FOREWORDPREC10US GEM, with a ‘10’ contained in within PREC10US, is Hall 10’s very own first newsletter to give recognition to graduating students for their commendable contribution to hall. These graduating students who are specially mentioned in this edition, had contributed extensively to the Sports, Recreational Games, and Cultural scene. To be able to appear in this newsletter, they must have displayed outstanding perfor-mance and are recognised by Hall 10 residents for their efforts. There are no better ways other than this modest publication to acknowledge these seniors. I hope you would take some time to read about their past contributions. It will surely change your perspective of hall activities.

I want to wish all the graduating seniors the best in your future endeavours. May the greatest moments you had in Hall 10 be with you always.

Esther TohPublications Secretary (Event Coverage)19th Junior Common Room Committee

“Great things can be accomplished through team work. We each have our own strengths, which is why we can achieve great things as a team.”

Jeffrey Toh See Ren Currently a year 4 MAE student, Jeffrey has been actively involved in a

number of sports and recreational games for Hall 10.

Games played: Darts, Othello, Softball and Sepak Takraw

Jeffrey has also contributed extensively to the Freshmen Orientation Camp as

- the best programmer and subsequently the Assistant Chief Programmer.

WHAT MADE JEFFREY JOIN HALL GAMES AND RECREATIONAL GAMES?

Jeffrey came into Hall 10 with an interest to try new things. As he did not attend the FOC as a freshmen,

Jeffrey sought to make new friends by participating in hall activities. Jeffrey also has a keen interest in the

recreational games and sports which he is involved in. For Jeffrey, most of the activities in Hall 10 were new

to him and he wanted to give himself a chance to try new things before he graduates. On top of that, he also

feels that as a member of Hall 10, he should contribute as much as he could through his involvement in hall

activities.

WHAT WERE JEFFREY’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Picking up new skills

-Working with friends

-Forming strong bonds with people

-Clinching the top 2 positions for softball for 2 consecutive years

-Bringing glory to the Darts team

WHAT HAS JEFFREY LEARNT FROM THE GAMES HE PLAYED?

After years of training and playing various games and sports, Jeffrey has no doubt learnt several skills and

insights. In the process of perfecting his knowledge and skills, Jeffrey has also learnt that there is no short-

cut to success; we must be willing to put in that extra effort to train. In addition, after representing Hall 10

in so many competitions, Jeffrey realised that one must be focused on the process and not be too obsessed

with just victory alone.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

As a resident who is actively involved in numerous roles, Jeffrey has learnt a lot from his experiences and is

happy to share his thoughts with the other residents. He feels that one should focus on a few games rather

than too many games because it is easier to commit to a few games than to have too many games to handle.

He feels that no matter what game or sport we play, the morale of the story is the same: “Great things can

be accomplished through team work. We each have our own strengths, which is why we can achieve great

things as a team”.

In training for whichever game or sports we are playing, Jeffrey encourages everyone to be passionate about

1

“The game isn’t over till the final whistle.”

Low Sock ChingLow Sock Ching, one of the hall’s esteemed players and resident of 4

years, claims playing sports to be a major passion of hers, which she

enjoys at a tender age. She is actively involved in both recreational

activities as well as sports. This served as an effective

balm to her childhood asthma and gradually grew into becoming a

major part of her non-academic life.

WHAT MADE SOCK CHING JOIN GAMES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Sock Ching always had the zeal in her to want to learn something new. This led her to be part of the soft-

ball and netball hall teams. She was encouraged by the former sports secretary Weilang to come out of her

academic-oriented shell and get involved more in hall games. Sock Ching realised that there was a serious

dearth of female players in almost all sports and really wanted to make an effort to change the scene.

WHAT WERE SOCK CHING’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Competing for and winning the position of Sports Secretary in the Hall Committee

-Overcoming laziness

-Learning to plan ahead and managing time well

WHAT HAS SOCK CHING LEARNT FROM THE GAMES SHE PLAYED?

