Learning Objectives 1. Students will compose a reflective journal to demonstrate an understanding of the feelings of the young girl in “La casa en Mango Street,” and then use this understanding to develop a connection with a person of another culture.

2. Create an artistic rendering of the description of the house presented in “La casa en Mango Street” to show an understanding of the detail and feelings of the young girl in the story toward her new house.

3. Students will explore the word “empathy” and apply that to their understanding of the young girl in the story.

4. Students will be exposed to literature written from the perspective of “the other” with the intention of creating a sense of empathy and understanding of cultures.

Procedure 1. The teacher will begin by explaining to students that we will begin reading Sandra Cisneros novel, “La casa en Mango Street.” Warm-up: The teacher shows students photos of Mexican Americans. For each photo students are asked to write down their first impression of the person. (4 minutes) I will also ask students questions about the individuals in the photos.

2. The teacher will then discuss students’ reactions and them true background stories of each of the people in the photos. (4 minutes)

3. Students will receive handouts of the story “La casa en Mango Street.” They would also receive art materials-and markers (8 minutes). We will read the first story of the house on Mango Street together in class.

4. After reading the story students will be asked to draw their own visualization of “La casa en Mango Street.” (7 minutes)

5. Discussion of the story and/ student reactions (3 minutes)

6. Assign/Explain Homework (2 minutes)

Assessment/Evaluation The Assessment:The assignments are worth 80 points total.Photo Notes: 10 pointsReflective Piece: 25 PointsArtistic rendering: 25 pointsClass participation 20 points

Closure I will pass out the homework assignment: Students will be given a writing assignment in which they reflect on the girl’s situation in the “La casa en Mango Street.” Can they relate to her feelings? Students will also be asked to read the next story titled, Pelos.

Accommodations/ Support Staff The teacher will be walking around to assist students when they are drawing their interpretation.

Resources or Materials -Computer with Microsoft PowerPoint installed.-Slides of photos of Mexican Americans.-Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango street novel.- Markers, crayons and colored pencils.- Copies of the first chapter of the La casa en Mango Street in the targeted language.
