Helen and I arrived at our Darling Harbour apartment late Saturday evening and headed off for something to eat. Didn't quite know exactly where we where going and found ourselves in 'China Town'........a 'veeeeery' interesting ex- perience as we found out and yes, you guessed it, that night we had 'chinese', which was our first 'try' out of a 'proper' Chinese res- taurant. Over the next few days, Helen went into "full shop- ping and training mode". Her 'theory' is...you have dinner the night before and then 'shop' it all 'off' the next day. We had a great time in Sydney, played tourists and visited most of the sights and also found time to see 'The Lion King' as well. And would you be- lieve it, the weather was quite warm (didn't see any hail stones at all!- heard about them, but that was all). Spent a day in the Hunter Valley wine region and found some really 'good stuff' and best of all we had lunch at a restau- rant we found, aptly called 'OSCARS'. Friday, we headed out to Nepean Shores Holiday Park in Penrith, about an Sleigh Courier - Spring 04 hour and a bit's drive west from central Sydney, and so began the start of an excellent weekend full of Samoyeds and yet more Samoyeds. That evening, a group of 'us Kiwi's' went out to din- ner at the 'Lone Star Steak House' in Penrith with some of our fellow Aus- sie's' and had a Great time. Putting names to faces did not prove to be a problem, especially after we had a few wines. We all made some new friends and caught up with some old ones (friends that is). The show started 10am Saturday at the Bill Spill- stead Complex, which was set out very professionally with tables and chairs around the main ring for the spectators and the ex- hibitor's marquee's erected behind them, all of which had a good view of the proceedings. When the dogs began their classes (the dogs where shown on Saturday and bitches on Sunday along with the 'In Show' finals) it was an amazing sight to see, when you have numbers like 14 dogs in ‘Intermediate', 25 in ‘Australian Bred' and 22 in 'Open', it truly is an impres- sive sight to see that many dogs in the ring and with similar numbers on the Sunday for the bitches, you could be forgiven for not remembering all that went on. It was great not having to groom and prepare any dogs. You could talk to people, take photographs and watch all that was go- ing on without the pressure of "how long have we got before we are on". I was also most impressed with the judge, Mrs J Non- hof (Moonlighter Samo- yeds, USA) if not only for her memory and her pa- tience (she was smiling all the way through for both days) and for the superb job she did. She had a mammoth task of picking first, the placings of each split class and then the final line up, how she man- aged it I do not know, but she did. The Best In Show winner, Aust. CH. Kalaska Sheer Excellence (Lenny) did her judging 'justice', as he is a dog with 'show presence' and was expertly handled By Jamie Beard (Kalaska Kennels). President's Report

Wanda has just chased me up on this report so I am rushing to get it done before I take off early tomorrow morning for Sydney and the Aus-tralian Samoyed Na-tional 2004. This is a huge show by Samoyed standards and held every three years in a different part of Austra-lia. I think I am right in saying the entry is around 200 Samoyeds. There are several New Zealanders going over so it will hopefully be a rather social event. Getting back to New Zealand and the Samo-yed Club in particular – our next show will be the Open show in Taupo. Hopefully we will have a good entry to support what is for many the last show weekend of the year. I think a few of us will be camping on the grounds so if you want to join us or come along to say “Hi” please feel free. Lorraine has been busy with organizing the prizes and I am sure they will be useful and up to the very good standard of prize our Club is well known to provide. Please help the Club funds by sponsor-ing a class. There is a range of dollar amounts so please talk to Lorraine for the details. There have been a few new Champions lately –

well done. Making up a champion is always an achievement especially when you have top win-ning dogs that you have to beat to get those much sought after Chal-lenge Certificates. I have to say I am pleased we have such a simple yet challenging way of making up Champions in New Zea-land. I find the Austra-lian system quite con-fusing by comparison. The Club also has some fun events lined up now that summer is hopefully just around the corner. We have a walk planned on the Hutt River for Sunday 19th September and the now Annual Snow Dog Match against the Sibe-rian Huskies and Alas-kan Malamutes in preparation for Novem-ber. Ads are some-where else in this maga-zine. Please support these events as they take quite a bit to organ-ize and really are good fun. Sometimes I think folks get just too serious at breed shows and it takes all the fun out of what is a great sport. I have been busy with obedience quite a bit this year and have really started to enjoy doing something else with my Samoyeds. There are some very good obedi-ence clubs so if you think you might like to

