key stop on the famous
spice trade routes and transformed into an eclectic city of many cultures and
800.464.9255 5 countrywalkers.com
faiths. Buddhist and Hindu temples rub
elbows with Christian churches and
Muslim mosques here, testament to a
nation that has embraced decades of
change and endured its share of turmoil.
After settling in, relax by the swimming
pool or in one of the many inviting lounge
areas overlooking the ocean. Should you
wish to stretch your legs, the Galle Face
Green (a popular public park) is adjacent to the hotel and walking its short
promenade along the Indian Ocean gives you a great introduction to the local
peoples who make this city their home.
This evening at the hotel, gather for a private welcome dinner of delicious Sri
Lankan specialties. In the company of fellow travelers and your Country Walkers
host, you toast the week ahead.
Galle Face Hotel, Colombo
Set beautifully on the Indian Ocean, the Galle Face Hotel exudes an air of 19th-
century luxury. With timeless elegance, it overlooks the city’s celebrated Galle
Face Green, a mile-long promenade fronting the ocean. The Travelers’ Bar
overlooks the ocean from an open-air porch with colonial stylings. The beachside
Checkerboard terrace is the ideal spot to savor a cup of Ceylon tea.
DAY 2
Private flight to Anuradhapura in the Cultural Triangle. Exploration of the ancient
city of Anuradhapura; 2.5 miles, easy
Enjoy a bountiful breakfast on the gracious front porch of your hotel, perhaps
sampling thosai, flat pancakes of rice and lentil flour, local fruits, and made-to-
order omelets. Then head inland in the most thrilling and privileged fashion as
you and your VIP group board a private helicopter. During your 45-minute
flight, you soar over lush terrain of sloping hills and valleys, marveling from the
air at some of the monumental sites you visit shortly. Your destination is Sri
Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, where the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura, Kandy,
and Polonnaruwa meet.
After lunch in an old chieftain’s mansion, the main house of your resort
accommodations, you drive to Anuradhapura, a former walled city that served as
Sri Lanka’s first capital. This UNESCO World Heritage site, thought to have
emerged out of a cutting from the Buddha’s “tree of enlightenment,” was home
800.464.9255 6 countrywalkers.com
to one of the most sophisticated societies in the world and stands today as one
of the oldest continuously inhabited cities. Explore this massive site on foot,
unearthed in the 19th century after the jungle had swallowed it about 800 years
before. Laid out on a flat forested plain, it hosts some of the holiest places of
Theravada Buddhism, including ancient temples, palaces, monasteries, and
enormous dagobas, or bell-shaped stupas built to store sacred relics. The largest—
the Jetavanaramaya Dagoba—stands over 300 feet tall and is the world’s second
largest structure made by ancient hands after Egypt’s pyramids. An expert
anthropologist joins your walks today and tomorrow to elucidate this endlessly
impressive sacred center of political and religious power and to help you
envision its former splendor.
Dine al fresco this evening at your hotel. Sri Lankan cuisine takes many cues
from the Indian kitchen, as you might discover for yourself over chicken or dhal
curry served with a freshly prepared chutney or sambol (or relish) of lime,
coconut, chile powder, and ground Maldive fish. A refreshing sorbet made from
local fruits might top off your meal.
Ulagalla Resort, Thirapanne
Set in a lush oasis of 58 acres, the Ulagalla Resort comprises a 150-year-old
chieftain’s mansion and 20 private eco-villas. One of the Small Luxury Hotels of
the World, it boasts impeccable service and an indulgent, oversized swimming
pool. Your villa is 850 square feet of extravagance. Its glass walls provide
constant views of the property’s natural beauty, a paradise of bird and animal
life. A personal deck and private plunge pool make your villa a destination unto
itself.

