It was a glorious day in Weatherford... Twenty four people gathered in Weatherford on November 7 to sample the visual treats of Mary Martin's home town. Some stayed at the La Quinta Inn and others in the Angel's Nest B&B on a hill on the edge of town. Friday night we scattered to several local restaurants sampling everything from barbecue and steak to fried catfish and chicken-fried steak with free beer. Saturday dawned clear and crisp. Most of us went to Chandor Gardens and were greeted with autumn foliage and a deep blue sky. We painted fountains, waterfalls, garden arches, fall flowers, Chinese dragon dogs and a footbridge arching over a running stream filled with koi. Other of us painted at the farmer's market, the old train station, or one of the many historic homes in town. That evening we gathered at Skinny's, a BYOB hamburger joint, where we taped our paintings to the front window and held an impromptu art show complete with a "blue" ribbon for Priscilla Krejci's plein air masterpiece of the Weatherford court-

Dear Friends . . .

What a great fall SWS has had! Three wonder-ful workshops – with Ratindra Das, Louise Cadillac and Stephen Quiller; an annual exhibi-tion as good as any; a terrific paint-out in Weatherford in early November; and finally a

standing-room-only meeting with Steve Quiller demonstrating. Members seem to be enjoying meetings in our new space at LLUMC, with our improved sound system. And there’s more to come.

Our annual Holiday Party will be on Sunday, December 7, at 3 PM. We’ll meet at Artists’ Showplace (southwest corner of Coit and Arapaho) and have a gift exchange of paintings. Please bring one of your paintings – not framed, but matted to not exceed 11” x 16” – and gift wrapped. Also bring some nibbles or a bottle of wine to share. We will have a lot great door prizes from suppliers, teachers and artists.

If you have designs on one of our workshops, get your reser-vations in early. Our workshop schedule is set through 2010 and many of those events already have a healthy list of re-served spots. A few are already full.

We’ve ordered SWS caps, aprons and tee-shirts. Many mem-bers reserved items at our November meeting. Send me an e-mail if you want to order.

Finally, our January meeting occurs in a month where we don’t have a workshop scheduled, hence no visiting demo artist. But we do have a special surprise planned. It’ll be fun, educa-tional and a meeting to remember. Don’t miss it.

Have a meaningful holiday season,

Herb

Get Your SWS Gear SWS tee shirts, caps and aprons are in production. While many members placed orders items at our November meeting, plenty are left (so far). Here are the details: Caps: $10 each, khaki with name and SWS logo on the front and web address on the back. Tee Shirts: $10 each, navy blue with the name and logo on the front and web address on the back. Sizes: small, medium, large and extra-large. Aprons: $12 each, navy blue with name and logo on the front. E-mail Herb Reed at [email protected] to order your gear. Plan to pay with check (to SWS) or cash at our January meeting.

SRO Crowd Dazzled by Stephen Quiller Demo One of the largest crowds in SWS history crowded into the LLUMC for Stephen Quiller’s amazing wa-tercolor demonstration at the November meeting. He prefaced his painting with a brief explanation of his patentened color wheel and palette. The painting was a somewhat representational landscape of the Colorado area in which he lives. But it took on the Quiller style that resulted in a masterful painting. After the break he presented a slide show of his works that was eagerly received by the audience. Patti Bowler reported that the 25+ participants at the workshop were challenged and gratified that they had signed up for his workshop.

DVD Project We plan to have instructional DVDs available to members of borrow for a month (no charge). But we have very few DVDs. If you have one or more DVDs that you’ve watched and would like to share, bring them to the next meeting. Mary Truelove and Jay Conrad head up this project.

SWS ARBORETUM ART NEWS The third annual Fall Artscape was a huge success with seventy artists exhibiting. It was so successful that we are planning a spring Artscape for Mar 21and 22, 2009. SWS Painters were painting on the grounds during Artscape. The plien air artists were Cecy Turner, Florence Mullin, John Go-forth, Tom Wellman, Margaret Bailey, Pat Fekete, and Betsy Johnson, who was also exhibiting at Artscape. SWS artists that participated in the Garden Gallery were: Marga-ret Bailey, Jodie Baldwin, Michael Borne, Sharon Giles, John Goforth, Babs Light, Ramona Murphy, Carol Scott, Jeff Good and Sandra Reese. A total of thirty two artists partici-pated. 84 paintings were entered, 54 paintings were selected by our juror Patricia Meadows to hang in the gallery. The Garden Gallery exhibit displayed the artist’s works in the historic DeGoyler home all month. IN MEMORIAM Laura Minna Potter, 83, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. She had suffered a heart attack and apparently never recovered. Laura was a long time member of Farmers Branch Carrollton Art Association. She loved painting, sculpture, and experimenting. She took many art classes thru Brookhaven and was always willing to explore new things. She especially loved watercolor. She was workshop chairman for a couple of years for SWS several years ago. She was also a signature member of SWS. Her husband, Delbert, said there would be no service as Laura did not want a fuss. See Dallas Morning News obits Friday, Nov 21, 2008
