Youth Protection (from front page)

in Exploring there was yet another training they would have to keep current (YO3.) The new YPT2 training replaces all of them in one course for all programs. The old courses are no longer available.

Unfortunately, the world is not as safe a place as we would all like to believe. Statistically, 1 in 4 girls report that they have experienced some type of abuse by the time they are 18. For boys, that num-ber is 1 in 6. YPT2 covers issues facing youth today like sexual and verbal abuse, hazing, bullying, and cyber abuses and how to recognize each and deal with them in the appropriate way.

All newly registered leaders will take the new course before being registered just like under the old training regimen. What’s new is that the National Council of the BSA is asking all leaders to take the new training no later than October 1, 2018 regardless of their current Youth Protection Training status. We realize that for those who have just recently taken the old training, this creates a

redundancy and apologize for the inconvenience. This decision was made with the universal protection of our youth in mind.

Another way we keep youth safe is by providing resources for parents and leaders to get guidance and to report anything that they feel is inappropriate. The Scouts-First helpline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The number is (1-844-SCOUTS1 or 1-844-726-8871) and email contact address ([email protected]) for these sensitive matters.

Please log into my.scouting to experience this dynamic presentation from leading experts in the field of Youth Protection Safety. Youth Protection is BSA's #1 priority.

On Monday, May 7th, the Council will hold its volunteer recognition dinner and annual meeting at Burgundy Basin. Registration and fellowship from 5:00-6:00pm followed by the formal dinner program which will run from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

You are invited to join the officers and Executive Board of Seneca Waterways Council for this celebration in which we recognize individuals for their outstanding achievements and commitment to Scouting.

At the recognition dinner we will recognize the 2018 Silver Beaver Honorees as well as Veteran Scouters, and present unit

service awards, the Cannon Award, and the Venturing Leadership Award. At the annual meeting, we will elect the officers of the board.

Early Bird Registration accepted until April 14, 2018. Tickets are $40 before April 14th, after that date, the price increases to $50 and will be $60 at the door. To join us in paying tribute to our honorees, please submit the reservation form on this page or contact Chris Crittenden at 585-241-8580 or email [email protected] Watch for details on the council website and in the weekly e-newsletter, "Currents."

SPRING RECRUITMENT PASSPORT FOR ADVENTURE!

What is Spring Recruitment? Spring Recruitment is the period of the recruiting year that takes place from March 1st to June 30th. During Spring Recruitment, packs across Seneca Waterways Council will hold recruiting events in hopes of establishing a foundation to support that pack through the Spring and Summer seasons. This foundation often comes in the form of both new youth and new leadership. Recruiting den leaders during the Spring Recruitment season will allow packs to have its leadership structure in place and trained prior to the Pack’s Summer schedule.

When is Spring Recruitment? The Spring Recruitment campaign starts in February with the distribution of commitment forms and ends on June 16th when new youth and adults are registered in Scouting.

Timeline of the Season: March: Unit Leaders and District Membership Coordinators meet to develop Spring Recruitment Plans using the Membership Recruitment Menu. April: Units will begin holding their first chance events. From these events, units can establish new den leaders for necessary ranks. Applications from youth and adults are to be turned in within 48 hours of a joining event. This allows events that are held on Saturday to make it to the council service center. Please encourage your leadership to follow up and collect the applications and money in a timely manner.

May: Units will hold second and third chance joining events. All new youth are invited to attend a free day at Camp Cutler (with a paid adult accompanying them). Unit receive a voucher when the application and money are submitted to the council office. The voucher will give them directions on how to go to senecawaterways.org and sign up for the Spring Cubs in Camp session. They MUST preregister online to ensure their slot.

June: All applications for youth must be turned in by June 16th in order for them to be eligible for the Spring Recruiting incentives. There will be no exceptions.

How much does it cost to register a youth during the Spring Recruitment Campaign? The cost to register a youth during the Spring Recruitment Campaign is only $40. The $40 fee includes the registration and insurance fee, the handbook for the youth’s program area, a $20 Twilight Camp Voucher, a ticket to attend Cubs in Camp, and endless fun and memories.