DAY 3
Sigiriya Rock Fortress; 1 mile, easy or 2
miles, moderate to challenging (with 1,200
steps). Pidurangala Rock; 3 miles,
moderate with challenging sections or
Jungle Stroll; 3 miles, easy. Free time or
optional visit to the Ritigala Jungle
Monastery; 1.5 miles, moderate
Today’s full day of adventure begins before
dawn. You set off early to visit one of Sri
Lanka’s most famous sites—the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, rising like a monolith
from the flat, dry plains. Also known as the “Lion Rock” for the shape of its
massive gateway, it was built for King Kashyapa as a defense from his enemies.
Perched atop a colossal rock 656 feet above the countryside, this UNESCO
World Heritage site is a marvel to explore. You have your choice of walks here,
as well. At the rock’s base, wander the pathways through a rainforest and the
Royal Gardens, a picturesque blend of water, boulder, and terraced landscapes.
If you’re up for the challenge—and, unafraid of heights—climb the 1,200 steps
to the fortress: navigate the steps, platforms, and circular stairs that cling to the
rock face, passing impressive frescoes of seductive maidens and the smoothly
glazed Mirror Wall. At the “lion’s mouth,” a final set of stairs delivers you to
palace remains spread over a wide plateau. Here, above the world, sip hot tea or
coffee provided by our guides and a light breakfast with views worthy of a king.
Later, leave the crowds behind and explore one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned
sites, surprisingly undiscovered by most travelers. Just minutes from Sigiriya,
hike with your guide to the top of Pidurangala, a massive rock formation
emerging from the dense jungle. You follow a forest trail and series of rock steps
to an astonishing sight: a reclining Buddha carved into the mountainside. Linger
here to contemplate its magnificence. If you wish, and if you are not deterred by
heights, continue 15 minutes further upward to the summit where you are
rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding forest and a unique
perspective of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. If you prefer a more leisurely walk, after
visiting the small monastery at the base of the mountain, you follow a quiet dirt
road, passing tranquil farms and a small elementary school. At the outlying
ramparts of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a stroll along the fort’s manmade moats
makes for a pleasant idyll.
800.464.9255 8 countrywalkers.com
Late this afternoon, choose between free
time at your hotel or a visit to Ritigala, the
rarely visited Jungle Monastery on the
slopes of Ritigala Mountain. The caves you
pass were once home to monks sworn to a
life of austerity. Follow their spiritual path
high into the dense forest that still
envelops much of this archaeological site,
exploring the series of stairways and trails
that link the Monastery’s main sites.
This evening, enjoy a barbecue dinner Sri Lanka style, as you dine under the stars
at the hotel’s private kamatha, or threshing ground where grains were once
processed.
Ulagalla Resort, Thirapanne
DAY 4
Dambulla Cave Temples; 1 mile, moderate. Transfer to Kandy (4 hours).
Udawattakele Royal Forest; 3 miles, easy
Depart early this morning for Kandy, Sri Lanka’s second largest city. En route,
stop to stretch your legs and explore the Dambulla Cave Temples. You ascend a
pathway 350 feet, then peer into these exquisitely painted chambers, a UNESCO
World Heritage site. Dating to the 1st century BC, these temples were the gift of
an exiled king who sought refuge here with the monks. In gratitude for their
kindness, he later transformed their austere homes into glorious sanctuaries.
Explore the five caves adorned with vibrant Buddhist and Hindu imagery. Pause
for lunch amidst the mountains of Sri Lanka’s breathtaking spice country, where
cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and pepper are harvested. Upon arrival in Kandy,
the former capital of the island nation, visit the Udawattekele Forest for a
pleasant 3-mile walk. This lush pocket of Kandy has variously been a pleasure
garden and a wartime retreat for the royal family. Today it is a verdant refuge
where more than 80 species of birds and 32 types of butterflies take wing. A
series of easy loop trails traverse this important bio-reserve. Select the one that
suits you, watching for birds and mammals like the barking deer and toque
monkey.
Late this afternoon, you arrive at your 5-star hotel, nestled in the hills above
Kandy. After time to settle in—perhaps enjoying the swimming pool and
roaming the beautifully manicured grounds—gather in the Far Pavilion
Restaurant for a multi-course meal.
800.464.9255 9 countrywalkers.com
Earl’s Regency Hotel, Kandy
Tucked away in the hills above the city of
Kandy, the Earl’s Regency Hotel provides a
relaxed tropical setting. Its beautifully
manicured swimming pool was shaped to
fit the natural rock contours that surround
it. Your spacious deluxe room features a
private balcony that overlooks lush green
environs and a unique local character. If
you wish, indulge yourself in a treatment at
Ayu Spa, perhaps a soothing massage,
facial, or body scrub.
DAY 5
Village Walking Exploration; 3-4 miles, easy. Temple of the Tooth
Enjoy a leisurely day of strolling among the small villages surrounding Kandy
and visiting the city’s revered Temple of the Tooth. After breakfast, embark on a
walking tour of the charming and welcoming hamlets that dot the countryside
and the city’s outskirts. As you explore, you visit numerous cottage industries
where artisans keep long-held traditions alive. Begin at a quaint Buddhist temple
and admire its serene Sleeping Buddha. Meet the caretaker here and learn what it
means to be the “Keeper of the Temple.” Later, observe as a couple creates
wooden spoons from coconuts and watch a woodcarver create handsome pieces
from the timber of local trees. You might also pause to sample some of Sri
Lanka’s delicious specialties, tasting authentic roti, unleavened wheat flatbread,
and string hoppers, light rice flour pancakes served with coconut curry. Along
the way relax over a picnic lunch.
Continue to Kandy, where the Temple of the Tooth stands as one of
Buddhism’s most important sites. Thousands of white-clad pilgrims from all
over the world come here to meditate and give puja, or sacred offerings, over
what is believed to be a tooth that belonged to Buddha, smuggled into the
country in 310 AD. For dinner, drive a short distance to a favorite restaurant for
a lively meal.