Sock Ching has amassed great wealth in terms of bonding with co-players and learning lessons that would

help her a long way into the future. On a more game-specific note, she said she has learnt that facing the di-

rection of the ball is important during game play, and one also needs to be alert and watch out for stray balls

that might fling by at unexpected moments.

WHAT DOES SHE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

Sock advises all freshmen that a true sportsman’s qualities are identified when he holds the spirit of the

game above personal success. It may be idealistic and, when more people start to play, even unrealistic, but

it’s something a lot of competitive athletes forget as they get sucked into the heat of the moment (or sea-

son). Basically it is about having sportsmanship, respect for your teammates, your opponents, and the game

itself, and to remember that the game is not over till the final whistle.

2

what we do. If we are just going through motion, it will not do the team any good; we should be willing to

put in our efforts and train hard.

Lastly, Jeffrey understands that everyone has many other commitments. He feels that it is important to be

committed to the games or sports we play. However, we should never neglect our studies. He feels that

everyone has to find that balance between studies and hall activities as it is an important life skill to learn.

“Open your mind, let loose and have fun!”

Bernard Cokro Coming into Hall 10 with vast experience in a variety of sport, Bernard has

always been active in Hall 10’s sporting scene.

Games played: softball, soccer, sepak takraw and rugby. On top of that, he

was also the Sport secretary during his 2nd year in Hall 10. Bernard is cur-

rently a Year 3 NBS student and before he leaves Hall 10, he wishes to share

his thoughts on his journey as a sportsman in Hall 10.

WHAT MADE BERNARD JOIN GAMES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Sports has always been a passion of his, and with his experience in sports such as softball, Bernard wants to

contribute to the sports team of Hall 10. He feels that with team work and trainings, he can work with the

rest of the team to attain victory for Hall 10 in as many sports as possible.

WHAT WAS BERNARD’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT?

-Won medals for the softball team (first time in Hall 10’s history)

-To be able to train and improve together with his team mates

-Watched the softball team grew stronger

WHAT HAS BERNARD LEARNT FROM THE GAMES HE PLAYED?

Bernard feels that the most valuable thing he learnt was the importance of camaraderie, team work and

time management. In training to bring glory to Hall 10, Bernard learnt that camaraderie and team work is of

utmost importance and it should be cultivated in every team. As a student, time management is important

for him. Bernard feels that even with a heavy work load, we can still participate actively in Hall activities as

long as we learn to manage our time. Finally, Bernard also learnt that the team is as strong as the weakest

link.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

Keeping it short and simple, Bernard feels that university is a time to have fun, on top of studying hard. The

key to having a fulfilling university experience is to have fun in everything we do. Bernard urges all residents

to welcome this university and hall experience with a open mind and let loose to have fun. Bernard feels

that he has not regretted his active participation in Hall 10 because the journey has been meaningful to him.

He hopes that residents of Hall 10 would also have their own meaningful journeys.

“No matter what sport I am playing, the greatest thing to take home, is to help Hall 10 go further in the sporting arena.”

Muhammad Saiful Bin Sharom Whenever we hear “Saiful”, a slogan subconsciously filter through our

minds and shout out in bold “GRANDMASTER” inside our minds.

Yes, Saiful is a grandmaster when it comes to sports in the inter-hall

arena. Currently a Year 4 MSE student, Saiful has amassed a variety of

sports throughout his 4 years in Hall 10.

Games played: Softball, Sepak Takraw, Soccer, Volleyball, Track and Field

and Hockey.

WHAT MADE SAIFUL JOIN HALL GAMES AT FIRST?

Saiful has a keen interest in sports; he enjoys playing sports. Anything that involves a ball, you will see

Saiful involve in it as well. Being skilled in various sports before entering Hall 10, he sees it as a duty to teach

and guide friends who are new to the sport. With his sporting abilities, Saiful feels that he can contribute to

Hall 10 through Inter-hall games. On top of that, he has a passion to learn new sports which he never expe-

rienced in the past. But most importantly, Saiful values the team bonding among fellow hall players.

