Sputtering by Particle

Bombardment

Experiments and Computer Calculations from Threshold to

MeV Energies

Earlier books on this subject, i.e. "Sputtering by Par-ticle Bombardment I - III" are nearly 20 years old,but since then a lot of new and important work hasbeen performed and published in international jour-nals. The planned book brings an overview aboutall the new results. This concerns especially a newsummary of the measured and calculated sputter-ing yields with an algebraic approximation formulafor the energy and angular dependence of the yields. This is especially useful for all colleagues, who needsputtering yields for physics and/or applied prob-lems. The computational methods for calculatingsputtering yields are critically reviewed, Molecu-lar dynamics calculations have not been covered inthe previous books on sputtering. The influence ofchemical effects on sputtering and the new modelsdeveloped in the last years for understanding theseeffects, such as for hydrogen ion bombardment ofcarbon, are outlined. New developments, such assputtering by MeV Ions and the mechanisms for [..]

Surface Plasmon Nanophotonics

The development of advanced dielectric photon-ic structures has enabled tremendous control overthe propagation and manipulation of light. Struc-tures such as waveguides, splitters, mixers, and res-onators now play a central role in the telecommuni-cations industry. This book will discuss an excitingnew class of photonic devices, known as surface plas-mon nanophotonic structures. Surface plasmons areeasily accessible excitations in metals and semicon-ductors and involve a collective motion of the con-duction electrons. These excitations can be exploit-ed to manipulate electromagnetic waves at opticalfrequencies ("light") in new ways that are unthink-able in conventional dielectric structures. The fieldof plasmon nanophotonics is rapidly developing andimpacting a wide range of areas including: electron-ics, photonics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. The book details many of the key issues associatedwith the scaling to nano-dimensions of silicon-on-insulator structures. Some papers offer new insightparticularly at the device/circuit interface as appro-priate for SOI which is fast becoming a mainstreamtechnology. An Introduction to the

Mathematical Theory of Dynamic

Materials

This book gives a mathematical treatment of anovel concept in material science that charac-terizes the properties of dynamic materials—that is, material substances whose properties arevariable in space and time. Unlike conventionalcomposites that are often found in nature, dy-namic materials are mostly the products of moderntechnology developed to maintain the most effec-tive control over dynamic processes. These materi-als have diverse applications: tunable left-handed di-electrics, optical pumping with high-energy pulsecompression, and electromagnetic stealth technolo-gy, to name a few. Of special significance is the par-ticipation of dynamic materials in almost every opti-mal material design in dynamics. The book discussessome general features of dynamic materials as ther-modynamically open systems; it gives their adequatetensor description in the context of Maxwell’s theoryof moving dielectrics and makes a special emphasison the theoretical analysis of spatio-temporal materi-al composites [..]

cesses

Diffusion is a vital topic in solid-state physics andchemistry, physical metallurgy and materials science.Diffusion processes are ubiquitous in solids at ele-vated temperatures. A thorough understanding ofdiffusion in materials is crucial for materials devel-opment and engineering. This book first gives an ac-count of the central aspects of diffusion in solids, forwhich the necessary background is a course in solidstate physics. It then provides easy access to impor-tant information about diffusion in metals, alloys, semiconductors, ion-conducting materials, glassesand nanomaterials. Several diffusion-controlled phe-nomena, including ionic conduction, grain-bound-ary and dislocation pipe diffusion, are considered aswell. Graduate students in solid-state physics, phys-ical metallurgy, materials science, physical and inor-ganic chemistry or geophysics will benefit from thisbook as will physicists, chemists, metallurgists, mate-rials engineers in academic and industrial researchlaboratories.

Physics of Ferroelectrics

A Modern Perspective

During the past two decades, revolutionary break-throughs have occurred in the understanding of fer-roelectric materials, both from the perspective of the-ory and experiment. First principles approaches, in-cluding the Berry phase formulation of ferroelectric-ity, now allow accurate, quantitative predictions ofmaterial properties, and single crystalline thin filmsare now available for fundamental studies of thesematerials. In addition, the need for high dielectricconstant insulators and nonvolatile memories insemiconductor applications has motivated a renais-sance in the investigation of these materials. Thisbook addresses the paradigmatic shifts in under-standing brought about by these breakthroughs, in-cluding the consideration of novel fabrication meth-ods and nanoscale applications of these materials, and new theoretical methods such as the effectiveHamiltonian approach and density functional theo-ry.

Mechanical Behaviour of

Engineering Materials

Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, and Composites

How do engineering materials deform when bearingmechanical loads? To answer this crucial question, the book bridges the gap between continuum me-chanics and materials science. The different kinds ofmaterial deformation (elasticity, plasticity, fracture, creep, fatigue) are explained in detail. The book al-so discusses the physical processes occurring duringthe deformation of all classes of engineering materi-als (metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites) andshows how these materials can be strengthened tomeet the design requirements. It provides the knowl-edge needed in selecting the appropriate engineer-ing material for a certain design problem. The readerwill thus learn how to critically employ design rulesand thus to avoid failure of mechanical components.‘Mechanical Behaviour of Engineering Materials’ isboth a valuable textbook and a useful reference forgraduate students and practising engineers.