DAY 6
Train ride from Kandy to Hatton. Ceylon
Tea Country: 3-5 miles, easy to moderate
Early risers may wish to watch the sun
come up over mist-covered hills from the
hotel terrace. After breakfast, embark on a
thrilling train journey, ascending from
Kandy into the lush tea country in the
central highlands. Sri Lanka’s trains have
not changed much since colonial days, making this one of the most authentic
and nostalgic cultural experiences of your adventure. You slowly traverse dense
forests as scenic hillsides unfold around you until, by journey’s end, the high
mountains are shrouded in tea. This is Ceylon Tea Country, a breathtaking
UNESCO World Heritage site of terraced fields, soaring peaks, deep-cut ravines,
and cascading waterfalls. You have two days to immerse yourself in this magical
place, with ample opportunities for invigorating walks amidst splendid scenery.
After lunch, you join a “tea trails” guide for a walk among the tea fields. Follow
pathways used by the tea pickers, looping through lush groves of Sri Lanka’s
purest tea plants and admiring magnificent unspoiled mountain vistas rising up
around you. You occasionally pause to witness some pickers as they pluck leaves
by hand, critical to ensuring clean teas untouched by machinery, and toss them
in their heaving baskets. Your rewarding walk ends with a daily tradition at your
luxury lodging: late-afternoon high tea, complete with sandwiches, scones, cakes,
and homemade jams.
This evening, savor a four-course meal at your luxury hotel, an indulgent
experience that is locally sourced and incredibly fresh. Savor salad made with
ingredients picked fresh from the garden, delicious asparagus or pumpkin soup,
grilled fish or chicken served tandoori style with roasted organic vegetables and
perhaps some green-tea infused ice cream for dessert.
Ceylon Tea Trails, Dickoya
The world’s first tea bungalow resort, and Sri Lanka’s first Relais & Chateaux
resort, Ceylon Tea Trails is a collection of five thoughtfully restored, luxurious
planters’ bungalows spread over tea-growing hillsides. Situated at 4,000 feet,
these gracious lodgings border the Central Highlands UNESCO World Heritage
site. Period teak furnishings, antique touches, butler service, and breathtaking
panoramas of mountains and tea fields create an exclusive ambiance.
800.464.9255 11 countrywalkers.com
You enjoy a “private house” experience
with a butler and team to meet your every
need, each bungalow boasting beautiful
views of the surrounding tea country,
manicured gardens, elegant sitting areas
with fireplaces, and spacious rooms.
During your stay, immerse yourself in local
tea culture as you walk the tea trails that
connect the bungalows. All dinners will be
enjoyed together at one of the bungalows.
DAY 7
Ceylon Tea Country: 7.5 miles, moderate or 9.8 miles, moderate to challenging.
“Tea Experience” tour
Awake to a hot pot of tea or coffee in bed. If you prefer, you may instead join
the resident naturalist for an early morning bird-watching walk, perhaps spotting
parrots, sunbirds, Ceylon jungle fowl, or streak-throated woodpeckers. After,
savor a breakfast overlooking the gardens: fresh fruit grown on surrounding
farms, freshly squeezed juice, bread and jam, and eggs, or meats cooked to order.
Begin the day with a full morning trek along quiet roads and rustic trails through
eucalyptus forests and tea plantations, admiring stunning views of the
Bogawantalawa Valley and Castlereagh Lake below. Bogawantalawa is renowned
as the “Golden Valley” or its lush tea bushes that produce a variety of teas on
these western slopes. Its high-elevation plants yield the crème de la crème of Ceylon
teas. Pause along the way to visit a Hindu temple or a Tamil school. Today’s
longer option starts at Tientsen Bungalow, a 30-minute drive away and the
highest and most remote of the bungalows. From here, you descend a long trail
through tea fields and rustic villages, following roads that connect the various
plantations, until you reach Norwood Bungalow.
After lunch, meet the resident planter to learn about tea-making from start to
finish. Accompany this tea specialist to the fields to observe the picking of “two
leaves and a bud,” then continue to the factory where leaves are processed. You
have the chance to sample different grades of tea during your visit. (Depending
on local scheduling, the order of today’s activities may be reversed.) This
evening, enjoy pre-dinner drinks and another delicious multi-course dinner.
Ceylon Tea Trails, Dickoya

