At the core of a Caldwell College education is our liberal arts curriculum. Students develop the whole self as they absorb learning through our liberal arts core: the humanities; the physical and biological sciences, and mathematics; the social sciences; and the enriched core which includes catholic and dominican tradition, global awareness and cultural understanding, and ethical inquiry and applications.

The knowledge, intellectual skills, sensitivities and creativity you acquire transcend any major of study and profession for a lifetime of growth.

Why do I need an orientation???

now that Caldwell’s online program is becoming more popular, we know that some students are combining online and external so this is our opportunity to explain the differences.

What to expect in an online course…Online courses are equivalent to regular, in class courses. The

difference is that students don’t have to spend time commuting to class.

These courses are different than external course in that they require more weekly interaction with the online course.

Online courses are highly interactive and there is a significant discussion component to them. Depending on the professor, you will also be required to log in a certain amount of times per week.

You can work on these classes at the times that are convenient to you but you WILL HAVE DEADLINES of when assignments are due.

You should expect to dedicate 2 hours per credit per week towards each online class you take. This includes online work including posts and outside online work.

In order to participate successfully in an online course, you must have reliable internet access, including an email account and access to the web.

How are online courses designed???

You will need to log in to your interactive classroom called Moodle.

What will you find posted on Moodle?? Syllabus Supplemental reading Forum room (discussion area) Attachment (area to submit assignments) Expectations for the course Deadlines Rules

Getting StartedIt is important that you become familiar with material & dates—the Academic Calendar is listed in every course offering brochure and on-line college catalogs. The calendar will provide you with the dates for:

Here’s the Scoop…What it is—what it will do—and why.

A Student NET ID (e-mail) Account will give you access to--the On-line databases from home to Jennings Library via the

college home page –www.caldwell.eduan E-mail account & access to the Computer Lab’s computers

and printersIt is the ONLY electronic address that you may use when

communicating with all College personnel. Your college email will be the main point of contact the college

will use to send information and updates. So it is important to check it on a regular basis.

Web PIN#/Password will give you access to—Your grades, schedule, student transcript, on-line registration

off of the college web site

ID card & ID #For security reasons, to gain access to events, you will use

this number instead of a SS# to identify you.To get into the movies cheaper!!!!

Before registration….

For new students: Before you are able to schedule your classes, you will need to take an assessment test online if you have not transferred the appropriate requirement.

1. Click on this link to take the appropriate assessment test: http://caldwell.learninghouse.com/course/view.php?id=423

2. You will then be asked to login. Login with your NETID Information.

3. Upon successful login you will be informed to type in the password. The password is caldwell.

4. After entering password select “enroll me in this course”5. Lastly, select the test you are required to take.

Assessments are given in english, math, and computer science.

Plan your semester-- Get yourself ORGANIZED...

• Regardless of your distance, you will feel like a part of the campus community and receive clear, personal advising through out your time here at Caldwell.

Planning• Get your books, tools, etc.

in advance.• Find a place to study• Review your syllabus• Prepare/post to a calendar

—it is important that you keep close track of your due dates (and other obligations as well).

• Write everything down!• No Surprises.• Don’t forget to plan in

Learning: The way a person prefers to learn is called his/her learning style. There is no right or wrong good or bad learning style. It has nothing to do with intelligence or skills. It has everything to do with the way a person's brain works to learn and store information efficiently. Since everyone learns differently, understanding your learning style(s) can help you become a better student.

The following forms are not necessarily forms you need to look for and complete. If it is not possible to come to campus, simply e-mail your academic advisor and the form will be filled out for you. These are for your reference.

An Incomplete is only granted in emergency situations with the approval of the Executive Director of the Center for Student Success, and meeting certain/specific criteria.
