Roger Brown is a fifth grade student at the Charles Townes Center. He plays soccer, is on the speech and debate team, and participates in Lego League robotics. This year his robotics team won the state tournament. The team created a website and spoke at County Council highlighting the problem of lead weights (from cars) getting into our waterways. Recently, two bills have gone before the SC state legislature to ban the use of lead weights in SC. Roger also plays the piano and likes to compose music.

Lisa Lipscomb is a school psychologist in a local school district. She lives with her “sweet-pea,” Robert, and her three furry children.

Sarah Magun is a classically trained singer who has come to consider the

upstate home after moving here in 2010. She has sung with Palm Beach Opera, IU Opera Theater and Greenville's own GLOW Lyric Theater.

Shona Fitzer is the daughter of Matt & Nancy Fitzer, co-president and co-founder of her school's Gay-Straight Alliance, and works at the Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery.

Jenna Tamisiea Elser is an active member of our choir, married to our Music Director, Christian Elser, and is a professional actress and director who has worked with theaters throughout the Southeast.

Jon Grier teaches music theory at the Greenville Fine Arts Center.

Beth Monteverde and her daughter Emmy have been members since a couple of ministers ago, aka, 2001 or 2002. Beth works full-time as the Queen of the Monteverde Estates, mostly taking care of the Princess Emmy, and all the other Kingdom Dwellers, be they beast, dragon or troll. She works part-time as a Driver for Princess Emmy, and finally, Beth works half-time as a Homeschooling Teacher, both for the Princess and her Co-Ops. Beth's proudest accomplishment is the Medal she was awarded for being the "Best Mom Ever." In her spare time, she sings a little bit.

Steve Compton is a social activist, environmentalist, and psychotherapist who sings in several musical organizations. Steve and the Fellowship were born in the same year in Greenville, SC.

David Wright teaches English and Creative Writing at Christ Church Episcopal School. He and his wife, Andrea, met as sophomores at Furman and have been together since. They have two children, Evey (5) and Caleb (1), and have been GUUF members for just over a year.

Newcomers! To learn more about our Fellowship, please fill out the yellow card on the back of the pew and drop it into the offering basket.

Recordings of Sunday Services may be ordered and picked up opposite the wooden entrance doors to the sanctuary where the Audio Stand is located or by email to [email protected].

If you would like a hearing device, please ask an usher.

to getting to know you better, even if you think we already know you pretty well.

CHILDREN’S SUMMER PROGRAMMING We’ll be enjoying TOOLBOX OF FAITH, a lesson series from the UUA’s Tapestry of Faith for children. The reason this curriculum is SO COOL is that we are offering the classes to FAMILIES, not just the children. Not only do we get to work and learn together, we also get to use REAL TOOLS to create REAL THINGS, and that is swell fun by itself. But the work of making and the real things also serve as object lessons about some part of our UU journey and practice. For example, we’ll learn how a MAGNIFYING LENS symbolizes the need to examine things carefully and how it enlarges and intensifies whatever we choose to focus on—and then we’ll use real magnifying lenses to examine some very interesting things, and learn how to use them to magnify the sun’s light enough to make fire! (Safely, of course.) In the lesson about how we use power constructively, we’ll use HAMMERS to build bird houses, and in the lesson on holding things together while remaining flexible, we’ll make DUCT TAPE wallets or lunch bags. Believe me; it’s going to be way cool. I hope to see many of the children AND their parents for these great lessons.

EXPLORING OUR UU FAITH

9:30-10:45 AM Sunday Mornings, April 3-June 5, Women’s Room downstairs Participants in this class grow in their ability to understand and clearly articulate their personal belief systems. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING – MAY 15, 2016 A congregational meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall after service on May 15. Please plan to attend.

RESTAURANT DINNER GROUP Where: Bova, (Five Forks Place at Publix Shopping Center), 2700 Woodruff Rd, Greenville When: Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 PM

We stopped at this inconspicuous little place for a quick bite after Covenant Circle one night, and it has become one of our regular haunts. What it lacks in ambiance is more than made up for in the fresh, tasty food. Not just great brick-oven pizza, but a nice selection of entrees, salads, and big sandwiches. The grouper is excellent, and their macaroni salad is a garlic-lover's dream. They also include a good selection of vegetarian dishes. Check out their website for more details www.bovapizza.com. As always, non-UU friends are welcome. Call or email Ken Flanagan, [email protected], 864-901-1945 to reserve places for you and your friends.

NANTAHALA 2016 RAFTING TRIPS SATURDAY, JUNE 11 and SUNDAYs JULY 24 and AUGUST 14, 2016 We encourage everyone to enroll in trips by mailing (or handing) us a check made out to Brookside Campground and Rafting well before each trip. We will conduct each trip only if we have reservations and pre-payments in our hands for at least 8 paddlers no later than seven (7) days before the trip. This will help us run safe and fun trips for everyone. A great outing for families and people of all ages with one caveat: you must weigh at least 60 pounds to raft on the Nantahala (hypothermia is the concern). See Complete Announcement in the June Flame for details.

