Totally Timbre

Timbre is a fancy word to describe the unique sound of each instrument or voice. Composers select specific

instruments or families of instruments for their timbres. When you have the chance to play an instrument, you will

probably choose one for the timbre (way it sounds).

Instrument timbres are created by a combination of things, including the materials used to make an instrument

and the way the instrument is played. Of course, every musician brings his or her own personality to an

instrument, too, which impacts the timbre to some degree. However, we can sort instruments into categories, or

families, based on the general timbres. The four orchestral families of instruments are brass, woodwind, strings,

and percussion.

Brass instruments are often made of brass tubes. All brass instruments have a cupped mouthpiece into which

a player buzzes his or her lips. Brass instruments also have a bell-shaped opening where the sound comes out.

Woodwind instruments are often made from a variety of materials including metals, plastic, and wood. To produce

a sound, the player blows into the instrument either through or across a hole or through a thin piece of wood

called a reed. String instruments are easy to identify because they all use vibrating strings to produce sound.

Percussion instruments include any instruments that are struck, shaken, or scraped to produce sound.

In your music classroom, your teacher probably divides the classroom instruments into families based on the

materials used to make them. Common classroom instrument families include woods, metals, and skins.

Every human voice has a unique timbre, but just like with instruments, we can use general characteristics to sort

voices into categories. Common vocal timbres include soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. These timbres reflect the

range of pitches the singers can comfortably sing.

Define the term timbre in your own words:

Write the names of instruments that belong to each instrument family listed below.

Kenyan Folk Song

As sung by Lillian Nkirote, age ten

Kanyoni KanjaThe Silly Bird

Lillian Nkirote, a ten-year-old girl in the music academy, taught me this song about a silly bird. This is one of

the more popular songs in the area of Kenya where we were teaching. Children and adults alike can sing it in its

entirety. Don’t be intimidated by the Kimeru lyrics. This song has a lot of repetition.

This song was originally sung to me in E major. I raised it to G major so that it could easily be played on the recorder.