WHAT WERE SAIFUL’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Being able to coach and guide players

-Playing a part in helping Hall 10 go further in the sporting arena

WHAT HAS SAIFUL LEARNT FROM THE GAMES HE PLAYED?

Apart from learning new skills and techniques, Saiful is resolute when it comes to what he has learnt from

all the sports. Our grandmaster has learnt that teamwork and bonding is something that we should trea-

sure and value because it is not easy for a group of people to gel so well together in achieving the same goal.

Throughout the years, Saiful has sustained various injuries. And from these experiences, he has learnt how

to treat and manage them. For him, it was definitely an important skill that he has to master.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

He wishes to tell all hall players that when we join a sport, we should all enjoy playing and learning because

it not only improves team bonding and skills, it also forms great memories. The grandmaster also comment-

ed that Hall 10 is a very welcoming place, and new players will always be welcomed to learn new skills. He

urges all players to not be shy to join new sports. Finally, in closing, Saiful encourages more people to step

up and take on leadership roles. He feels that one should not be afraid to take the lead and it is always good

that we have skills and expertise to share with fellow players.

4

“Do not be afraid to try a new sport or game; we might discover hidden talents or even a new found passion.”

5

Kelvin Tay Yuan Jia

Kelvin Tay, or otherwise known as K.TAY to many residents in hall, is no

stranger when it comes to commitment for hall activities. As a year 4 stu-

dent in CBE, K.TAY spent a good 4 years as a resident of Hall 10.

Games played: Softball, soccer, sepak takraw, rugby and hockey, snooker

and cheerleading team. K.TAY has also taken up leadership roles like the

Chairperson of Freshmen Orientation Camp.

WHAT MADE KELVIN JOIN GAMES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

When K.TAY first entered Hall 10, he decided that as a resident he would contribute as much as he could.

His interest is in sports; hence he felt it was best to contribute through sports. On top of that, it was also

because he had a desire to win medals for Hall 10. He also cites learning new things as one of his reasons.

K.TAY feels that university is the best time to pick up new sports or games before we enter the working

world.

WHAT WERE KELVIN’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Winning a couple of medals for Hall 10 over his 4 years

-Winning the Softball gold medal in 2012

-Building great teamwork and team spirit to make a winning team

WHAT HAS KELVIN LEARNT FROM THE GAMES HE PLAYED?

With a vast experience in playing various sports and games, K.TAY has learnt that there is no hard or fast

rule to learning or mastering a sport. There can be very skilled players, but it takes team work and efforts by

everyone to produce results. One thing that he has learnt through this train of thought is that sport is more

than just a game or winning. K.TAY feels that apart from the element of fun, sport teaches people about life

such as our limitations (or height in K.TAY’s case), and how we can approach each day with greater aware-

ness.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

K.TAY encourages residents to not be afraid to try new games and sports. Even though we may not be the

sporty kind, do not be afraid to try a new sport or game; we might discover hidden talents or even a new

found passion. In closing, K.TAY wishes to convey that it is not always we get an opportunity to play, work

and live with people of the same goals in a common environment like Hall 10. Hence we should all take this

chance and make full use of it.

“Join Darts!”

Chen MinhuaOne recreational games player that Hall 10 would remember is no other than

Chen Minhua.

Games played: Darts, badminton

She also had various responsibilities in the Freshmen Orientation Camp Or-

ganising Committee.

WHAT MADE MINHUA JOIN GAMES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

When asked this question, Minhua replied that it was a coincidence that she ended up as a darts player for

the past 4 years. She did not have prior experience in darts, but in a twist of events, she ended up making

the team for darts. Before long, she was training and picking up the skills. In addition, Minhua feels that

darts is challenging, it was not like other games. She decided to take on the challenge and train her skills. As

she trained, her skills improved and it motivated her to not only want to learn the game, but also to contrib-

ute to Hall 10’s quest in recreational games.

