Barbara Spirouli’s initial idea, which I had comment-ed on in an extensive analysis in 1996, was the adjustment of a selected system on the individual situations to which it could be connected. The adjust-ment was the principle idea. It was the wire grids of the selected and every time different structure that had the quality of assuming and impersonating the new situations in relation to which they functioned. In practice, this was the selection of a system capa-ble of adjusting to different conditions and in which the main juxtaposition related to two coordinates: the generality of the system capable of adjusting to the different, every time, situations of each space and the specificity of the situations, the locality of the situations, to specify, every time, the generality of the multiple functions of the system. This idea fol-lowed her throughout her life as a rule of behaviour or as the regulator of her work and meant that the function of the artist is to claim the adjustment of the idea in an regime of specific situations as the precondition for the idea to become form but also for the idea to be identifiable in its every application. The transparency Spirouli pursued was represented in the form of grids which, in essence, were empty organisational structures and constituted the sug-gestion of the other than themselves to which they referred, as being capable of supplementing them – of filling them in a sense, with an image, with the reason for their installation. The grids were the sug-gestions of the transitions to that which they were not but were also the reason for which they were made.

Page 3: spaces of places/χώροι των τόπων

In practice, Barbara Spirouli constructed a system which follows her in every one of her works and ac-cording to which the vacant is represented as the structure and as the form of space and signals space. This is the absence she herself intended in her works and about which she later spoke to me in 2006, [...] the passage is to depart from the ma-terial and move towards something immaterial. […] [...] The interest is in the materiality that isn’t, […]. These observations, in Barbara’s work, relate to the concept that the artist made the juxtaposition be-tween colour which she characterised as the mate-rial of the work and the planning of the organisation of the colour from the drawing which she used as a web, - literally, as the web of the material. The web organised the material and allocated it in the space: […] Colour referred me to materiality and is not the same as the drawing – the drawing referred me to the space […]. The interesting thing about this work is that the use of the drawing as allocation of the material in space ultimately replaced the material and incorporated it minimally so that the drawings in space became a material web, - structures of fine wires: […] They were wall-mounted, wire construc-tions that functioned flatly but it was obvious that as they opened they simultaneously functioned in space. I had the intuition that one cannot conceive flatness, work with flatness without space. It is not exactly a two-dimensional frame. […]. This was the first outcome of her work; that she brought the vari-able drawing with its own qualities to space i.e. con-taining interruptions, raptures. The juxtaposition of drawings with the drawings in its interior, connect-ing, in a complex way, its various parts. The questions however that occurred in 2006, in the next stage after the 1996 exhibition, were that even when the drawings had already been altered into grid structures that functioned without refer-ences to an initial painted surface of origin and only

in relation to their inner connections and the visual recognition of the voids between them – it was their shared interior space that continued to function in relation to the grids themselves: it is the space that essentially surrounds the interior space of the grids because the grids are not nowhere, but are always there, somewhere, in a specific geography, outdoors, in a room, in a public architectural envi-ronment. They function in a space. Also, the move away from the vertical surface (the origin, in Bar-bara Spirouli from the painted work, from the wall), does not release from the source because any ge-ography presupposes the horizontal surface – the support of the ground, equally to the vertical sur-face. Barbara’s solution was suspension: this was the logical conclusion of the reasoning of the grids without wall and without ground –without belonging to a wall and without being supported on a ground – as structures that define the before and the after of their own space, in front of and behind the grids, thanks to the movements of different engagements and reverse directions that would attempt, between two approaches of the empty grid from in front of and behind the grid to define a dividing empty space of the space: the dividing empty space of the space and suspension define and – according to Spirouli’s own definition, locate – a locus and here the artist refers to an expression used by Heidegger in relation to locality. She means that the empty grid as the di-viding empty space of the space, locates a locus to-wards which incline all directions, all engagements, gazes, movements as a specific reference and as the function of generality, of the general empty space and the specific localised space. The thoughts and questions that concerned her were to what extent the generality of the general empty space could be implied without its specific reference to an also specific locus which, in practice, was the empty suspended grids that defined it. The return to the location of the specific toward which the gazes

turn and focus as the reference point of the gen-eral space was the revelation, for the artist herself, of the need to rethink her initial intuition that the empty spaces of the grids could form the refer-ence to an absence or could mean an absence. On the contrary, absence was already there, present, located as the specific absence in the interior of the general space, with the only difference that al-though it was its own stable reference point, it did not have a reference – it was the suspended, bridge of the references of the others and of the secure-ment, of the perforation of the transition from the before to the after, and vice versa, without the sus-pended fixed crossing point having its own refer-ences, having excluded the vertical surface and the ground. Here, Barbara made her reverse restart, i.e. she returned to the located, perforated space. The idea was to ascribe it its reference and that which it had been deprived of, the wall and the ground, no longer as references to something out-side the grids but so that the references were inter-nal, within the space of the grids: the work embod-ied in itself its juxtaposition with suspension, the motive, the reason of its creation, but, this time, suspension as stable origin. The wooden, solid sur-faces that intervened and run through the grids, the intensities they provoked with their diagonal installations, was the counterbalance of the solidity of the origins, of the wall and the ground, of the stability they were missing, with its new internal supports as the guarantors of the autonomy of the work and as the reason of the concept it had, to be the specific and adequate in itself simple represen-tation of its reasoning. Barbara led her reasoning to its consequence, the work to describe with ma-terial images the way she thinks. In a succession of the development of the logic of this work which functions both as motive and as result – as the external reference and as the internal replacement – Barbara has formulated the preconditions for an

analytical work whose strictness of thought has the tendency to increasingly become the reason, the requisite of the way it functions.

“Shell” 2015Shell (or Husk) represents the concept of a sculpture whose geom-etricity is fluid and tends to alter, every time, according to its inner tensions and forces. These tensions are not predicted but can be re-corded by the artist in hindsight retrospectively, forming its potential biography. The biography is the work. In a series of possible move-ments of space upwards, downwards and chronologically towards the past, the artist is in a position to mix the continuous expansions in space, inward and outward, to each material work, with the cor-responding references to the conceivable times that accompanied it, as the ultimate pursuit of a third, always, work - but then, only contingent, heralded.
