We all have role models in our lives, as they play a crucial role in our development and aspirations. Role models can be from various backgrounds ranging from politics through to teaching, yet all have a great responsibility towards society as they are always watched and admired. Sporting legends continue to be idolised as significant role models as they inspire the world and achieve success, yet not always without their own personal sacrifices.

Sporting LegendsNOTE:• This presentation was created with a broad range of online resources

ranging from newspaper articles through to social media. All resources have been deemed credible and reliable, as at 27 January 2014, due to supporting information and the authority of the websites visited.

Sachin Tendulkar's career started very early where he would be on

the field for up to 12 hours playing cricket at Shivaji Park,

Mumbai. He made his first international debut at the age of

16 against Pakistan in 1989. Sachin gave India his excellence for 24 years and played his last winning match in November

2013. (Tendulkar,S.2012).

Page 6: Sporting legends

Sachin Tendulkar is often called the modern day’s Don Bradman. This in itself is hisgreatest achievement which started in 1989 during his debut match against Pakistan. One of his remarkable achievements, amongst others, is his scoring of 2000 runs in the World Cup tournament and being awarded the most honorable Indian Civilian Award “Bharat Ratna”. (The Economic times,2011).

Like any other sports person, Sachin Tendulkar also had to go through the agony of pain and injury. His saga of injuries began from 1999 and continued well until his retirement. The year 2004 was when he had the severest injury of his career, “tennis elbow”, causing him to be out of action for six months. (Chidananda,S,2013).

Page 7: Sporting legends

Sachin Tendulkar may be called "Little Master“, but his heights of talent are unreachable. He is a role model for his fellow players and for many generations to come. He teaches values like equality and respect and advocates positive things through his work both on and off field. He also works within a NGO for orphaned children (Manallack,S.2013).

James Hird

Personal details:• Born in Canberra in 1973 as the oldest of

three siblings, Hird played various sports and activities during childhood. At the age of 17, he was selected by Essendon as the as the number 79 pick, during the national draft. (Wikipedia 2013)

• Despite retiring as a player in 2007, Hird continues to enjoy a long career with Essendon, although being currently suspended as its head coach (YouTube 2013).

(SportingPulse, 2014)

Page 9: Sporting legends

Injuries:• Hird suffered many injuries during

his career, causing him to miss nearly all of the 1991, 1997 and 1998 seasons. In 2002 Hird received a severe facial injury which required a weeks hospitalisation and several weeks of rehabilitation (Australianfootball 2013).

Achievements (Academic Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias 2014):• 1994: Won the first of five best and

fairest awards. • 1996: Awarded the Brownlow

Medal, the AFLs award for the league's best and fairest.

(Brain, 2012)

(Vietnamswans.com, 2014)

(Academic Dictionaries and Encyclopedias, 2014)

Page 10: Sporting legends

Contribution to society:• James Hird is one of the legends of AFL and

continues to inspire young Australians thanks to his achievements and determination to win. His desire to win unfortunately led to the 2013 Essendon supplements drug scandal however, in which many Essendon players were given performance enhancing drugs without consent (Wikipedia, 2013).

• It is likely that random drug testing and organisational governance will be increased across the AFL for future seasons. (3aw.com.au, 2014)

(the Guardian, 2013)

(Proszenko, 2013)