WHAT WERE MINHUA’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Bagging a silver medal in her 2nd year

-Achieving most number of caps as a female player

-Achieving for Hall 10

WHAT HAS MINHUA LEARNT FROM THE GAMES SHE PLAYED?

In her years of training and competing together with her team mates, Minhua has learnt that in order to be

an outstanding darts player, one has to cultivate perseverance and concentration. To her, these are crucial

trainings that a darts player must undergo. Teamwork is also important. Minhua learnt that with team-

work, everyone will be able to improve and excel, and it make trainings much more fun. Finally, as with any

game or sports, Minhua feels that mindset and condition during play are important characteristics of a darts

player.

WHAT DOES SHE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

Minhua urges more residents to join darts. She feels that even if it is a new game, one should not be afraid

to try. She hopes that more people will be willing to play darts for Hall 10 and with the right training and

mindset, who knows, you might be an outstanding darts player. In closing, Minhua encourages residents to

join that they truly have a passion for and not for fame alone. We should be willing to contribute in what-

ever ways we can to Hall 10.

“Remember to flush the toilets after usage and be nice to the cats seen around and watch out for snails passing by.”

Lee Jer ShinLee Jer Shin has always been a keen enthusiast in the league of Hall 10’s

palette of cultural events and sports. He serves as an inspiration to incom-

ing players of the hall and has always been an asset to Hall 10. Jer Shin

harboured a flair for chess from the very beginning and was an active player

in the International Chess segment of the annual inter-hall games.

WHAT MADE JER SHIN JOIN GAMES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Jer Shin calmly replies that it was due to lack of any other activity that could satiate his interests. He re-

alised that participating in international chess served as a perfect vent to the geek in him that was seeking

an outlet to showcase his recreational prowess. It provided him a great deal of satisfaction and content –

feelings that arise only when one indulges in passion in an arena of their innate interests.

WHAT WERE JER SHIN’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Advancing to semi finals during the international chess game

-Along with his fellow mates Lawrence, Jack, Iryanto and Kumar, he learnt a great deal and although they

did not manage to clinch the top prize, it was the team effort and dedication that everyone put in that

meant a lot to him.

WHAT HAS JER SHIN LEARNT FROM THE GAMES HE PLAYED?

In the context of international chess, Jer Shin has learnt a hoard of valuable lessons. He quips that winning

does not always mean playing a fair game. It only implies making fewer mistakes than your one’s opponent.

Through repeated matches played against worthy opponents, he claims to have mastered tactics that shall

certainly guide him a long way down the line.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

As a note to the incoming residents of Hall 10, Jer Shin has a couple of pieces of simple advice to lend. He

believes that it is important to take active part in extra curricular activities to maintain a balanced and

mind, and incorporate a schedule incorporating a healthy work-life balance. On a more general note, he ush-

ers residents to maintain the sanitary levels of the hall by inculcating civic sense and remembering to flush

the toilets after usage. Moving to an eco-oriented perspective, he advises residents to be nice to the cats

seen around and watch out for snails passing by.

8

“Do not join because of points or titles, join for the sake of making friends for life, for learning new skills!”

Steve Lim Seng HeeSteve, has been a resident of Hall 10 for four years now.

Games played: Carom, darts, snooker, chinese chess and volleyball

He has held several leadership positions in sports and recreational teams

and has, in turn, learned to value the bonds he has with his team-mates and

hall mates.

WHAT MADE STEVE JOIN GAMES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

According to Steve, it was initially the love of sports and recreational games that lured him to join the

teams, and then later, it was the friendships he developed with other team members that kept him moti-

vated. Strong bonds, which can only be developed by intense training sessions as well as light fun session,

bind the players together. Everyone gets along, everyone helps each other out. That is why every member of

the group has a sense of belonging and purpose within the team. Steve asserts that benefits like getting hall

rooms the next year, and ECA titles on CVs are not important. Having memorable times with fellow team-

mates is important.