do something that bit different give obedience a go and don’t be put off by those who say Sams cannot do obedi-ence – they can !!!. Good to also see that a few more folks are out there giving sledding a go. The big event in the Sled dog calendar is Wanaka. Hopefully the Andy’s will give us a report back on their ad-ventures for the next magazine and have some dazzling photos to boot. Welcome to all the new members of the club. I hope you will have a happy and long asso-ciation with the Club. Remember the Club is here to help you with any aspects of your Samoyed ownership so if you require assis-tance please ask. Yours in Sams

Firstly, a big welcome to our new members. There have been a few of you lately with new puppies. If you are wanting any help with grooming, training etc, please don’t hesitate to contact someone on the committee. We are here to help. What a busy couple of months with lots of ba-bies born in both the North and South Is-lands. It will be excit-ing seeing all these youngsters in the ring (there is something about Samoyed pup-pies that makes you go “awwwww”) and hope-fully some new exhibi-tors. Just remember we were all new to the show ring at one stage so be nice and help

out where you can. Samoyed numbers in the show ring are drop-ping as of late so we don’t want to turn these people off, after all it is meant to be an enjoyable time out with your dogs. Don’t forget entries for our Open Show close on the 10th October. This show will not be advertised in the Ken-nel Gazette. It is being held in Taupo so even if you aren’t exhibiting come down and intro-duce yourselves. I personally, am looking forward to travelling up to Taupo and catching up with you people fur-ther North. Our Sammie walk is planned for Sunday

19th September if the weather allows it. It is being held in Upper Hutt starting at the Moonshine bridge and with a trail along the river bank, it is a lovely walk for you and your Samoyed. A map is included in this issue. Don’t forget to bring wa-ter for both you and your dog. Looking for-ward to seeing you! Please if you have any fund-raising ideas, con-tact the committee. We are at the moment sell-ing chocolates so if you think you can sell a box or two, contact us. Until next time

or would like to buy a few bars or a box please contact Si-monne MacMillan. The Club has several Samoyed Badges for sale. The badges are 30mm by 30mm in size and have a clasp on the back. They are $7 each.

The Club continues to operate successfully and the membership has increased by 9 to a total of 60. Cadbury chocolate bars for sale at $2 each or $40 per box (20 bars) continue to prove popu-lar. If you would like to help with selling a box

The Club also has an assortment of Samo-yed themed greeting cards for sale. Inside the cards have a Christmas greeting or are blank. They are $7 for 10 or $1 each

It all started when staying with friends in Christchurch who are into racing Siberians and Mala-mutes. I asked if I could put my dogs in harness and take a picture ‘for a laugh’! Sure, Nathan said, we can take them out and give them a go if you don’t mind getting your powder puffs dirty. Well that was that, I was hooked! What an awesome experience to be pulled by my babies!

My first race was in the forests of Hamner Springs on the 31st July this year. Due to illness my train-ing hadn’t gone as planned, but I was keen as keen to give it a go. I was running in a 2 dog scooter race with Sharna (NZ Ch Penza Snow Mist), my 91/2 year old bitch and Zeus (NZ Ch Vashka Song and Dance, Imp Aust) my 41/2 year old show dog. Sharna was the confident puller and Zeus was the fit runner. Originally he was a bit unsure on what to do, but he soon had picked it up with Sharna doing the hard work initially (typical Male leaving the hard work to the Girl!). The race was just under 5km in distance and we had one Saturday night and another Sun-day morning. I had never ran the dogs 2 days consecutively, so this alone was an achievement in its own! Saturday morning was my first ex-perience watching the rig teams go out for the longer races. What an overwhelming experience it was with excited dogs literally scream-ing and jumping in the air wanting to run, very deafening to be there! We were racing at about 5pm so it was not quite as cold as it had