How does my unit sign-up for Spring Recruitment? For your unit to take part in the Spring Recruitment a unit leader must fill out a commitment form and return it to Seneca Waterways Council: 2320 Brighton Henrietta TL Road, Rochester, NY 14623.

FRIENDS OF SCOUTING APPEALSupport Scouting through the FOS CampaignThe Seneca Waterways Council invests $192 per Scout in programs and services each year, all focused on our mission of expanding high-quality Scouting programs to young people in our communities. Support one Scout or more by signing up for monthly recurring giving and receive a commemorative Summit Circle pocket patch in addition to your Friends of Scouting shoulder patch. Recurring giving is convenient and provides a steady stream of support that leads to better budgeting and stronger Scouting programs.

You can give at your unit’s FOS presentation, by calling 585-241-8527, or submitting online at https://www.senecawaterways.org/supportscouting.

Summit Circle“Give a little each month to make a big difference.”

The Seneca Waterways Council is pleased to offer the “Summit Circle” as a means of allowing our supporters to make a big difference with minimal impact on your wallet. Summit Circle offers you the opportunity to make a small monthly pledge, charged to your credit card, which will make a tremendous difference in the life of a young person.

What is “Summit Circle” Recurring Giving?• It’s monthly giving

through a credit or debit card with no set end date.

• It’s an easy entry point for donors ($16/month vs. asking for $192/year).

• Donors can cancel, change or upgrade at any time.

• Reliable budgeting and steady stream of support for the Council.

• Pledges are entered monthly and billing is done automatically.

Contact the Seneca Waterways Council Finance Department at 585-241-8527 to join other families in the Summit Circle today!

Platinum UnitsThank you for making Friends of Scouting a priority in your unit. We are pleased to continue our unit-level incentive program for the 2018 Friends of Scouting campaign. The program is designed to recognize and thank units who contribute significantly to Scouting operations through their Family Friends of Scouting Campaign.

To become a Platinum Unit, your units must secure a number of pledges at least equal to 50 percent of registered Scout families and an average gift of $96 for the minimum threshold of donors on or before May 31, 2018. Platinum Units earn free cloth rank advancement and free tent camping at any Council property through one calendar year after the date earned. Unit membership is based on June 30, 2017 report.

The advancement incentive can be redeemed at the Scout Shop when submitted on a completed internet advancement report. They will verify your unit’s eligibility, and process it as a separate transaction. Tent camping reservations must be made for dates between September and June. You can reservations by contacting the Program Department at the Seneca Waterways Council.

Contact your Unit Friends of Scouting Coordinator, District Friends of Scouting Chair, or District Executive for your Platinum Unit levels and other information.

History of the 2018 FOS Council Shoulder Patch

The 2018 Friends of Scouting Council Shoulder Patch features an iconic etching from Yolanda Schofield titled The Dining Hall at Camp Babcock-Hovey, yesterday’s Memory-Tomorrow’s tradition. From 1976 until 2008, Yolanda commissioned a series of 12 pen and ink drawings of Camp Babcock-Hovey, plus a rendering of the “New” Scout Office in Geneva when it opened in 1987. Yolanda had a unique connection to Scouting – her husband Arnold served as the Scout Executive of Finger Lakes Council from 1973-1981. The image represents a piece of Seneca Waterways Council’s rich past.

MATCHING GIFTS Your Employer May Increase Your Support of ScoutingMany employers will match an employee’s charitable donation to a qualified not-for-profit organization. To find out if your employer has a matching gift program, please talk to your Human Resources Department. If the answer is yes, request a matching gift form, complete the form, sign it, and return the form with your payment. Seneca Waterways Council will then process the matching gift for you. Please note that some companies also match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. A partial listing of companies that do make matching gifts to qualified not-for-profits can be found online at https://www.senecawaterways.org/friends_of_scouting.

VOLUNTEER TO HELP FUND OUR SCOUTS’ ADVENTURES

The greatest resource we possess at Seneca Waterways council for the benefit of our Scouts is not our money – it is you! Our volunteers and families offer talents and knowledge to our Scouts every week during den meetings, troops meetings, Exploring activities, Crew events, Roundtable, and in District functions. One of the most meaningful ways in which you can give back to Scouts is by volunteering to help in our fundraising efforts – especially through Friends of Scouting.

