AFTERNOON ACADEMICS Ages 3 - Kindergarten

Monday - Friday • 3:30 - 4:15 & 4:30 - 5:15 p.m.

Ms. Elizabeth Falls

Ms. Elizabeth will be teaching private lessons from 3:30 - 5:15 p.m. each afternoon. Lessons will focus on math and language (reading & handwriting) and is open to all preschool and kindergarten students. Lessons are filled on a first come first serve ba-sis and will be offered every afternoon in 45 min-ute increments. In order to keep the lessons in-dividualized, please note there is a two student

maximum per session.

SEWING Ages first - eighth grade

Wednesday, Thursday & Friday • 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. Spring 2012

Ms. Susie Long

Ms. Susie will offer a Sewing Studio on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 in Ms. Anita's classroom. The children will learn many different styles of sewing, including hand sewing (embroidery), and sewing on the sewing machine. Several different projects will be made at varying lev-els of ability. Learning to knit and crochet will also be offered. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED.

Art/Painting Montessori Based Curriculum

Ages first - eighth grade Monday & Tuesday • 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Ms. Anita Bender

Ms. Anita will offer an Art/Painting Studio on Monday or Tuesday afternoons from 3:30pm-5:30pm in Ms. Anita’s classroom. The approach I will take is one that was learned in my Mon-tessori training. The children will learn drawing skills (illustration & techniques), color theory (primary to tertiary; lessons on hues, tint-tone shade, value-shade, cool/warm color, polychrome-monochrome, brilliance-intensity, con-trast, complimentary, harmony, distance, atmosphere, shadows, mood, opacity/transparency, optical illusions), color mixing, studio art, design, perspective, collage, paint-ing. We will use a variety of mediums. We will study artists and art history including: Norman Rockwell, Impressionism,

Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Surrealism, Salvador Dali, Georgia O’Keefe, Asian Art and Native American Art, Ansel Adams, M.C. Escher, Modernism, Miro, Feininger, among others too endless to list.

Class Begins: Spring Semester Monday Class: January 9, 2012 Tuesday Class: January 3, 2012 *CLASSES WILL NOT TAKE PLACE ON TEACHER WORKDAYS! Each class will have 20 minutes of color theory, 10 minutes or more of Art History and eye training then we will spend our hour producing art. Some projects will take one class, others may take four classes to complete. My main focus will be teaching drawing techniques, painting in both acrylics and water color from paper to canvas. “Students with long-term study in the arts tend to score 34 points higher on the verbal portions of the SAT and 18 points higher on the math portion than those with less coursework in the arts.” - - College Entrance Board

CHESS CLUB Ages first - eighth grade

Tuesday • 3:30 - 4:10 p.m.

Mr. Richard Aslanian

All students in 1st to 8th grades are welcome to join. The requirements are a commitment to attending chess club, and a basic knowledge of the game. Students need to know the names of all pieces and how they move, how to set up a chessboard, and what the concept of a check-mate is. The purpose of the club is to play and improve skills, and to have fun! Some group instruction is provided by Coach Keir Lamont at the beginning of each session, followed by the students pairing up and playing each other. If you have any questions, please call or talk to Mr. Richard.

ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE

Ages 3 - 6 Monday and Thursday • 3:30 - 4:00 p.m.

Ms. Renee Brohamer

This studio is designed to help children whose primary language is other than English. We will work to develop vocabulary for express-ing oneself in different social and academic settings. We will work to develop fluency in the use of natural and accurate English lan-guage patterns through natural communica-tion situations. Activities will include art pro-jects, cooking projects, games etc. The class will be 30 minutes a day 2 times a week and is for children in preschool through Kindergar-ten.

VOCAL ENSEMBLE Ages first - eighth grade

If you’ve ever been in vocal ensemble or drama club, this studio is for you! This year we are offering a theatrical choir element as part of the vocal ensem-ble to build upon and showcase the many talents of our students. If you are a first-eighth grade student and can answer “yes” to any one of the follow-ing questions, you would love to be a part of the new Vocal Ensemble/Theatrical Choir.

Can you carry a tune? Can you move to a beat? Do you have dramatic expression?

SPOTLIGHT KIDS Sixth, Seventh & Eighth Grades

The Spotlight Kids Drama Club is offered to past and present students of Millhopper Montessori School under the direction of Sylvia Aslanian. You must be in Middle School to be considered as a member. We are an award winning competitive drama troupe. If you are interested in being a member of the Spotlight Kids 2011-2012 Season, please read below!

The drama troupe is also a member of the International Junior Thespian Society - Troupe# 88928.