been at 7am in the morning in the middle of the forest – learnt that thermals are a wonderful thing, and next time takes even more!!!! I was the 2nd team to go out, so was very nervous as couldn’t watch any others go, Nathan and Cheryl, Andy and Denise and many others were very helpful, and my good friend Hannah came to help me too. Waiting at the start line was really nerve wreck-ing – was I going to make it??? 10 seconds, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and we were off. Had a slight tangle on the start line, but the dogs took off well and were great with other teams passing. I had never even trained with any others before, let alone raced! They loved to chase and I was very pleased with how they went. Sharna struggles with her age and on the 2nd part of the course it became evident that her speed was not as good as Zeus, but she is a real wee puller and has a big heart. The last 800 me-tres up hill was a challenge as I had bronchitis at the time and was struggling with my fitness due to this. When everyone on the finish line started calling the dog’s names they took off again and ran well for home. Crossing the line was an amazing high! I was exhausted and had nothing more left in me, as were they! People appeared in all di-rections to take the dogs, my scooter, and look after them for me so I could recover, it was so touching to have people help and care for the dogs so much. The next morning was an early start so off I went again, this time 4th from last so more time to watch others and not near as nervous as it was the same course and so I knew where to go. It was evident that the dogs were very tired from the day before as even Zeus gave up going full speed about 200me-tres out from the start (or maybe

he got smart to it!). Andy Reeves and I had a great time tootling around the course and he was a real help to me as I was really struggling health wise myself. Coming to the last hill he overtook me and even called my dogs to get them running again, this was awesome sports-manship, something that would be great to see more of in all aspects of the dog world! On the home strait I caught up to about 1 metre behind and it was a ‘drag race’ to the finish line with the 2 Samoyed teams! Wish I had had a photo as it would have looked so neat! My guys ran out off puff about 20metres from the finish so finished just behind Andy, Tyson and Demon. Once again helpers were on hand to take care of dogs so I could recover! At prize giving I was congratulated on my first races and treated in such a positive, encouraging way, it was such a nice feeling. My first race was completed in 18minutes and Sundays was 21minutes, showing that yes, the dogs were stuffed (so was their Mum)!!!! Now I no what it is all about my dogs will again next year trans-form from Powder Puffs to dirty racing Sams and back again! Sharna will most likely not be racing again due to her age, so will need to find a buddy to team Zeus up with, but am looking forward to next racing season and to improving on my per-formances. But what an achieve-ment on its own to race them and complete the 2 races. Karen Kissell Silvamist Samoyeds, Nelson

Chocolate ok for humans Help us fundraise and look after your dog by

eating all the chocolate!

This guy sees a sign in front of a house "Talking Dog for Sale." He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the back yard. The guy goes into the back yard and sees a dog sitting there. "You talk?" he asks. "Yep," the dog replies. "So, what's your story?" The dog looks up and says "Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world lead-ers, cause no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wander-ing near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired." The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says "Ten dollars." The guy says he'll buy him but asks the owner, "This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him?" The owner replies, " Because he's such a complete liar."

Chocolate toxic to dogs

H ow many times have you heard someone confess that they love

chocolate themselves and sometimes give their dog a few pieces although they have heard that it is not good for dogs and could make them sick?

That is, unfortunately, quite a common occurrence but the truth is that you are not doing your dog any favours as far as health is concerned. Chocolate contains theobro-mine, a toxicant responsible for causing canine illness. Signs of theobromine poison-ing include vomiting, exces-sive thirst, diarrhoea, rest-lessness and agitation.

These signs usually develop in six to eight hours. Kidney damage, seizures, heart rhythm irregularities and death may result, in severe cases. There is no real anti-dote for a theobromine over-dose. Support and care can be given, and vomiting can be induced if the poisoning is recognised early enough. Obviously the best course of action is not to feed your dog chocolate to begin with and to be sure to hide your own chocolate stash so your dog can't help himself!

Luckily this seems to be what usually happens - human owners with a chocoholic habit do not want their dog to find and demolish their

stores, so are generally care-ful about where they keep them. Perhaps the biggest danger could be from visitors or children who may leave chocolate they have brought with them, or been given, in an accessible place, such as on a coffee table.

White chocolate, however, follows different rules. Some dog treats are available dipped in white chocolate. Is this safe?

