The abstract geometric designs are inspired by nature

Composed of clear & coloured glass, these ‘light screens’ provide interest & privacy to the house dwellers

Adds light to the room which reflects effectively off the white painted walls

Colours are echoed in the glass inserts on the high backed chairs.

High backed chairs give the occupants some privacy as they chat over tea.

• Most of my work has been commissioned.I am asked to produce designs for a specific location, project, theme and usually within an agreed budget and time schedule. Not all artists make good commissioned artists or can respond to the discipline. It suits me. I have found that being commissioned sends me into areas of study into which I would not have expected to venture. I find often that I have to study intensively and read extensively before the actual design process can begin.A good example of this was for the

• Queens' Park Synagogue Project >>• I was asked to design 20 windows on the

theme of the Jewish Festivals. I had only heard of 2 of them.It took at least 6 months before I was really able to begin designing but by the end of the project, 3 years later, I was invited to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem to talk about the making and the symbolism of the project.

• This has always been one of my favourite windows partly because of the location and partly since I was given such a free hand in designing what I considered appropriate. The cafe has a special atmosphere with an underlying sense of humour. There is a quality in all aspects of the cafe including the furniture by Tim Stead which is highly original

and beautifully made. • glasspainter.com

BEIRUIT HOSTAGE WINDOWS 1993window of captivity, window of freedom

Broxted Parish Church, EssexThe imagery derives from; newspaper reports, discussions with the church committee in Broxted and two interviews with John McCarthy and Jill Morrell. When first contacted about this commission, I considered only the plight of the hostages but after speaking with John McCarthy and Jill Morrell, I realised that this would be wrong. The friends and the families of all the hostages were, in many ways, also in captivity. The Captivity Window contains symbolism related to events both in Beiruit and in Britainglasspainter.com

LEADLINE STUDIO Shona McInnesLEADLINE STUDIO Shona McInnes

• I studied stained glass design at Glasgow School of Art in the

1980's. After graduating I worked for two years as a designer and college lecturer before setting up the ‘Leadline Studio’ where I have continued to work in stained glass for over twenty years.

• I specialise in site-specific architectural glass for a wide range of locations, from universities to hospitals and from new chapels to listed buildings.

• I also work extensively on new commissions for churches, where I enjoy interpreting traditional themes in a contemporary way. I regularly undertake commissions in private houses, but nowadays rarely do restoration work, preferring to develop my own ideas.

• The Essential Spirit

• The Glenlivet Distillery, Morayshire; 1997

• 0.64m x 2.1m

• This contemporary backlit panel is the focal point in a screen at the entrance to the new distillery visitor centre. The design of the glass was inspired by the landscape of Glenlivet, suggesting that from this rough landscape of rock, moorland and icy water is born a smooth, warm spirit whose characteristics are reflected in the smoky, spicy and golden colours which flow towards the top of the panel.

• Winter Window• Private residence, Rotherham• 2005 – 0.3m x 0.9m• This panel on the theme of ‘winter’ is

in a ground floor WC. To maintain privacy, careful use of textured glass is employed in the lower half of the panel which is made with ‘obscure’ glass whose sparkling textures suggest ice crystals and snow. Colours from the winter landscape such as icy blues, steely greys and beiges compliment the stone and glass tiles in the window recess, and fill the room with a soft ambient light.

• ‘Overlay’ is an anodised aluminium screen with an optical lens engineered into its structure.

• The screen creates a decorative open wall at the edge of a mezzanine in a domestic interior in the Barbican complex, London.

• There were no restrictions in material or concept.

• The design presented itself in my studio via already existing works lying in a pile of overlapping intertwined metal parts. A drawing inspired by the random chaos of these curved & formal lines was precisely transferred to computer.

• The small original pencil drawing was eventually transformed becoming a huge metal drawing in space.

JOHN CREED ~ Kelvingrove Gates

• Entrance Gates:KELVINGROVE ART GALLERYGlasgow

• A public art commission. The design demanded a bold approach to complement the architecture and the imposing red brick and sandstone. The confined space where the gates are situated led to an inter-mediate hinge being introduced which also enabled the gates be partially closed, leaving one central entry point for private functions. Material: Stainless steel. Date: 2006
