Major Benjamin Tallmadge’s Attack on Fort St. George in Mastic, NY

Wednesday, November 2 • 7:00pm • Program code: SAAMBT11Not many Long Islanders realize that one of the most daring and successful raids of the Revolutionary War happened right in our own backyard. In the early morning hours of November 23, 1780, 60 soldiers captured Fort St. George, a small stronghold on the Island’s South Shore, and burned 300 tons of forage in Coram on their way back to safety in Connecticut. All without the loss of a single man! Local Revolutionary War historian and re-enactor Bob Winowitch will present a discussion (in full uniform) of this bold endeavor and share his study of this little known battle.

Sagamore Hill: Theodore Roosevelt’s Summer White House

Monday, November 7 • 7:00pm • Program code: SAASH11No house better reflects the personality and interests of its owner than Theodore Roosevelt’s cherished Sagamore Hill. What began as the perfect getaway from unhealthy NYC summers in his grandfather’s day became the Summer White House during Roosevelt’s presidency. Roosevelt spent his final years happily at Sagamore Hill, and after his death in 1919, the Theodore Roosevelt Association and the National Park Service preserved the house. Historian Bill Bleyer will recount bygone days at Roosevelt’s haven, as revealed in his new book Sagamore Hill: Theodore Roosevelt’s Summer White House, featuring previously unpublished photographs and a

detailed guide to the house and grounds. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

In the Gallery Robert Silvering Images of South Africa, Botswana, and SwazilandRobert Silvering is a self-taught photographer and lifelong resident of Long Island with a love for capturing images that express the beauty and emotion of his subjects. His 2015 visit to South Africa, Botswana, and Swaziland gave him the opportunity to learn about their cultures and to experience the beauty of the people, animals, and landscapes. Safaris at dawn and dusk brought him within a few feet of the animals, leaving a lasting love and respect for them, and visiting schools and projects provided warm and friendly greetings from the local children and adults.