Contact Merridee Harper ([email protected] - c. 864-304-7590) or Hal Smith ([email protected] - h. 864-244-9322, c. 864-982-3201) if you have any questions. Be sure to mail your Reservations and Pre-Payment Checks made out to Brookside Campground and Rafting to Merridee Harper, 21 Ashford Avenue, Greenville, SC 29609.

PAT’S PANTRY Please help fill our wagon to the brim. Particular needs are peanut butter, canned meat, canned spaghetti (any kind) and hearty soups. Toiletries are also always in need.

replenished. Donations may be made by t to the UUWoC at our 1135 State Park Road, Greenville, SC 29609, dropped in the Sunday collection basket with a notation that the payment is to go to the UUWoC Scholarship Fund, or online on the UUWoC website through PayPal. Thank you. - Carole Lavash

PASTORAL CARE UPDATE I am currently working to enlist a two-person team of Care Coordinators for each month, trying to ensure the pastoral care burden is not too great for any one person. I will be working closely with the monthly Care Coordinators to review ongoing needs as well as new things that arise during the month. The Care Coordinators will be the main point of contact for the person(s) in need and will be the liaison between that person, the care team and the Fellowship Administrator to ensure that needs are understood and coordination of the volunteers is maximized. We will have monthly training (on the fourth Sunday of each month) to make sure our Care Coordinators are well equipped.

I want to extend my great appreciation to all those who have agreed to be Care Coordinators, and to the many others who volunteer on a regular basis to offer support to GUUF members and friends.

Please let me know if you are willing to be involved in these efforts by sending an email to [email protected].

GAIHN HOSTING – URGENT NEED! It’s time for our spring hosting for the GAIHN families. They will be arriving on Sunday May 22 to stay for one week. Please join me in making our families feel welcome by volunteering. The most pressing needs we have are:

Volunteers to stay overnight (two volunteers per night) 7pm to 7:30am, during the week.

Volunteers to help entertain the kids for an hour one of the nights they are with us. Families can bring their own children to play with the kids from 7pm to 8pm.

Volunteers to help straighten up the classrooms and kitchen (women) and volunteers to help load the trailer (men) on Sunday, May 29 at 7:30am before classes start.

Volunteers to bring a meal one night. This can be a group, a family, or a few individuals.

Please let me know, as soon as possible, if you can help in one of the above ways. Many thanks, Jean Blank 239-0110 or 918-1317.

MEMBERSHIP SUNDAY Membership Sunday takes place on the first Sunday of each odd-numbered month. If you have decided to join our Fellowship, please go to the Choir Room at 12:15 after you get coffee or such. The meeting will take about 30 minutes. If you have any questions about becoming a member, please contact Liz McGrory at [email protected] or 410-924-6245.

Congratulations to rising seniors JEWEL SMITH and CLAIRE HENNIGAN on their recent election as the 2016-2017 Youth Co-Representatives to the Board!

It’s going to be a great year!

SERMON CD’S Could all those who have ordered a sermon CD, please pick them up as soon as possible. – Thanks from the sound crew.

KACEY ZUCCHINO – NARTHEX ARTIST Kacey Zucchino is the sister of our very own Steven Chapp, and a member of the Eno River UU Fellowship in Durham, NC. She has always loved fabric and textiles and, as a young child, made very basic patchwork quilts for her doll.

Kacey gained skills as an adult through stitching intricate embroidered designs on clothing and, although she has had no formal training in art, she lived overseas for many years and was deeply influenced by the textile arts of the Middle East and Africa.

Kacey gets her inspiration from many sources and incorporates the images she sees into her art. Her pieces are mainly abstract, are based on representative images and often evolve as she works on them.

As a lifelong environmentalist, Kacey embraces the use and gathering of natural materials and responds to the natural world that serves as her muse. She loves to use recycled fabric and objects, upcycling them into something new.

RECOGNIZING AND WELCOMING VISITORS In order to easily identify our visitors while at coffee hour after Sunday services, we ask them to use the green mugs provided at the Visitor’s Table in the Fellowship Hall. Please look for folks with one of these colorful mugs and greet them warmly.

Visitors – Please fill out a yellow card and let us know how you found us. You will find the green mugs at the Visitors Table which is to your left as you enter the Fellowship Hall. Please use a green mug each time for several visits, so we have the opportunity to get to know you.

GUUF DIRECTORY If you are a member of GUUF, you can access our online directory through the following link. You will need a password in order to open the file. If you do not have the password, or can’t remember it, please contact Stephanie on 864-271-4883 who will verify your