DAY 8
Float Plane to Galle. City tour; 1.5 miles, easy. Free time. VIP Gala Farewell
Dinner
Savor a final breakfast in Ceylon Tea Country. Then transfer to Castlereagh Lake
for an exciting hour-long flight by sea plane to the peninsular city of Galle,
South Asia’s best preserved fortress town. This spectacular UNESCO World
Heritage site was built by the Portuguese in the 1500s, further fortified by the
Dutch as headquarters for the Dutch East India Company, and preserved by the
British. Upon arrival, head to a local eatery for lunch like the locals: aboard an
authentic tuk-tuk.
Later, check into our lodging for the night, centrally located in the heart of Galle
for easy exploration on your own. Step outside your door and you find
numerous shops selling teas, intricate wood carvings, gems, and local
handicrafts. Browse for some last minute gifts, or relax at your hotel enjoying
tea on the gracious front porch, taking a dip in the swimming pool, or perhaps
reserving one of the hotel’s Roman baths.
After the heat of the day, join a local guide for an enlightening walking tour past
Dutch-style houses with tiled roofs, stopping to admire the Groote Kerk, or
Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1755; the gleaming white Galle Lighthouse, Sri
Lanka’s oldest; and some infamous off-the-beaten-path sites. This evening you
gather with your fellow travelers for a festive and elegant farewell dinner.
Amangalla Resort, Galle
The elegant and historic Amangalla Resort is located in the heart of Galle.
Restored to its former colonial grandeur, this five-star hotel is an oasis of
tranquility and features lovely gardens, a swimming pool, a rooftop veranda, and
views of the fort. Its Roman baths offer a sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room, and cold
and hot plunge pools and may be reserved for private use. Each room provides
all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

