Women’s size-specific tubinG

Our women’s frames target unique and/or

size-specific tubing for each frame size in both

alloy and carbon models. This ensures a

consistent ride quality throughout the size

range. By changing tube diameters and/or

customizing the carbon lay-up or alloy tubing,

we avoid smaller sizes that ride too harshly and

larger sizes where ride feel is too flexible. On

the right are five sizes of the Amira and the

various tube sizes.

When we reference contact points, we’re

talking women’s grips, women’s road bars,

size-specific flat bars, size-specific cranks and

(of course), women’s saddles. A well-fitting and

comfortable saddle addresses one of the most

100% of Specialized women’s bikes have a

unique women’s geometry. Within our women’s

bikes, every geometry differs based on rider

experience. For example, the Amira has

women’s performance geometry while the

Rumor has women’s XC trail 29 geometry.

Within this chapter, we’ve provided a

millimeter-by-millimeter guide of Ruby vs.

Roubaix; Rumor vs. Camber; and Vita vs.

Sirrus, so you can understand these differences

more visually. To summarize: the three most

important fit differences in our women’s bike

frames are stack, reach, and standover.

By keeping stack and standover low and the

reach short we can provide a better fit for a

majority of female riders.

What > Provides improved front suspension

performance at a value oriented price point. For

2015, this technology will be featured on all

Ariels as well as select models of Jynx and Jett.

Why > The custom tune gives the rider more

control over varying terrain. The fork

performance is smooth, consistent and

predictable; plus tunable via rider input at the

knobs.

How > With the help of our in house suspension

guru, Mike “Mick” McAndrews, we were able to

rework the internals of a stock, high value fork

for customized performance at lower price

points. Upon opening the fork, Mick realized

that there was only a single valve for the oil to

flow through. By creating a second valve he

was able to dramatically increase the

performance and ride quality of the fork.

How does this benefit the female rider > This

technology gives a first time mountain bike

buyer a dirt worthy bike with a fork that

performs at a high level, providing more

control, confidence and a great off-road

experience.

What > Revolutionary SBC technology,

manufactured by both Fox and RockShox,

which automatically sets the proper sag and air

pressure in your shock. Autosag can be found

on select models of Era and Rumor.

Why > Quick and simple adjustment that

guarantees the perfect setting for optimal

suspension performance.

How > First, the rider airs the shock to 300psi.

Next, while sitting in the saddle the rider pushes

the specially designed transfer port on the

shock to release air pressure. This equalizes

the positive and negative chambers and

achieves perfect sag.

How does this benefit the female rider >

While Autosag is not a women’s feature it can

be extremely beneficial to the female rider,

especially a newer rider. The idea of setting sag

can be overwhelming to any rider and the

ability to set it at the push of a button removes

a large barrier to entry to mountain riding.

Women’s suspension

What > Bikes and suspension designed from

the ground up as a system featuring custom

spring weights or rates (depending if the shock

is air or coil sprung) for a lighter rider. 100% of

Specialized women’s bikes with suspension

feature this custom-tuned suspension.

Why > Greater ease of using the full range of

the suspension by allowing a lighter rider to get

to the bottom of the stroke, which helps to

deliver a more capable trail bike. Female riders

that choose to ride traditional “men’s”

suspension are unable to use the full travel

because it isn’t specifically designed for their

average weights or ride style.

How > Extensive field testing and research on

women’s center of gravity and weight

distribution helps us to determine optimal

spring rates/ weights for female trail riders.

How does this benefit the female rider > By

working with our internal team and suspension

partners we are able to design the entire bike

as a system to achieve a balanced bike that is

optimized for lighter weight riders.

Women’s bike comparisons Technology

rumor Vs. camber

Our mountain bikes are a great way to educate

riders on women’s product differences:

standover is a visual feature, which riders can

see on the sales floor and feel immediately on

the trails. The Rumor also has a tighter

wheelbase and lower bottom bracket

compared to the Camber, because our rider

research shows that female trail riders want

improved handling.

ruby Vs. roubaiX

Ruby is a great example of a bike that’s

designed differently than its male counterpart

because of rider experience differences. For

men, the Roubaix is positioned as a race

platform. For women, our research shows that

this rider is not connected to racing, but wants

a premium and comfortable endurance

platform. This is why you see a taller headtube,

longer chainstays and a longer wheelbase in

the Ruby, to create more comfort and stability

for these riders.

