Silvia Barbone is an international expert in sustainable tourism with an extensive knowledge of the European tourism, cultural and social policies. She is the founder and the director of Jlag and FEST- Foundation for European Sustainable Tourism. She has worked as consultant and researcher for local and national governments in Europe and Mediterranean countries; she plans and manages small and large-scale tourism projects in partnership with Universities, enterprises, and public authorities. She is an experienced trainer in Project Management, Sustainable Tourism, and European Policies and Funding. She is the developer of the PM4SD™ (Project Management for European Sustainable Tourism) methodology and she has launched the European Summer School “Leadership and Governance for Sustainable Tourism” within the project “Training for European Sustainable Tourism”. She has also launched “Tourism Around Europe” a blog and a quarterly newsletter for competitive tourism in Europe.

Rachel McCaffery has over twenty years international experience in tourism and sustainability. She held Product and Commercial roles with Mytravel (now Thomas Cook) and Virgin Holidays becoming Head of Responsible Tourism for Virgin, during which time she worked closely with Sir Richard Branson and the Virgin Group and project managed the creation of the Virgin Holidays Branson Centre for Entrepreneurship, in The Caribbean. Rachel has managed a range of multi-stakeholder projects; from setting up a support system for crime victims in London, to establishing a community run eco-tourism facility for chimpanzee viewing in Uganda. She now works as Head of Sustainable Tourism for the INTASAVE-CARIBSAVE Group and was part of the consortia who helped develop, test and launch the EC’s European Tourism Indicator System (ETIS) last year. She has passed the Foundation level of PM4SD and also holds a Masters Degree in International Tourism Policy.

Over the last 4 years, Ms. Susana Conde has worked at Agrotravel Responsible Tourism, which she founded, specialised in Responsible and Sustainable Tourism, organising and marketing Responsible Tourism trips throughout the World, and as a destination agency in Spain. Agrotravel Responsible Tourism offers consultancy and training services on responsible and sustainable tourism, also providing innovative services to travellers, businesses and local authorities, in other fields related to Sustainability such as Carbon Footprints, CSR and Green Marketing. Agrotravel has become a benchmark in the world of Responsible Tourism and sustainability, advising many different organisations, companies in the sector and local organisations such as Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council.Susana Conde speaks at a variety of events and provides training on Planning and Management of Responsible Tourism, Ecological Footprints, Green Marketing, CSR in the Tourism Sector, Preparation and Marketing of Sustainable Products, etc.

Anne-Maria Mäkelä has been working in the field of sustainable tourism close to 20 years. She is specialized in sustainable tourism marketing and product development strategies. Her expertise areas cover policies, strategies, stakeholder approaches, management and master planning, project formulation, and poverty alleviation through tourism. She has been contracted by the UN World Tourism Organization, United Nations Development Programme, and the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) in developing countries such as Albania, Moldova, Egypt, China, Ghana, Mongolia, North Korea, Fareast Russia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Timor Leste, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Cambodia. At the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences she is managing and implementing EU-funded projects and assists various research groups in applying international funds for their projects. Ms. Mäkelä holds Masters’ Degree specialized in international marketing from the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration.

Tarja Keski-Mattinen is a senior lecturer at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. She has worked for 15 years as a teacher. Main subjects are related to Information technology, Website Development, Technical Communication and Project Management. She is also experienced in student counselling as well as business and industry – oriented projects implemented jointly with the students. She specializes in web-based learning, counselling and teaching, and undertakes R&D projects in these topics.

Eva Kiviranta is content planner of Visit Finland – marketing organization promoting Finland as a travel destination. She specializes in social media (especially Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) and public relations, on both operational and strategic levels. Her main topics revolve around bloggers, and how to combine social media, PR and websites to create synergy. Recently she has been involved with marketing successes of Visit Finland, such as Finngenerator and Nordic Bloggers’ Experience (NBE) and many more to come. Ms. Kiviranta has tons of hands on experience from the field and holds Bachelor’s degree in Communications and is soon to be a Master of Social Sciences from University of Helsinki.

Dr. Tapio Varmola holds a PhD in Education. He is the President of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences since the establishment of this higher education institution in 1992. Prior to his current position, he was a Training Director at the Institute for Extension Studies at the University of Tampere, Seinäjoki Unit. Dr. Varmola has extensive experience in educational administration, including The Rectors’ Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences and The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council. His research interests lie in the fields of adult and professional education, as well as educational policies. He has been awarded Honorary Professor of the University of Western Hungary, Sopron, in 2008 and he was a Fulbright Scholar in the University of Missouri, St. Louis, in autumn 2009.