Light scattering is a very powerful method to char-acterize the structure of polymers and nanoparti-cles in solution. Recent technical developments havestrongly enhanced the possible applications of thistechnique, overcoming previous limitations likesample turbidity or insufficient experimental timescales. However, despite their importance, these newdevelopments have not yet been presented in a com-prehensive form. In addition, and maybe even moreimportant to the broad audience, there lacks a sim-ple-to-read textbook for students and non-expertsinterested in the basic principles and fundamentaltechniques of light scattering. As part of the SpringerLaboratory series, this book tries not only to providesuch a simple-to-read and illustrative textbook aboutthe seemingly very complicated topic of light scat-tering from polymers and nanoparticles in dilute so-lution, but also intends to cover some of the newesttechnical developments in experimental light scatter-ing.

X-Ray Scattering of Soft Matter

Applications of X-ray scattering to soft matter haveadvanced considerably within recent years, both con-ceptually and technically – mature high-power X-raysources, synchrotrons and rotating anodes, as well ashigh-speed detectors have become readily available.High-quality time-resolved experiments on polymerstructure now can be performed with ease, a majoradvancement due to the genuine power of the scat-tering method. This manual summarizes the analyti-cal power of modern X-ray scattering in the field ofsoft matter. Description of simple tools that can elu-cidate the mechanisms of structure evolution in thestudied materials is followed by a step-for-step guideand breakdown of the more advanced methods. Da-ta analysis based on clear, unequivocal results is ren-dered simple and straightforward – with a stress onthe carefully planning of the experiments and ade-quate recording of all required data. To this end, thisbook serves as a useful ready-reference guide.

Lead-Free Electronic Solders

A Special Issue of the Journal of Materials Science: Materials

in Electronics

In the last few decades the effect of lead contami-nation on human health has received significant at-tention. Based on such concerns elimination of leadfrom ceramic glaze, paint, plumbing etc. has beenlegislated and implemented. However, till recently, solders used in electronics, remained lead-based. Theworldwide multi-facetted research efforts to arriveat suitable solutions, especially as the deadline forimplementation of lead-free electronic solders ap-proaches, have resulted in an exhaustive number ofresearch papers in several reviewed scientific jour-nals. Similarly there have been presentations in sev-eral national and international meetings of varioustechnical societies. It is impossible for any researcheror student to be aware of all the materials that havebeen, and are being, published in these many differ-ent sources, so it becomes essential to have most ofthe relevant and currently available information pre-sented in a single publication. With this goal in mindthe important issues [..]

Solder Joint Technology

Materials, Properties, and Reliability

Solder joints are ubiquitous in electronic consumerproducts. The European Union has a directive to banthe use of Pb-based solders in these products on July1st, 2006. There is an urgent need for an increase inthe research and development of Pb-free solders inelectronic manufacturing. For example, spontaneousSn whisker growth and electromigration inducedfailure in solder joints are serious issues. These reli-ability issues are quite complicated due to the com-bined effect of electrical, mechanical, chemical, andthermal forces on solder joints. To improve solderjoint reliability, the science of solder joint behaviorunder various driving forces must be understood. Inthis book, the advanced materials reliability issues re-lated to copper-tin reaction and electromigration insolder joints are emphasized and methods to preventthese reliability problems are discussed.

Computational Quantum Mechanics

for Materials Engineers

The EMTO Method and Applications

Traditionally, new materials have been developedby empirically correlating their chemical composi-tion, and the manufacturing processes used to formthem, with their properties. Until recently, metallur-gists have not used quantum theory for practical pur-poses. However, the development of modern densityfunctional methods means that today, computation-al quantum mechanics can help engineers to identifyand develop novel materials. “Computational Quan-tum Mechanics for Materials Engineers” describesnew approaches to the modelling of disordered al-loys that combine the most efficient quantum-leveltheories of random alloys with the most sophisticat-ed numerical techniques to establish a theoretical in-sight into the electronic structure of complex materi-als such as stainless steels, Hume-Rothery alloys andsilicates. The practical success of these approaches toapplications in all of these areas are covered in detail. The new EMTO-CPA method is detailed, includingits application in alloys to model [..]

Fundamentals of Radiation

Materials Science

Metals and Alloys

Radiation Materials Science teaches readers the fun-damentals of the effects of radiation on metals andalloys. When energetic particles strike a solid, nu-merous processes occur that can change the physi-cal and mechanical properties of the material. Met-als and alloys represent an important class of ma-terials that, by virtue of their use in nuclear reactorcores, are subject to intense radiation fields. Radia-tion causes metals and alloys to swell, distort, blister, harden, soften and deform. This textbook and refer-ence covers the basics of particle-atom interactionfor a range of particle types, the amount and spatialextent of the resulting radiation damage, the physicaleffects of irradiation and the changes in mechanicalbehavior of irradiated metals and alloys. Conceptsare developed systematically and quantitatively, sup-ported by examples, references for further readingand problems at the end of each chapter.