DAY 9
Optional stroll along the Galle Fort walls; 2
miles, easy. Transfer to Negombo
If you wish, rise early to join a pre-
breakfast walk to the local fish stalls where
fishermen haul in the morning’s catch.
Then head up onto the fortress ramparts
to stroll some of the perimeter of historic
Galle. As the city awakens, you might see
locals swimming in the Indian Ocean, practicing tai chi, or jogging along the
wall. Later, linger over breakfast by the pool or on the hotel’s historic front
porch as the city passes by. You make the 3-hour drive to Negombo late this
morning, and bid farewell to your guides and fellow travel companions.
If you have selected our Flight + Tour Combo, check in to a day room or stay
overnight, depending on your flight schedule. You transfer to the airport based
on your departure time.
OPTIONAL FLIGHT + TOUR COMBO: DAY 9 / POST-TOUR NIGHT
Optional stroll along the Galle Fort walls; 2 miles, easy. Post-tour night in
Negombo
For those booking the Flight + Tour Combo, a post-tour night (or day room
depending on the time of your departure flight) is reserved at the lovely
Wallawwa Boutique hotel, just 15 minutes from the Colombo International
Airport.
Wallawwa Hotel, Negombo

is a serene, five-acre oasis in the lush jungle amidst mature gardens. Colonial
charms and exceptional service create a relaxed and carefree atmosphere among
former Dutch warehouse buildings with wide-pillared verandas. Public areas

Upon arrival at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, you transfer to
your hotel to rest after your journey. Relax around the landscaped pool or
indulge in a spa treatment. (No other services or meals included).
Wallawwa Hotel, Negombo
Though the deluxe boutique Wallawwa Hotel is just minutes from the airport, it is
a serene, five-acre oasis in the lush jungle amidst mature gardens. Colonial
charms and exceptional service create a relaxed and carefree atmosphere
among former Dutch warehouse buildings with wide-pillared verandas. Public
areas include inviting courtyards and a landscaped pool. If you wish, indulge in a
treatment at Z Spa, stretch in the yoga garden, and savor Asian fusion cuisine.
DAY 2
Flight to Southern Coast and transfer to Yala National Park. Afternoon game
drive
Fly to Sri Lanka’s southern coast and transfer to Yala National Park. You will
have time to settle in to your 5-star lodge this morning, perhaps taking a dip in
your own private plunge pool. After lunch, you set out on an afternoon safari
into Sri Lanka’s largest national park. Originally hunting grounds and a
playground for the British elite during colonial days, today Yala is home to a
large diversity of wildlife. Your experienced guide will help you watch for Asian
elephants and leopards.
This evening join fellow travelers at the al fresco bar for a pre-dinner drink
before dinner on the deck.
Chena Huts, Yala National Park
The 5-star Chena Huts are named for the small clearings in the jungle carved by
Sri Lankan farmers to grow crops. Nestled among the dunes and trees at the
edge of the Indian Ocean and hugging the shores of a saline lake, these luxury
eco-lodges provide ample bird-watching opportunities. Your private hut is a
thatched-roof pavilion surrounded by lush wilderness and sweeping seascapes,
with its own rain shower and private plunge pool.
Please Note:Please Note:Please Note:Please Note: While the Chena Huts are located directly on the Indian Ocean,
the beach can only be visited in company of a ranger guide due to its proximity
to the park and wildlife; swimming is not allowed.

DAY 3
Yala National Park: Morning and afternoon
game drives
You head out on safari early this morning,
the best time to spot active wildlife. You
might see leopards lounging in trees or
atop the park’s dramatic rock formations
as they catch the morning sun after a night
of hunting. Or stop by a lagoon or
wetlands to try to catch sight of mugger or saltwater crocodiles. You return to
the lodge for breakfast and some relaxation. Take a dip or nap by the swimming
pool or stroll the wild coast accompanied by a ranger guide perhaps seeing ibises,
painted storks, or flamingoes. Late this afternoon after lunch, enjoy another
safari amidst the diverse landscapes of Yala.