WHAT WERE STEVE’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-The sense of satisfaction he felt when, after long hours of training, he witnessed his mentored players pro-

gressed and performed to their potential

-Heartening for him to see people discovering their love for Carom which is a less well-known recreational

game

WHAT HAS STEVE LEARNT FROM THE GAMES HE PLAYED?

Steve has learnt the valuable lesson that bonds between people cannot be bought and they can only be

developed over time. The team members he has played alongside for four years are his friends for life. He

knows that they will stand by him through thick and thin, good times and bad. That is the magic of sports:

it does not matter if you are a senior or freshie, does not matter if you are in designing or engineering, does

not even matter if you are a new or old friend, if you are a team mate, you will stick by each other and have

the time of your life.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

Steve has one important tip to all future players who wish to join hall games: Do not join because of points

or titles, join for the sake of making friends for life, for learning new skills and above all, for having a fulfill-

ing and memorable university and hall experience.

9

“Crawl out of your comfort zone sooner or later to taste the meanders that life poses.”

Owen TanOwen Tan is all praise for hall activities when it comes to weighing their con-

tributions in one’s professional as personal lives. He started out as an inquisi-

tive freshman, seeking to learn more about Hall events and being a part of a

few activities that catered to his flairs. With raw beginnings from hosting the

mid-autumn festival back in 2009, he has grown into becoming one of the

hall’s most renowned contributors in the cultural scene.

WHAT MADE OWEN JOIN CULTURAL GROUP & GAMES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Owen began his journey of a four year long bond with the hall by hosting the mid-autumn festival in 2009,

which he describes as a priceless start. Following this, he went on to contribute heavily to the cultural seg-

ment of the hall’s events. His roles included both hosting and participating in events such as Jam Band, Hall

Production and a plethora of other events, which he says was a dream he had never even fathomed of before.

He did not just stop at cultural events. He also took active part in sports such as softball and swimming

with such passion that he calls his team of players as a ‘band of brothers’.

WHAT WERE OWEN’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Setting realistic challenges and striving to achieve them, living up to the motto “You Only Live Once!”

-Swimming for the frst time ever for Hall 10

-Taking the Hall Production’s performances from the levels of mere student productions to well-established

industry standards.

-Forging great, lasting friendships which he claims is one of his greatest achievements to date

WHAT HAS OWEN LEARNT FROM THE ACTIVITIES?

Owen has learnt to strike a cordial balance between professional work and personal development goals by

his indulgence in hall activities. Sheer dedication, hard work and well-built camaraderie earned by being a

part of the Hall committee taught him that setting challenges and exceeding them gives great satisfaction

to oneself. He has learnt that it is important to come out of one’s cove of comfort and take on new trysts to

bring out maximum underlying potential.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

Owen urges all freshies and undergraduates to crawl out of one’s comfort zone sooner or later to taste the

meanders that life poses – for it is navigating them successfully that lies true satisfaction. Mistakes will

bound to happen, but the lessons learnt at the end of the day value much more than petitie follies. With due

endurance shall come perfection.

10

“A shot at the Razers team would promise the best on-campus entertainment activities!”

Deborah LimDeborah Lim has been an integral part of Hall 10 and its activities from the

very beginning. As a fervent enthusiast of her school band since primary

school, she had amassed a rich slice of experience being a band member. It

was then that she decided she needed to see a change. This led to her en-

rolling and taking active part in a host of sports, track and field events, and

ultimately cheerleading.

WHAT MADE DEBORAH JOIN GAMES & CHEERLEADING IN THE

FIRST PLACE?

When Deborah sought to initiate the switch from a largely music-centered co-curricular portfolio to one

involving sports, she decided to try her hand at swimming, softball, hockey, track events and cheerleading.

She got herself enrolled in the Hall sports committee and Razers – Hall 10’s very own cheerleading team.

With much value to the committee, she watched herself grow from a member to the vice-captain in year

1 and subsequently to the stature of the captain in year 2. This is what she claims to be a dream she had

always dreamed of after three years of stay at Hall 10.