The answer is yes. Regular dark chocolate is made from cacao beans, the source of high levels of theobromine, a caffeine-like substance. White chocolate, on the other hand, is made from cocoa butter, which is safe for dogs. The amount of theobromine in powdered cocoa varies, but it can be quite high. Usu-ally, the darker the chocolate the higher the theobromine content. The amount of caf-feine in different chocolate products is also extremely variable. For example, un-sweetened baking chocolate reputedly has up to 10 times the caffeine of milk chocolate.

This means that as an after-dinner snack or supper treat, white chocolate is less likely to keep you awake half the night than dark chocolate. So what about the chocolate nib-bles made especially for dogs - do they contain theobro-mine? The answer here is no. Manufacturers have formu-

lated them to contain extra vitamins and minerals and to have various added qualities.

They are made especially for dogs, and although they are called choc drops, the name is not ac-curate - they are made of carob, and are therefore quite safe.

If you eat chocolate your-self you may like to keep a packet of 'chocolate' treats for your dog so that you can give him/her a treat when you succumb to the nibble habit yourself (and it does pro-tect you from that feeling of guilt when your dog tries on the "sad eyes and drool-ing" look that they all keep in re-serve for just such occa-sions).

However, you must re-member that dogs are al-ways healthier without chocolate in any form and even the specially pro-duced treats should be used only on very special occasions - not as a daily substitute for some TLC from you as the dog's owner. From k9magazinefree.com

My first impression was the close resem-blance your exhibits bore to ours and after opening the catalogue I understand why. The youngsters of both sexes were very promising with the bitches being more even type than the dogs. Despite their variations, the dogs fared the better in the run offs. We have common problems particularly short upper arms and straight shoulders, neither long or short backs are rare. Length of leg must be watched, for here we have quite a few exhibits that I feel require a greater length of leg. While the feet here are not too bad, yours were much better. I felt that your guard coats could be harsher and more profuse. In my critiques of individuals I have remarked on some being heavier than I like, as the stan-dard calls for the weight to be "in proportion to size", it did not affect any of my placings. However as reindeer are smaller than cattle, a dog as robust as a Rottweiler is not neces-sary. A large dog like a large car consumes more fuel, and as the Arctic is not the Garden of Eden so a dog’s appetite could well be im-portant to the tribesmen, hence my comments. I believe the weights of 45lb to 56lb for dogs and 35lb to 45lb for bitches, which were in earlier standards, should have been retained to give an understanding of the conformation of a medium sized dog who is expected to be able to work in the snow. As breeders and exhibitors we should be con-centrating on producing Samoyeds that are not only beautiful but capable of returning to the Arctic and performing the same tasks as the dogs of a century ago. Unfortunately dog shows are becoming nothing more than beauty parades. We need to compare our dogs against the pictures of that era, dogs that were the models for the original standard. We need to endeavour to breed to the standard rather than adapt the standard to what we are breeding. I was once told we should forget dogs of yesterday and progress. Have we? Thank you for inviting me and I hope that ex-hibitors enjoyed the show as much as I did. Sincerely Robert Willis

days, recheck, give for 2 more days. Be-cause she still wasn't right, full x-rays were done on both front legs. The vet and I were shocked to find a large bone in her paw broken. When I picked her up from the Vet's, she had a large bandage on her leg and a Hood on her head (she now had New Nick-names Hooky or Hoppity!!) The vet's instructions to me "Don't let her get the bandage wet". It has been a very wet winter and she was partly toilet-trained. So we started experi-menting with different plastic bags and how to tie them on! Eey-ore's mission was how fast she could pull it off again! Inside water bowls became a problem. She managed to get her bandage into all sorts of bowls (including ones that hung on the cage door !) So I brought her a 'drip-feed' water bottle to attach to the cage. She walked around on the bandage without a problem and could run as fast as her sisters

The story of Eeyore with the broken tail. She was one of the largest pups born but had a bend at the end of her tail, so was nick-named HOOK. Eeyore and 1 of her sister's were the lucky pups to go with their mum (Meecha) back to live with Wanda and Glen, for about 10 days, until they were 6 weeks. The pups now lived in cages because they could climb out of the Whelping Box (even with the exten-sions ! ). One evening, going to let Eeyore out, she managed to put her leg though the bars in the cage and let out a yell. I picked her up and cuddled her, which took a while for her to settle, pre-sumed that she had given herself a fright. The next day she was walking on the leg, but it was sore. Fol-lowing day and still not better, so off to the vet we went. The vet found a slight swelling in 1 paw but No Pain ! Eeyore was given some anti-inflammatories for 2