OTHER DETAILS
Special Meal Requests
While Country Walkers will forward any requests for special meals (vegetarian,
salt-free, low-calorie, kosher, etc.), to the airline, we do suggest contacting the
airline directly to reconfirm your request after you receive your airline tickets.
Frequent Flyer Miles
Country Walkers cannot book tickets using frequent flyer miles. While we are
happy to forward your frequent flyer number to the airlines, due to our
contracts, we cannot guarantee that any frequent flyer miles will be earned on
flights purchased, and the granting of any frequent flyer credits is the decision of
the airline, not Country Walkers. The best method of obtaining any credit that
the airline may choose to grant is to present your frequent flyer membership
card upon check-in. We strongly recommend keeping copies of your boarding
passes and your passenger receipt (from your airline ticket package) as proof of
flight, in the event that the airline does not properly credit your frequent flyer
account. You can submit the boarding passes and passenger receipt directly to
the airline for any applicable mileage credit.
Advanced Seat Reservations
While Country Walkers will forward seating requests to the airlines based on
your preferences, airlines do not always assign seats in advance. If the airline is
able to pre-assign seats, your assignment will be indicated on your final air
itinerary. If the airline does not assign your seat in advance, you can check in
early at the airport or contact the airline directly to request your seating
preference. Unfortunately Country Walkers cannot guarantee advanced, pre-
assigned seating.
Please Note: Some major airlines charge for pre-assigned seating.
Domestic Connections
If you choose to make your own domestic flight reservations, we recommend
that you avoid purchasing tickets at fares that carry high penalty charges for
changes. International schedules are subject to change, and Country Walkers
cannot be responsible for domestic airfare penalties or any loss resulting from
unexpected changes in your international flights, cancellations, or changes in
travel dates. Most airlines will charge a fee of approximately $300 per person to
change your reservation. In many cases, tickets are nonrefundable. Make certain
you are aware of all change and cancellation fees.
800.464.9255 29 countrywalkers.com
CHANGING FLIGHTS
While the Flight + Tour Combo is booked immediately, the air is generally not
ticketed until 45 days prior to travel. With a $100 administrative per-person,
nonrefundable fee, you can request a change to your flight based on availability
outside of 45 days prior to departure; additional air charges may apply. Some
exceptions apply.
Flights have been contracted with partner airlines to provide the lowest possible
airfare, however, these fares can be quite restrictive and carry cancellation
charges imposed by the airline ranging from 25% to 100% (once ticketed). Any
costs resulting from flight changes after your trip is confirmed will be your
responsibility. We regret that we cannot accept changes to air reservations less
than 45 days prior to departure. Some exceptions apply.
FLIGHT + TOUR COMBO CANCELLATIONS
The VIP Country Walkers cancellation policies apply to the Flight + Tour
Combos. Should you cancel just the Air Package portion of your tour, the
relevant penalty will be charged to the portion being removed from your
reservation.
IMPORTANT: In the event that you are delayed during scheduled air travel,
Country Walkers cannot reimburse you for any unused portion of the land
portion of your trip. If you have purchased the travel protection plan, you are
insured for covered travel delays, as described in the Travel Insurance
Certificate. There is a 100% penalty for aborted travel plans; reimbursement is
not applicable through Country Walkers and is generally not covered by the
Travel Protection Plan.

Sri Lanka at a Glance
VISITING SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka is a developing country. Infrastructure, including modern roads, is
fairly good, but poverty is apparent. The Country Walkers tour has been
designed to maximize exposure to the diversity, land, people, and culture of Sri
Lanka, both on foot and during the travel days. The most important tools that a
traveler can bring are a sense of humor, flexibility, and an open mind to cultural
differences. While the itinerary in Sri Lanka has been created in collaboration
with our local expert guides, each experience is unique and requires patience on
the part of the traveler.

least three months beyond the dates of travel as the actual Visa

ELECTRICITY
Alternating current of 230V and 50Hz is used in Sri
Lanka. Plugs have three large round pins in a triangular
configuration. For a full listing of electrical outlets
worldwide, see electricaloutlet.org.
WEATHER
Warmed by Indian Ocean winds, Sri Lanka enjoys tropical warm days and cool
nights year-round. But its ecological zones vary from equatorial rainforest to
drier savannas. The north, where the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Anuradhapura
are located, east, and southeast, are considered dry zones despite that they
receive 50-75 inches of rain per year. In the central, tea-growing highlands,

temperatures are cooler, often in the 60s, and
frost may occur in the winter months. Night-

the highlands.