There are a wide-variety of roles to serve in during our Friends of Scouting campaign. If you are in a unit, well organized, and personable – you can serve as your unit’s Friends of Scouting Coordinator. If you would like to share your Scouting story and the support Seneca Waterways Council gives to units in your area – you can become a Friends of Scouting presenter. If you have a few friends or businesses you think may support Scouting – you can work on the Community Friends of Scouting campaign. If you enjoy hearing other families’ Scouting memories as you chat on the phone – make calls during our monthly Friends of Scouting phone-a-thons. Not keen on asking for monetary gifts? Join us during the phone-a-thons and call to say thank you to those who have already given. There is a place for all in Friends of Scouting!

Be a part of something truly awesome this spring. On Friday, May 18, over 100 brave individuals will harness in and rappel down the side of the historic and iconic Kodak tower in downtown Rochester, all to benefit our urban outreach programs for underprivileged young people.

Over the past eight years, more than 460 brave individuals have harnessed up and rappelled down 19 floors in downtown Rochester as part of our annual 21 Stories for Scouts event. It’s been a signature event of the Council and one of the most recognizable and thrilling events in all of Rochester. But after seven years, it was time to offer a new thrill and who better to partner with than Kodak, a Rochester icon.

The event is easy to participate in and no prior climbing or rappelling experience is required. We partner with a company called Over the Edge who orchestrates this program all over the country and provides a trained team and equipment to make it a fun, safe and thrilling experience.

2018 is going to be an exciting year for 21 Stories. We have a new building, a strong committee, a goal of having more rappellers than ever before, and we have the return of “Little Joe” Aiello, now a 91-year-old bartender from Country Club of Rochester who in his inaugural rappel in 2016 raised over $41,000 for this event.

Take the “Little Joe Challenge.” If Little Joe can do it, you can too. All you need to do is make a contribution of, or raise $1,000 or more. (Wait -- It’s easier than you think!) (continued on page 12)

Final ResultsCongratulations to all of our popcorn-selling Scouts as they earned nearly $400,000 to help fund their Scouting adventures! An additional $400,000 was raised for Seneca Waterways Council to fund support for units in camping, training, technology, recruitment supplies, and administrative personnel. Thank you to all of the families and volunteers who made the 2017 Popcorn Sale the premier fundraising opportunity for our Scouts.

Popcorn Blast Off Day – April 28, 2018BLAST OFF! All of our top popcorn sellers are invited to the Wellington Space Center at J. Warren Cutler Scout Reservation (Camp Cutler) on April 28, 2018 for the Popcorn Blast Off Day. All popcorn sellers who submitted completely filled popcorn order forms during the popcorn sale (prior to the deadline) will be issued their rockets by their units starting in February. Please make sure to assemble the rockets at least a week prior to the Popcorn Blast Off Day. Launch times will be sent ahead of time and launch credential will be provided at registration. See you there space cadet!

Remaining ProductsSeneca Waterways Council has a limited supply of popcorn available for sale at our Council Service Center (2320 Brighton Henrietta Townline Road). Popcorn is a tasty treat regardless of season so stock up today because once the popcorn is gone, it is gone!

Thank you to Corporate Supporters – Gallina, Pike Co., and Wright BevEvery Fall, the Seneca Waterways Council popcorn sale reveals the generosity and support our communities give to Scouting. We see this not only in the thousands of customers who purchase popcorn but in the businesses who help with logistics of distribution.

We would like to share our deepest gratitude to Gallina Development, The Pike Company, and Wright Beverage Distributing for donating space, time, supplies, and services without which we could not have had a successful popcorn sale. Thank you!

