Language learning vs. language acquisition• Language learning is a life long process

Language acquisition

• Acquiring a language through a subconscious process during which we are unaware of grammatical rules

• The natural way of acquiring mother tongue/native language

• Requires a source of natural communication

• Does not require extensive use of conscious grammatical rules and tedious drills

Language learning

• Direct instructional based conscious process of learning a new language

• Conscious knowledge of the new language and learners can talk about that knowledge

• form is of greater importance than communication

• objective is for the student to understand the structure and rules of the language through the application of intellect and logical deductive reasoning