HEALTH CONCERNS
No immunizations are required to enter Sri
Lanka. Always consult a travel clinic at a local
university, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, and/or your
personal physician for the most up-to-date recommendations and routine
vaccinations. Hepatitis, tetanus, typhoid, polio, measles, mumps, and rubella
vaccinations are generally recommended for all travelers. Be sure to let your
physician know what parts of Sri Lanka you plan to visit, as recommendations
may vary depending on the regions you are visiting.
FOOD & DRINK
Sri Lankan cuisine has been called “Indian food for beginners.”
For breakfast, you will often find string hoppers. These paper-
thin rice noodles are served with several condiments to bring
bright flavors to your morning. Thosai, or flat pancakes of rice
and lentil flour, are also common. Curry dishes at lunch and dinner time tend to
be lighter and milder their Indian counterparts, yet they bring out the vivid
flavors of their ingredients. Each meal typically has up to a dozen curries; tasting
them all can be sheer delight, a parade of lively flavors balanced by red or white
rice. A standout at many meals is the brinjal, or eggplant, curry, caramelized from
a perfect braising. Another delicious snack or side is roti, a simple wheat-flour
flatbread. Often, the baker mixes ingredients into the dough, such as shredded
coconut (to create a thengappu roti) or onions and chillies (uraippu roti). Crab is also
quite popular in Sri Lanka, especially in seaside cities.
Steeped in leaves plucked from the island’s central highlands, tea doesn’t get
much fresher than it is in Sri Lanka. The country boasts several different zones
where the tea bush is cultivated and each leaf yields a different cup depending on
the elevation in which it was grown. Fruit juices, especially from passion fruit,
are also common. The ubiquitous coconut is used to make a distilled spirit
Travel Tip
Sri Lanka is one of the world’s leading
producers of tea. In the same way you
might enjoy the different bouquets and
flavors of wine, you will enhance your
appreciation of the country’s many
teas by making a point of tasting them.
From Ceylon black to Ceylon green
and even Ceylon white, each tea takes
on the characteristics of the soil and
climate in which it was cultivated.

known as arrack. And for a sweet treat, try faluda, a blend of syrup, ice cream,
jelly and basil seeds.

precautions for personal safety that apply in many countries and cities
worldwide; in addition to being aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables
close and hidden while in public (avoid dangling cameras or other “tourist bait”),
and avoid walking alone at night. Please follow accommodation and/or your

Packing List
PACKING TIPS
Pack light! Keep in mind there will be times you may have to carry your own
luggage short distances, especially before and after your Country Walkers tour.
Due to space constraints, we require you to limit your luggage to one medium
piece (approximately 18x15x29 inches or 8,000 cu. in.) and one small carry-on,
per person. We recommend packing any personal necessities, medications, your
hotel itinerary/emergency contact information, your hiking boots (or shoes), and
extra clothes in your carry-on luggage in the event that your baggage is delayed.
We suggest leaving valuable jewelry at home. A copy of your passport or other
important documents should be kept in a separate area of your luggage. Always
be alert when carrying a purse, camera, money belt, or backpack in busy cities,
airports, and train stations.
Please note: When transferring by helicopter and float plane, your luggage will
be transferred with the driver to the next destination therefore we recommend
packing a small carry-on bag (your backpack may suffice) for these flights.
FOOTWEAR
» Hiking boots or shoes. There are many brands to choose from. Proper fit is
crucial, so try on new boots or shoes while wearing socks you plan to use on
tour. Be sure to break in new footwear well before your tour begins. If you are
bringing a favorite pair of older boots, please check that soles and seams are in
good shape before you depart! By the time you’re ready to join your walking
tour, you should be able to complete 4-6 miles of walking without discomfort.
We require lightweight boots or shoes with proper ankle support and good
tread to ensure stability on all types of terrain. Waterproof footwear keeps feet
dry in heavy rain and water resistant footwear keeps feet dry in heavy dew.
Country Walkers reserves the right to deny participation to any guest not
wearing appropriate footwear.
» Comfortable shoes or sandals for temple visits (which can be easily slipped off
and on)
» Synthetic, moisture-wicking socks (cotton socks are not recommended for