SCOUTING SUCCESS IN 2017 FOR SENECA WATERWAYS

Troop 0195

Scouting is alive and well across the Rochester and Finger Lakes regions. For the second year in a row, we have more youth having fun and learning valuable lessons that will serve them for a lifetime in your programs. We are recruiting more youth and keeping them in the program longer. We have 3 great camps that provide world-class experiences for our Scouts and leaders for all levels of Scouting, and we continue to build strength in funding to continue our growth in the future. These results did not occur by accident. The efforts of a dedicated group of amazing volunteers at the Council, District, and Unit level are paying off in a big way, and our communities will be stronger as a result. This cannot be quantified, but one measure of your collected impact was that Seneca Waterways recognized 261

youth who earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2017. A lifetime of values for those young men and all the youth we serve is the real impact of your efforts.

All but one of the districts in the council achieved a level of distinction in our national Journey to Excellence program with 5 districts (Bay Waters, Black Creek,

Lighthouse, Mohawk, and Seneca) attaining the highest level of Gold. One of these districts will be honored with the 2nd Annual District Vision Award at the Council Volunteer Recognition Dinner on May 7th. For the 7th consecutive year (every year it has been offered), Seneca Waterways Council has earned the distinction of being a Gold Journey to Excellence Council. We are one of a shrinking group of Councils

across the United States who have received the highest recognition level every year it has been offered. Again, our success as Districts and as a Council is a direct result of the combined success in your programs. Every week, dedicated volunteers working hard to provide a great program for our youth. Know that your involvement makes a difference. Each District had many units achieving Bronze, Silver, and Gold Distinction in the Unit Journey Excellence initiative and they are recognized below. If you feel that your unit should have been recognized and they are missing on this list or if you feel an error was made, please speak with your District Executive and be sure they have received your JTE form and we will be sure to include them in the official record.

CUB SCOUT ELECTIVE DAYS

Cub Scout Elective Days are opportunities for Cub Scouts to earn adventures or electives toward rank requirement with the support of subject matter experts.

Being a den leader is a challenging role and we want to help our den leaders be successful. Sign Scouts up for elective days to give Scouts the opportunity to advance in rank without doing a lot of work on your part. Just sign the Scouts up, have parents attend with the Scouts and the Scout should work through each of the requirements for the elective.

Belt loops are awarded upon completion of the elective or adventure.

Cub Scout Elective Days are scheduled throughout the year at the Scout Service Center in Rochester.

For Scouts who like science and exploring cool technology, this merit badge workshop is for you! Seneca Waterways Council and SUNY Geneseo are offering an opportunity to earn either the Energy OR Nuclear Science Merit Badges. The program will be held in two parts. First, Scouts will attend an orientation session to go over all the details and requirements that must be completed. The final session will be at SUNY Geneseo for exciting activities that include making a cloud chamber, touring Geneseo’s e-Garden, seeing a particle accelerator a.k.a. an atom smasher, and more.

Saving, producing, and using energy wisely will be critical to America's future. If we are to leave future generations with a world in which they can live as well or better than we have, Scouts and other potential leaders of tomorrow must begin the hard work of understanding energy and the vital role it will play in the future.

Earning the Nuclear Science merit badge is a chance for Scouts to learn about this exciting field at the cutting edge of science today. Both the Energy and Nuclear Science Merit Badges are one of the elective merit badges for the William T. Hornaday awards for Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts.

In addition, the sessions will be lead by authors of both the Energy Merit Badge and Nuclear Science Merit Badge books! Professor Dennis Showers, an Eagle Scout, wrote the Energy merit badge book. Professor James McLean who also was a Scout, will run the Nuclear Science session. At the conclusion of the program, there will be a book signing for Scouts to have their Energy Merit Badge books signed by the author, Professor Showers.

The orientation session will be scheduled for the end of March (date being finalized yet) and the final session is set for April 21st at SUNY Geneseo from 9am-3pm in conjunction with Earth Day! More details will be available on the council's website soon, emailed to registered members, and posted in the council's weekly newsletter, Currents. If your Scout has any questions, contact Mary Ellen Smith, Marketing Communications Manager, 585-241-8544 or email her at [email protected].

Call or email today to reserve your spot. Each workshop is limited to 18 participants and will be on a first-come first-served basis. There will be a minimal fee to participants ranging from $5 to $15 for workshop materials (merit badge book not included). Scouts are required to have their own merit badge book.