(when she was al-lowed to play with them) The bandage was changed after 7 days because of how fast pups grow. She had nearly worn the bot-tom out of the ban-dage! Another 7 days and the x-rays showed that the bone had healed. It has been 2 weeks since the bandage has been off and it has taken this long for her to go back to walking on it. The coat and skin are fine, I did dry the leg for the 1st few days when she went out-side (because you could see that it was a bit itchy) The other interesting thing is that her tail has carried on grow-ing at the end and now has a double curl (it is a fault) but I have never seen anything like it before. Now she just needs to find a home?

Continued for page 1 -Sydney, the Samoyed show and more I did hear that some exhibitors got up at 4.30 a.m. to bathe their dogs ready for the days showing, is that dedication or what?. Throughout the weekend we had 'sunshine'.... LOTS of it, making us think it must be summer. Yet again, 'us Kiwi's' made our presence known to our Australian friends in a very positive way. We may not have won the big one (Best in Show), but Sandii, with her New Zealand exported bitch 'Polar Glory N Bliss with Kimskaya' took out Puppy in Show, proudly supported by Karla and the rest of us. We didn't stop there, Lynne Barr won the 'FIRST' prize in the raffle, a magnificent 'Royal Dalton' statuette of an elegant lady with a Samo-yed at her feet and I won the 'LAST' prize of the raffle, a somewhat LESS than mag-nificent 'Mitre 10' terracotta wine cooler. The only time we mentioned the rugby (the Bledisloe Cup) was when we had our group photograph taken, I just hope that they didn't chop our heads off in retaliation for it.

What made the biggest impression on me though was the parade of the 12 veterans, they all looked like they could still be a force in the ring and were enjoying 'their' moment. Some of them still have not grown up but the applause they received was warmly given by all the exhibitors and spectators and to add to this 'special mo-ment', they then lined up to present a 'Guard of Honour' to the dog CC Lenny' (Kalaska Kennels) and the bitch CC 'Dee' (CH. Aldonza Poison By Dior, Fay Tucker) as they came out for the Best In Show finals. It was, all in all, a great time, the show presentation and set up, the high quality and number of Samoyeds, the old friends we met and the new ones we made, it did make for a 'memorable' weekend. Though on a more 'sober' note, I did come across quite a few Kiwi's during the show who where 'hanging' out for a wine, does this mean that we celebrate our dogs a lot earlier or perhaps we just drink more............you can only guess. JUDGING RESUME

H ELEN HILL Melbourne, Australia I met my first Samoyed in 1974 as a puppy, just before I got married and spent 12 months in Perth, Western Australia. This dog came to live with us when we returned to Melbourne. He

was registered and when I finally got his papers I contacted the Samoyed Club, became a member, and started showing. This dog was Ch Kalina Imperial Luna and with the help of Jane Sydenham-Clarke han-dling him, he won best in groups and a best in show. I was hooked. Ch Ladara Fair Zaminka and Ch Kalina Fair Zala followed and Mezen Kennels was established. I started going to judges lectures in 1980 so that I could study about breeds and learn what went into making them unique. My main goal was always to increase my knowledge of breed type and construction so that I could incorporate this information into my breed-ing. I enjoy judging and the challenge of trying to find the dog that is described in the stan-dard. I have spent much time discussing with breeders of the various breeds in the Utility and Non-Sporting group the merits of the various dogs, always spending time with those breeders who were honest and genuine in their praise and fair in their criticism of the dif-ferent dogs. I have a love of all dogs and appreciate a good one no matter what breed it is. Due to other commitments I have not pursued other groups and though I do judge working and gun dogs at Open Show level I am happy at this time to specialise within my two groups.

Reporting Sheets for all The Samoyed Inc shows will be sent out by email only unless a hardcopy is asked for. So please make sure we have your up to date correct email address. Please send to Anita Andrew: [email protected]
