Lot 809 - 1033 7th Street NWYear of Construction: 1862

Owner: Mary C. Santer

Building Description: This two-story, one-bay wide brick building has been altered with the introduction of a steel and glass storefront at the first level. The building has housed a shoe repair shop, a basket manufacturer, a candy shop and a lunchroom.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999) and is also designated as part of the East Side of the 1000 Block of Seventh Street, NW (DC designation 11/21/1978, NR listing 2/2/1984).

Proposed Preservation Plan: The building will occupy its original location on 7th Street. The facade will be restored and the interior will be connected to the proposed new construction.

Lot 810 - 1035 7th Street NWYear of Construction: 1914

Building Description: This two-story brick building was originally designed for use as a store and apartments. It is one-bay wide at 7th Street and six-bays wide at L Street. The facade features a galvanized iron cornice with dentils.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999) and is also designated as part of the East Side of the 1000 Block of Seventh Street, NW (DC designation 11/21/1978, NR listing 2/2/1984).

Proposed Preservation Plan: The building will occupy its original location on 7th Street. The facade will be restored and the interior will be connected to the proposed new construction.

Lot 808 - 1027-1031 7th Street NWYear of Construction: 1938

Building Description: This yellow brick and concrete building was constructed for the Walker Thomas Furniture Store. The facade features black brick at the lintels and roof, and a first story storefront designed with black glass panels.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999) and is also designated as part of the East Side of the 1000 Block of Seventh Street, NW (DC designation 11/21/1978, NR listing 2/2/1984).

Proposed Preservation Plan: The building will occupy its original location on 7th Street. The facade will be restored and the interior will be connected to the proposed new construction.

Lot 806 - 1023 7th Street NWYear of Construction: 1872

Owner: Samuel J. Diggs

Building Description: This three-story brick building is laid in stretcher bond. Most of the original architectural ornamentation has been stripped from the facade. The building has been continuously used as a furniture store.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999) and is also designated as part of the East Side of the 1000 Block of Seventh Street, NW (DC designation 11/21/1978, NR listing 2/2/1984).

Lot 38 (15) - 1005-1007 7th Street NWYear of Construction: 1872

Owner: William H. Dunkhorst

Building Description: This corner building is ten-bays wide at New York Avenue and five-bays wide at 7th Street. The Italianate design has been retained. The New York Avenue first floor storefronts and doors are crowned by entablatures supported by brackets. The first floor design at 7th Street features a modest metal cornice. Both street elevations have arched windows at the second and third floors with cast iron hooded molding and a fleur-de-lis accent.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999) and is also designated as part of the East Side of the 1000 Block of Seventh Street, NW (DC designation 11/21/1978, NR listing 2/2/1984).

Proposed Preservation Plan: The building will occupy its original location on 7th Street. The facade will be restored and the interior will be renovated.

Lot 38 (16, 17) - 1009-1011 7th St NWYear of Construction: 1874

Owner: John Widmeyer

Building Description: The Italianate design of this three-story building has been retained. The first story features Corinthian pilasters supporting a paneled entablature. The windows have hood moldings and an acroteria design at the center. The bracketed cornice has bas-relief panels at the frieze.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999) and is also designated as part of the East Side of the 1000 Block of Seventh Street, NW (DC designation 11/21/1978, NR listing 2/2/1984).

Proposed Preservation Plan: The building will occupy its original location on 7th Street. The facade will be restored and the interior will be renovated.

Lot 37 (18, 19) - 1013-1015 7th St NWYear of Construction: 1871 (1013 7th St) 1888 (1015 7th St)Owner: Herman BurkhartArchitect: John G. MyersBuilder: John Shane

Building Description: The building was constucted during two building campaigns. The Italianate design has been retained and the overall integrity of the building is intact. The facade features modest stone lintels and sills, and a metal cornice with decorated brackets, modillions and a wide frieze.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999) and is also designated as part of the East Side of the 1000 Block of Seventh Street, NW (DC designation 11/21/1978, NR listing 2/2/1984).

Lot 804 - 639 New York Ave NWYear of Construction: 1889

Building Description: Originally constructed as a carriage warehouse, this brick building features ornamental brickwork including segmental arch brick lintels at the third floor and round arch brick lintels at the fourth floor. A corbelled brick frieze and metal cornice adorn the top of the building.

Preservation Status: The building is a contributing element to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District (DC designation 9/7/1999, NR listing 9/3/1999).

Proposed Preservation Plan: The building will be moved 34’-0” to the east. The New York Ave facade will be restored and the interior will be connected to the proposed new construction.

Lot 40 (22, 23) - 649 New York AveYear of Construction: 1874

Owner: George M. Baker

Building Description: This three-story building, originally constructed for the George M. Barker Lumber Company, was constructed in an Italianate design which has been retained to date. The first floor is divided into eight bays, while the upper floors are divided into six bays.