WHAT WERE DEBORAH’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Razers winning the interhall cheerleading championship – IHCC in 2012/13

-Winning medals from swimming at IHG

-Her experience with members of Hall 10 through participating in various activities

WHAT HAS DEBORAH LEARNT FROM THE GAMES SHE PLAYED?

Deborah has learnt several lessons from her tenure as a hall player. She has learnt that although prioritisa-

tion of academics above everything else is important, it is important to strike a balance between work and

sports. Joining sports, she says, has made her three years extremely fulfilling. Participating in sports at the

end of a tiring school day is sure to liven up even the most strenuous of days, she believes.

WHAT DOES SHE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

A holisitc university experience can be guaranteed only by striking the right chord of balance between

academics and sports. Actively indulging in both work and recreation is essential to keep the body and

mind awake and alike. Deborah advises all freshies to join a sport, recreational game or a cultural activity to

ensure a rewarding university experience. And certainly a shot at the Razers team would promise the best

on-campus entertainment activities.

11

“Hall 10’s very own cultural star!”

Heng Guo JieHeng Guo Jie is a talented dancer who has discovered and honed his skills

in the past 3 years as a resident of Hall 10. He has contributed his skills as

a dancer who performs various genres of dance, in particular hip-hop and

contemporary dance. Guo Jie has held various important leadership posi-

tions in hall committees like the Overseas Community Involvement pro-

grammes, hall drama shows, etc. A very talented and gifted performer, Guo

Jie is Hall 10’s very own cultural star.

WHAT MADE GUO JIE JOIN DANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Guo Jie’s reason for joining the dance group of Hall 10 was very simple and straightforward: he wanted

to experience how it would be to get involved with such cultural activities in hall. He looked forward to

learning a skill he had been unfamiliar with till then, and wished to enjoy the entire process. Guo Jie’s as-

serts that he is grateful for the guidance he received from his seniors and team-mates, that helped develop

his dance skills, so much so, that this gave him the incentive to continue with the activity every year. The

strong bonding with the team, and the thrill of participating in competitions together kept him interested

in the hall events.

WHAT WERE GUO JIE’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

-Guiding newcomers who wish to learn dance and perform for the hall and helps them pick up skills

-Building a great dance team, in terms of technique, appreciation for dance forms and passion for the art

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL PLAYERS?

Guo Jie wishes to give a very important message to all new joiners: It is essential to enjoy hall life. He be-

lieves that the hall of residence is the second home for a resident, it is his sanctuary away from home; There-

fore, it is crucial for a memorable and enjoyable university life, to participate in hall events and have a great

time. So if you are a new joiner, keep these pearls of wisdom in mind because involvement in hostel activi-

ties is the key for a healthy and fulfilling campus life.

12

“The man behind a great number of productions.”

William Paul OrchardOver the years, Hall 10 has numerous video and photo shoot productions. One

key mastermind behind these outstanding productions is no other than William

Paul Orchard. As an active resident in Hall 10, William has orchestrated numer-

ous projects that involved filming, editing, photographing etc. William is cur-

rently a year 4 ADM student. He has often provided his services for hall events

such as the Freshmen Orientation Camp (FOC).

WHAT MADE WILLIAM INVOLVED IN HALL PRODUCTIONS AT FIRST?

For William, it all started during his FOC 4 years ago. He made great friends during the camp and forged

a bond with them. It was through the motivation of his hall friends that William decided to contribute

as much as he could to Hall 10. As a major in film making, William felt that he could contribute to hall by

utilising his skills and knowledge in videography and photography. On top of that, it was through FOC

that William realised a video could capture memories better. And he sought to provide these long lasting

memories for residents of Hall 10.

