Downtown has played a vital role in mywork and in my life during the past 23years that I have been with Trillium FamilySolutions. This social services agency hasalways been based in the center city – invarious locations including the formerUnited Way building and now the Sternand Mann building – with good reason.

Many of our clients live downtown or neardowntown. Many of the human servicesagencies with which we work are locateddowntown. So are the Stark CountyCourthouse and probate court – a veryimportant consideration because many ofour clients are involved in the court system.A bus line runs through downtown.

As a result, it simply makes good sense thatwhen Trillium moves into a larger facilitynext fall, it will be downtown – the formerPolsky’s building at 624 Market Ave. N.!We now own the building and are renovat-ing it, with generous donations and supportfrom Aultman, Huntington Bank, the StarkCounty foundations and others.

Owning the building will enable Trillium to have more control over its budget, eliminating rent that continues to rise inlarge increments and hefty parking fees for our 160 employees.

The new facility has contiguous free parkingand is more handicapped – accessible. It is nearly double the size of our currentcramped offices and will provide spacewhere I can conduct meetings with allemployees at one time – a first! A newphone system will enable us to connect with our other sites instantly, and, criticallyimportant, the space will be professional, fresh and clean. It speaks to the dignitywith which we hold our clients.

From a personal standpoint, I love beingdowntown. I can walk anywhere I need to go. I enjoy the variety of restaurants and like seeing people I know – great for networking! Downtown is a true neighborhood of very friendly people.

For The M. Conley Company, family values trans-late into social responsibility. Established nearly100 years ago and now in its fourth generation ofprivate ownership, the company is taking its deep-seeded commitment to its employees and the com-munity into an important new arena. It is quicklybecoming a business leader in sustainability andenvironmental responsibility.

“We have always focused on our own backyard,”said Kirsten Conley, creative director and brandmanager. “Environmentalism is one of our core val-ues. It is our social responsibility, and the marketdemands it.”

The company strives to make all internal operationsas eco-friendly as possible, recycling waste materi-als in its corporate offices as well as its distributioncenter with the help of Team M. Conley, a group ofemployees with a strong awareness of green val-ues that also helps carry out the company’s phil-anthropic spirit with charitable, community-mindedprojects.

The company is making strides toward a paperlessworkplace, converting to high-efficiency lightingand Green Seal-certified products for in-housecleaning, installing operable windows in the work-space to increase daylight and natural ventilationfor the benefit of its emp l oyees’ health and well-being, reducing printing in favor of an on-linecatalog, and conducting frequent training for itsstaff on the advancements of eco-friendly products, industry trends, ecological concerns, and up-to-d a te USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) environmental standards.

Perhaps most notable is the company’s cultivationof an on-staff environmental expert to serve as a resource not only for its own business, but also to its customers, the City and t he community.H o l ly Conley, the comp a ny’s env i ro n m e n tal c o n s u l tant, is in the process of comp l eting a stringent course of study to become a LEED AP(Leadership in Energy and Environmental DesignAccredited Professional). This credential demon-strates a thorough understanding of green buildingand the LEED Green Building Rating System, whichsets standards for environmentally sustainable con-struction, renovation and building maintenance.

Holly’s expertise was critical in helping the com-pany share its knowledge and build an awarenessof green services and products via the first annualGreen Exhibition Trade Show, launched this pastApril at, appropriately, The Metropolitan Centre, one of only four LEED-certified buildings in Ohio.Manufacturers presented green alternatives acrossall product lines distributed by The M. ConleyCompany. The company has branded these prod-ucts under the name “SPROUT” so their customerscan easily identify their eco-friendly choices.

“We hope that we opened some eyes about greenproducts and challenged some misconceptions thatenvironmentally conscious goods are more expen-sive or of lesser quality than others,” Conley said.

The M. Conley Company has branded a lineof eco-fri e n d ly products with the name‘sprout.’