Vita Vs. sirrus

We bring the same attention to detail to our

fitness products for men and women.

Additionally, with our flat bar bikes we can

measure whole-bike stack and reach because

we know the hand position and can measure to

the contact point (instead of just the frame

stack and reach).

Women’s helmets

Fun fact—from an anatomical standpoint, the

shape of men’s and women’s heads is the

same. We’re talking outside, not inside the

head—it’s very different in there!

With no anatomical differences, our men’s and

women’s helmets fit the same. However, in our

work to understand female rider needs, we

uncovered an important fit difference: the

female ponytail.

To fit a bulky chunk of hair and prevent it from

causing a cramped sweaty mess, we developed

the Hairport; our women’s ponytail fit system.

For 2015, 100% of our women’s helmets have

Hairport.

chamois

Specialized is one of the few brands that can

connect its equipment products and bike

products under one brand to target the rider

experience comprehensively. A great example

of this is our chamois, which are designed to

work as a system with our saddles. Our

women’s chamois are available in performance

and endurance designs, depending on

individual rider experience. Both designs have

the same three differentiating features, when

compared to our men’s chamois:

»Wider padding to accommodate a wider range of

sit bones.

»A narrower waist to accommodate for more

developed inner thighs.

»A center channel to reduce soft tissue pressure.

Frames and saddles represent the two greatest

areas of differentiation between men’s and

women’s products—perhaps for obvious reasons.

We’ve been designing Body Geometry women’s

saddles for over 10 years, developed through our

extensive scientific and medical testing with Dr.

Roger Minkow and the Boulder Center for

Sports Medicine. Starting in 2012, we began

working with Dr. Sonja Stilp, an orthopedic

surgeon and pain medicine specialist at Boulder

Orthopedics, who has also been an avid cyclist

for over 20 years.

Studies conducted with Dr. Stilp and

Dr. Minkow have included measuring nerve

sensation before and after a ride, and oxygen

flow while riding. All measurements target

different areas of women’s soft tissue, and use

different saddles (women’s cutout/channel and

no channel).

We also conducted a study to take actual

measurements of the female anatomy. With the

help of Dr. Stilp, we were able to successfully

measure a group of women. In women’s saddle

development, we are leading the industry!

All of these studies validate that soft tissue

pressure is a major cause of discomfort for

women, and the cutout/channel is the feature

that benefits women the most. This enables us to

find the best placement point for a women’s

cutout/channel.

There are three key differences in our women’s

saddles when compared to our competitors: An

hourglass center cutout, or central channel, that

follows the shape of female anatomy and relieves

soft tissue pressure; shaped wings and a narrow

nose to prevent inner thigh contact; and tuned

foam density and base so it flexes appropriately

for a lighter rider.

Technology

Body Geometry research shows that women

have lower anklebones and a lower point of

attachment for the Achilles tendon. Specialized

Women’s shoes are designed with a different

upper and lower collar height due to this

difference. Additionally, women have a

narrower heel, which is reflected in a narrower

heel cup in Specialized women’s cycling shoes.

GloVes

Women typically have smaller hands with lower

volume; so Specialized gloves are sized and fit

accordingly. The most important feature in

gloves is the Body Geometry pads that protect

the ulnar nerve. Pressure on this nerve can

cause hand numbness and pain if gloves are

not fitted properly.

sWat

SWAT stands for Storage Water Air Tools, and

is designed to provide a performance benefit

for the rider. Specialized has built an awesome,

under-the-kit, SWAT vest and shorts for

mountain biking. The women’s SWAT vest

includes relevant features such as a removable

built-in bra, in addition to women’s fit.

hook-up

For women wearing bibs, answering a call of

nature on the road or trail can result in some

awkward (and even indecent!) exposure. To fix

this, we’ve created a rear hook/clasp system

for easy on-and-off bibs. We call it The

Hook-Up: your bib with benefits.