WHAT WERE WILLIAM’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

In 2012, William was producing a video which was meant to be shown to the entire camp during the finale

event. It took him 4 days straight of non-stop videoing and photographing, and pulling an all-nighter the

day before the finale to edit the video. It was one of his toughest productions, and he was amazed yet glad

that he managed to produce a video which brought lasting memories to everyone who was involved in the

camp. Apart from producing videos and photos, William also commented that another achievement of his

was to make many great friends in Hall. He is very sure that these friendships will last forever even after

everyone has left Hall 10 or NTU.

WHAT HAD HE LEARNT FROM HIS EXPERIENCES IN HALL?

He has learnt that photos cannot capture memories as well as videos do. In a video, time does not come to

a standstill; it interacts and communicates with people who are watching it. William decided that it was

time to introduce something new for Hall 10. Hence, instead of just producing photographs, he directed

his efforts to producing videos as he feels it is the best way to bring the memories back to life for everyone.

William feels that there is something special about FOC. It is something that most people who are coming

in to hall would remember. Hence, William has always been involved in bringing these memories back to

the residents.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL RESIDENTS?

As a resident of Hall 10 for 4 years, William has amassed a great deal of experience about hall life and

university life. He wishes to convey to all residents that university is the time when we reboot our lives.

We can choose to start over anew because university is the start of a new life for everyone. He encourages

everyone to come in with a clean slate and use the experiences and memories of university and hall life to

add colours to our lives. It is up to us on how we want to create our journey thought university and Hall 10.

13

Along the way, we may uncover new talents and try new things, or even discover new passions in life. Wil-

liam feels that we can do whatever we want, but as long as we have the slightest of interest, we should not

be afraid to try; instead we should just go ahead and give it a shot. We only live once, and we can only have

this university and hall experience once, so we should never be afraid to open up and try new things; this

chance might never come again.

In closing, William urges all hall residents to live life to the fullest and collect as much memories as pos-

sible. He has collected many memories from hall life and hopes that every resident would find their own

happy memories of Hall 10 as well.

“Anything is possible as long as you work hard.”

James LuiIt has been 4 years now, since James first came to Hall 10. Having spent his uni-

versity life as a member of this hall of residence, James now finds himself with

a collection of wide varieties of hobbies and a full bag of experience. A passion-

ate member of the cheerleading squad and a vocalist in Hall 10’s own String ‘n

Strum, James has pursued and honed his talents with zeal and enthusiasm.

WHAT MADE JAMES JOIN CHEERLEADING IN THE FIRST PLACE?

James has an interesting story about his first tryst with Hall 10’s cheerleading. He joined the cheerleading

group in year one to actually help them out because they were short of members. Excited about trying out

something new, James had no idea what he was getting into. But the wonderful experience of learning a

new skill, developing a hobby and participating in memorable events left him with a new zeal for the activ-

ity and was the main reason he continued to pursue it in future years. Even today, James’ spirit and motiva-

tion has not changed: the incentive for him has been to not only help out the hall by contributing himself,

but also to train new members and help them develop their skills.

WHAT WERE JAMES’ BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

Quick trivia: Do you know who created the panther logo for hall 10? James did that when he was the public-

ity secretary in his second year.

-Hall 10 winning the championship title in IHCC 12/13

-Knowing when he spent countless nights of training and practicing eventually pay off, and that is the best

feeling in the world

WHAT HAS JAMES LEARNT FROM THE ACTIVITIES?

James cherishes the bonds and friendships he has developed with his teammates during their times togeth-

er. The biggest lesson he has learnt is to follow up on enthusiasm with hard work and painstaking effort. If

you have worked hard enough for something, you are destined to taste success. Also, it is important to get

pleasure from what you do: the purpose of participating in hall activities is to have fun and have an enjoy-

able as well as a memorable experience.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO SAY TO FUTURE HALL RESIDENTS?

James urges all freshers to pursue their passion and hone their talents instead of looking for Hall points or

guaranteed accommodation. He advices them to be enthusiastic about what activity they want to try out,

even if they have no prior experience in it. He speaks from experience when he asserts, that anything is pos-

sible as long as you work hard.