LEAVE YOUR LEGACY IN SCOUTING WITH A CHARITABLE BEQUEST

The Seneca Waterways Council is among the strongest and most highly rated Councils in the country with exceptional programs, a growing membership and strong camps. We are also beneficiaries of the legacies of Scouters and families who have left the Council in their estates to ensure that Scouting is here for generations to come.

In 2016, we were beneficiaries of over $170,000 in estate gifts, all of which are permanently restricted to our Council’s Endowment Fund.

Our Council’s Endowment Fund provides support to our Council operations without touching the principal. Our Board of Trustees provides oversight and strategic direction to maximize our investments and grow the fund.

For many, adding the Seneca Waterways Council as a bequest in your estate planning is an easy and very impactful way to make a huge difference and leave a legacy.

A bequest is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an advisor, you simply include language in your will or trust specifying a gift to be made to Boy Scouts of America as part of your estate plan. You

can establish your legacy, and it remains revocable at any time during your life. For donors with taxable estates, charitable bequests are completely tax deductible when distributed.

There are many types of bequests you can consider, including:

1. General—A designated amount of money, such as “$10,000.”

2. Specific—A certain item, such as “my 100 shares of IBM stock,” “my home at 123 Main Street,” “my original Norman Rockwell painting,” etc.

3. Percentage—A designated percentage of your estate, such as “10 percent.” This helps protect against inflation, reducing the value of your bequest.

4. Residuary—Gives Scouting all or a percentage of anything left after all general and specific bequests are satisfied.

5. Contingent Bequest—Only takes effect if another bequest fails, such as “If my father should predecease me, then this should go to the XYZ Council, BSA.”

Many donors establish “testamentary” charitable trusts in their wills. These are just like the “regular” annuity trusts or unitrusts—the only difference is they are funded or created in your will. Also, for donors who use living trusts, Scouting and other charities can easily be included in those.

Our Council’s Planned Giving Committee under the leadership of Vice President Bud Rusitzky stands ready to assist anyone in making an estate gift to the Council a reality. For more information or with any questions, contact Director of Development Tony Vogl at (585) 241-8556 or [email protected].

YOUTH POWERApril 26, 2018

The Seneca Waterways Council is proud to recognize Finger Lakes Technologies Group President and CEO Paul Griswold with the Distinguished Citizen Award at our annual Youth Power Dinner on Thursday, April 26 at Cobble Creek Country Club in Victor. This annual event recognizes individuals whose leadership and influence are emblematic of the ideals of Scouting. Youth Power draws businesses together to raise money to support our Scouting programs in the Finger Lakes.

Tables, ads and additional event sponsorships are available. If you or your business would like to be a part of Youth Power, contact Laurie Bauer at (585) 241-8526 or [email protected].

EAGLE SCOUT NETWORKING

Over 6,000 men living within the boundaries of the Seneca Waterways Council are Eagle Scouts, but most of whom are not currently active as a parent, leader or mentor. We’d like to change that.

We are actively working to form a local National Eagle Scout Association Committee that can assist in reaching out to our alumni and finding ways to reengage them with Scouting. In 2017, we hosted nine Eagle Scout After-Hours at local establishments as a point of entry and we are looking to continue those in 2018. There’s no cost to attend and no ask for money, simply an opportunity to “smell the campfire again” and share where life has taken you.

Eagle Scouts can be mentors, sponsors, open doors, serve as leaders … the opportunities are endless. For more information on how you can be involved, email Tony Vogl at [email protected].

POPCORN SUCCESSThe 2017 Popcorn Sale was a HUGE success with over $400,000 in funds going to our units. The average unit’s sale increased for the second consecutive year, indicating growing public interest in funding our Scouting program. While all Scouts did their best, some Scouts entered the stratosphere with their efforts.

Congratulations to the Popcorn Sellers listed below who sold over $1500 in popcorn. This list was generated from information submitted to the Council by our units. We apologize for any omissions.

