SPRING Semester Applicants - Guidelines for Portfolio Submission BLA Open House/Handouts 05/20/13 Since 1911, the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program at ESF has been educating practitioners and teachers, designers and planners, advocates and policy makers, who have contributed their careers to a viable, sustainable integration of natural and cultural communities. The Department embraces a broad conception of the term “creative work” ranging from pencil sketching to poetry; however, for the purpose of indicating an aptitude for landscape architecture, portfolio work should focus on visually expressive examples, including both traditional and digital media. In particular, we are interested in seeing examples of freehand drawing, either from college or high school studio art coursework, or generated on your own time. The deadline for submission of transfer student portfolios for fall semester entry is November 1. Transfer applicants to the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture must be accepted for admission and have submitted a portfolio of relevant work for review by the Department of Landscape Architecture before they will be guaranteed space in required studio courses. Students submitting application materials and portfolios after November 1 will be considered for admission and assigned to a studio on a space available basis. A student's placement in a required studio course may impact the length of time required for degree completion. Once studio placement has been determined, it is wise to consult SUNY-ESF’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to be aware of any financial aid programs that may be affected by class level and time to completion. Freshman applicants are NOT required to submit a portfolio, however, it is often useful in planning the freshman year schedule, particularly for those students who have completed Advanced Placement (AP) or college art classes. PORTFOLIO CONTENTS and FORMAT Submittals will be used to assess drawing and other graphic communication skills, as well as spatial awareness and the ability to visualize and convey design ideas. If submitting portfolio items in hard copy, they should be no larger than 11” x 17”, generally consisting of good quality photographic, xerographic or scanned reproductions. Electronic submissions must be in a PDF file format on standard CD or DVD media. Color slides, prints of large or 3-D work and digital HTML “Web page” portfolios are also acceptable. Each piece must be labeled with your name, the year the work was completed, and some explanation of the drawing’s intent or the nature of the project it was addressing. Please do not send original artwork or rolled materials. Portfolios cannot be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed, pre-posted return envelope. SPRING Semester Applicants - Guidelines for

Portfolio Submission

BLA Open House/Handouts 05/20/13

Since 1911, the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program at ESF has been educating practitioners and teachers, designers and planners, advocates and policy makers, who have contributed their careers to a viable,

sustainable integration of natural and cultural communities.

The Department embraces a broad conception of the term “creative

work” ranging from pencil sketching to poetry; however, for the purpose of indicating an aptitude for landscape architecture, portfolio work

should focus on visually expressive examples, including both traditional and digital media. In particular, we are interested in seeing examples of

freehand drawing, either from college or high school studio art coursework, or generated on your own time.

The deadline for submission of transfer student portfolios for

fall semester entry is November 1. Transfer applicants to the

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture must be accepted for admission and have submitted a portfolio of relevant work for review by the

Department of Landscape Architecture before they will be guaranteed space in required studio courses. Students submitting application

materials and portfolios after November 1 will be considered for

admission and assigned to a studio on a space available basis.