Ulla Jussila works as managing director of South Ostrobothnia Tourist Service Ltd, that is a regional sales and marketing company of tourism, and serves also as Destination Management Company and Professional Congress Organizer (PCO) in Seinäjoki region. She has 35 years of experience of working in hospitality and tourism industry including management of sales in various hotels, marketing management, management of hotels and events. She has worked in hospitality industry in several regions of Finland, also in Lapland and in France and United Kingdom. She holds a professional degree in hospitality and tourism management. She worked as event manager in Tampere Hall congress and concert center in Tampere, when and where  the work for  sustainability started already 20 years ago as Tampere Hall was one of the first conference centers in the world to launch sustainability programs and policies.

Dr. Asko Peltola has held the position of Region Mayor since 2006. He has previously worked as a R&D Director at the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. Peltola was awarded a PhD (agric. econ.) in 2000 by the University of Helsinki. Peltola has also held several expert positions and positions of trust e.g. a member of the Rural Advisory Committee in The Commission of the European Union between 1998 and 2004. He is especially interested in rural development and rural policy issues. In addition to his position as Region Mayor Peltola also works for a more sustainable future by practicing organic cultivation at his own farm.

Dr. Harsh Varma is currently the Director of Technical Cooperation of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and one of the Principal Officers of the Organization which he joined in 1989. Prior to his current position, he was the Organization’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific and, Chief of the Asia-Pacific Section from 1989 to 2004. Holder of professional degrees in tourism from the United Kingdom and Austria and with over 38 years´ experience in the tourism industry, Dr. Varma has specialized in tourism planning and tourism marketing. He is responsible for implementing UNWTO technical assistance programmes and projects on a global basis, with activities currently on-going or recently completed worldwide. He is also responsible for executing all projects related to the UNWTO ST-EP (Sustainable Tourism – Eliminating Poverty) programme which is being implemented in 33 countries in different regions of the world, and its portfolio contains more than 100 projects.

Annelies Waegeman holds a Master degree in Applied Languages from the University of Ghent, Belgium. Her interest in travel brought her to the tourism sector where she gained experience in both the public and private tourism sector throughout Europe. She also completed a Master programme in Tourism with a strong focus on the field of sustainable development in tourism. As Project Manager at the European Travel Commission (ETC), she is currently leading projects on overall marketing within ETC, including strategic planning, e-marketing, branding, off- and online campaigns as well as Press and PR. As part of the Executive Unit, Annelies is responsible for ensuring that the project Destination Europe 2020 (a joint initiative with the European Commission), remains on track, financially & operationally.

Kelly Galaski holds a bachelor of commerce degree in hospitality and tourism management and a master in environmental studies in sustainable tourism development. She has over 15 years of hospitality and tourism industry experience, having worked in various positions in hotels, restaurants and travel companies. She has 7 years experience working in rural, underserved communities in Latin America and the Caribbean on developing community tourism plans, projects and initiatives, creating opportunities by connecting with the private sector. As Planeterra's program and operations manager for Latin America and assistant technical director of G Adventures' three-year technical cooperation project with the multilateral investment fund (MIF) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Kelly works with the Central and South America field managers and local partners to develop and manage projects in some of G Adventures' most important tourism destinations in the region.

Cinzia De Marzo is an italian lawyer, specialized in European Union Law and Economy. She has almost 20 years of experience as legal advisor on EU policies, mainly referred  to Structural Funds, cultural heritage and tourism policies, local development, working for public authorities (regional, local). She spent several years as expert on EU policies and project management, working on training activities addressed to post graduate students, which were organized by Universities, Research institutes and other educational organizations. Since 2012 she started to work at the European Commission, DG ENTR-Unit Tourism policies, as a national expert seconded, coming from the Italian Institute of Tourist Researches- ISNART- Unionamere.

Antonio Paolo Russo is tenured assistant professor at the Faculty of Tourism and Geography, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona. He is a member of the research group “Territorial Analysis and Tourism Studies” at the Department of Gerography of URV, and Research Director of the Science & Technology Park of Tourism and Leisure. Previous appointments were with the Erasmus University Rotterdam (where he received his Ph.D. in Economics in 2002), the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona and IULM University Milan. He is author of various publications in academic journals and books. His research interests range from tourism studies to cultural and urban economics. He has been involved as a staff member of university departments and as an independent expert advisor in various research projects in urban, regional, tourism and cultural economy and management, both in specific local issues and in EU research networks and other international programs.

Anne Matilainen, M.Sc (Forestry), works as a project manager/researcher in University of Helsinki, Ruralia Institute. She has over 10 years experience on research and development activities related to nature-based entrepreneurship in rural areas in national and international level. Especially she has focused on social sustainability of nature-based businesses and their business models. Her latest projects are focused on the co-operation between the land owners and nature based entrepreneurs, new forest-based value chains and wildlife tourism.