The importance of Technology and STEM related careers was introduced to city school students last summer as part of an exciting science, technology, engineering and mathematics pilot project. Finger Lakes STEM Hub, AT&T, Rochester City School District, Rochester Museum & Science Center, and Seneca Waterways Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s Exploring Program partnered to launch an innovative STEM project titled “Technology and Careers in Rochester Powered by AT&T.”

The pilot project was a summer school class supported with online lessons and resources offered by the Rochester City School District. Sequenced

interactive exhibits and hands-on career exploration activities aligned with the course curriculum. The partnerships allowed for the course to be supplemented by field trips to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) to build curiosity and interest in construction, manufacturing, transportation, energy and power through its interactive exhibits. The course also allowed for students to interact with businesses/professional association representatives that sponsor an Exploring post established by the Seneca Waterways Council. The project was supported by a $20,000 contribution from AT&T.

AT&T’s support for this program is part of the company’s legacy of supporting educational programs focused on STEM disciplines in New York through AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature $400 million philanthropic initiative that drives innovation in education by bringing

diverse resources to bear on the issue including funding, technology, employee volunteerism and mentoring.

The Technology and Careers project had four components designed to introduce students to a broad range of STEM related careers.

The City Living component with partner RCSD gave students the opportunity to learn how Rochester businesses are developing, innovating, and testing new and exciting technologies.

Building Curiosity and Interest in STEM Related Areas of Construction, Manufacturing, Transportation, and Energy and Power with partner RMSCprovided for exploration and discovery through hands-on exhibits and activities that encouraged students to better understand their role in Rochester’s future

Technology and Careers in Rochester STEM project powered by AT&T

success. Students also took on four design challenges in the Inventor Center maker space.

From Curiosity and Interest to Specific Careers in Action exposed students to real world career experiences with engineers, architects, and advanced manufacturing employees.

The final component, "Beyond the Summer," encouraged positive youth development and offered workplace experiences at the RMSC to at-risk students currently enrolled at local high schools. RMSC offers a Career Ladder program which would present further opportunities for students after completion of the City Living course.

Seneca Waterways looks to more collabo-rations with groups to foster STEM op-portunities and education for area youth.

BLACK CREEK!!!The District is JTE Gold for the first time in a few years. More importantly we were Plus 1 in Membership for the first time

in many years. Neither one of these things could have happened without each and any every one of you. This was truly a team effort. So thank you and congratulations to each of you on a successful 2017 and here’s to your continued success in Scouting in 2018! Scouting is STRONG in Black Creek and we are moving forward…thanks to the BEST volunteers in the Council!

Scouting For Food Scouting for Food and Clothing will be upon us before you know it. Soon the snow will be gone and we will be doing our annual food drive. Please keep the Saturday mornings for March 17 and 24 free on your calendars and pitch in when your unit contacts you to help with this community event. Everything collected on March 24 stays right in your hometown. The local food pantries have come to depend on us each year to refresh their stores after winter.

property on East River Rd. There will be train rides, museum tours, and much more. You don’t want to miss this event!

Pinewood Derby Our District Pinewood Derby will again be in April this year. This annual event is always a great time. The District derby serves as the precursor to the Council Pinewood Derby, planned for May 19. Save these dates, too! Did you know there’s a separate class in these events for Boy Scouts?

Spring Recruiting Black Creek District will be making significant efforts to bring more Scouts into our awesome program this spring. Did you know that you can sign up for the Scouting program at ANY time of the year? Bring some friends to one of your meetings or cool events. Journey To ExcellenceJourney to Excellence (JTE) Scouting’s Journey to Excellence is the BSA’s planning, performance, and recognition program designed to encourage and reward the success of our units, districts and councils. It is meant to encourage excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA.

JTE GOLD in 2017!For the SIXTH year in a row, Bay Waters District is a Journey to Excellence GOLD District! In 2017, the district focused on recruiting, invigorating, and revitalizing leadership around the area. We held numerous programs geared towards Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing youth. We improved our retention numbers and were among the top districts in the council with regards to our fundraising efforts.

District CommitteeThe Bay Waters District Committee is searching for a few good women and men to help deliver a great program to all youth across the district. We are currently

looking for adults with passion in finance, membership, or program to help share ideas and plan the direction of the district. If you, or someone you know, is interested in helping out please contact Bay Waters District Committee Chair Steve Mills at [email protected]. The group typically meets the third Monday of the month in Penfield.

District Pinewood DerbyThis year’s annual District Pinewood Derby will take place on Saturday, April 7th from 9:00 to noon. STEAM CampsFinger Lakes Community College has teamed up with Exploring for another summer of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Geneva and Newark Campuses are joining in on the fun too!

All three camps will run from Monday to Friday 9a-3p. Victor's STEAM Camp will once again feature all aspects of STEAM. Geneva's STEAM Camp will focus on STEAM from a bio-medical, healthcare standpoint. Newark's STEAM Camp will look at STEAM from an earth science and agriculture standpoint. The camp program is taught by college professors. The camps will feature hands-on projects and lessons that allow the campers to dive deep into the world of STEAM from different perspectives. These camps are offered to young men and women entering 7th, 8th, and 9th grade.

We are looking for high schoolers, and adults to help volunteer throughout the weeks too! Those entering 10th grade

or above will be called Lab Assistants as they'll be responsible for working along side college professors delivering program. The other role that Lab Assistants may assume is the direct oversight of the campers, helping with different projects, etc.

Exploring First Responder Camp is for Explorers and Posts seeking a focused program in one of three exciting areas. It is a co-ed program open to anyone up to 21 years old. Exploring First Responder Camp is one of Babcock-Hovey’s Expedition Camps which are designed to refine your skills, challenge your limits, and for Explorers – help you develop a deeper understanding of the Emergency Services.

LAW ENFORCEMENT CAMP is designed by Police Officers specifically for Police Explorers. Practice all the skills you learn in your regular meetings, and add a bunch more. Spend some time on our range with our instructors and practice your sharpshooting skills with rifle, shotgun and pistols; work on your investigating skills; evidence collecting and much more! The last day of camp will include a simulated event that all Explorers will respond to and put your skills to work.

FIREFIGHTING CAMP is designed to let youth work on both skills they normally do and those they don’t normally do at post meetings. Fight live fire at the Fire Training Center, set up portable retaining ponds, rope rescue techniques, hydrant work and much more! Fire Explorers will put all of their newly acquired skills to use in our all Explorer simulated event on the last day of camp.

EMS/ MEDICAL CAMP is for all EMS/ Medical and Fire Explorers that want to learn more about their chosen field. Trainings will include scenarios, seminars, demos, certifications and lots of hands-on activities. Check out the mobile hospital room, practice on the sim mannequins, and much more. Medical Explorers will also participate in our camp wide simulation event on Friday, putting all their training to the test.

21 Stories (continued from page 4)

Individuals can set up a personal fundraising page at www.21storiesforscouts.org with a goal of raising $1,000 by May 18. At that point, it’s similar to a walk-a-thon in that you email friends, coworkers and family asking them to make small contributions toward your rappel. There’s even a handy fundraising guide full of ideas to make you successful.

Companies can participate too by either sponsoring an employee to rappel, or by sponsoring a team of five with a commitment to raise or contribute $4,000. There’s sponsorship benefits of course including event signage and a logo on the participant t-shirts. Most of our team sponsors will challenge their members to raise as much as they can, and then the company is only responsible for rounding up the balance.

Troops can sponsor a Scout and a Scoutmaster to rappel too. What a great way to recognize your newest Eagle Scout or thank your Scoutmaster. A parent/child or Scoutmaster/Scout pair is available for a commitment of $1,500.

Finally, some generous individuals will make a contribution to support an underprivileged Scout to have this experience to truly see beyond their boundaries.

We want to thank our partners at Kodak and MCC’s downtown campus for making

this event possible and giving us the use of their building and landing area. We’re also grateful to our lead sponsor Avangrid Foundation / RG&E for helping underwrite the event expenses so that more of the funds we raise can be directed toward our mission.

Complete details are online at www.21storiesforscouts.org or you can contact Tony Vogl (585) 241-8556 or [email protected] with any questions.

Make this your year to do something truly awesome that you will never forget. Commit to rappel today.
