From page 1“The present courthouse,

which opened in 1991, has itsown District Court officewhich operates with the courtas well as processing war-rants, fines, penalties, main-tenance payments, stampduty, and enquiries.

“As a result real efficien-cies are achieved in thisprocess and the cost of run-ning the same, circae38,000, is minuscule interms of overall budget andcourt comparisons.”

In a statement the CourtsService said the changes they

were proposing were a “oncein a generation opportunity”to improve the organisationand delivery of District Courtbusiness in Dublin.

“Our staff are currentlystretched to the limit to meetand maintain existing servicelevels, and at the same timemeet increasing demand,”the statement reads.

“Consequently we mustconsider restructuring, reor-ganisation and prioritisationto ensure that a fully func-tioning court administration isin place for the people ofDublin.

“While it is fully acceptedthat the closure of any courtoffice or venue whether inDublin or elsewhere will in-evitably cause inconven-ience for some, theseproposals will result in im-proved services for courtusers in offices and court-rooms which are fit for pur-pose, have facilities andsupport services that cannotbe provided at suburbanvenues, and enable peopleto conduct their businesswith dignity and privacy.”

The statement adds: “It isimportant that anything we

do should not unduly impacton access to the courts.

“With no change, we willhave to cut back services, ourability to service court sittingswill inevitably be affected, and there will be consequen-tial increased waiting times.

“If we do not reorganisethere will inevitably be dis-ruption to and cancellation ofcourt sittings. Extensive con-sultation with all involved isplanned and all submissionsreceived will be given fullconsideration both by theBuilding Committee and theBoard.”

Critics' reaction to Mrs Brown movie is hilariousTony McCullagh

MIND-NUMBINGLY boring, off-the-wall, totally hilariousand outrageously vulgar. But enough about some of thereviews that have greeted the release of 'Mrs Brown's BoysD'Movie'.

If you don't find the antics ofthe matriarchal Finglas streettrader funny, you can guaranteeyourself a good laugh by

Googling a selection of the seri-ous critics' reaction to BrendanO'Carroll's first big screen outing. Some of them can be very

grumpy, precious individuals, tosay the least. It's hard to knowwhat bothers them most: thecommercial success of the MrsBrown franchise or the lack ofsubtitles in the film.

They might have preferred itif the movie was three hourslong and set in a monastery inTibet. Naturally, it would have tobe filmed in a single sequenceon a handheld camera with theactors eschewing a script infavour of some self-indulgentimprovisation. You can almostpredict the plaudits coming offthe pages - 'brave', 'ground-breaking', 'exceptional', 'chal-lenging'.

KNOCKERSThe point that many critics

miss is that 'Mrs Brown's Boys'is not art for art's sake. It's noteven art. It's old fashioned en-tertainment and does exactlywhat it says on the tin. The sex-ual references and bad lan-guage have certainly polarisedopinion. But taste is a subjectivething and millions of peoplearound the globe love MrsBrown and her on-screen family. She certainly has her knockers(fnar fnar!) but TV viewing fig-ures consistently show them tobe very much in the minority.

Brendan O'Carroll is no fanof the critics as he believesmany of them have been un-kind to him since his early days.He has been at pains to point

out that he writes for his fans, not the reviewers. But even O'Carroll must have been takenaback (and hopefully amused)by some of the brickbats flungat Mrs Brown's first big screenventure. Frankly, suggestionsthat the film is racist, sexist andhomophobic are pretty wide ofthe mark. Criticising the vulgar-ity of a film featuring Mrs

Brown is like saying you wereshocked by the level of violencein a Bruce Lee movie.

There's a scene in the clas-sic American comedy 'Seinfeld'where the hapless GeorgeCostanza tries to chat up awoman by telling her he's awriter. She seems initially im-pressed until he discloses thathe's writing a sitcom, at which

point she laughs with derisionat what she perceives to besuch a low art form. It re-minded me of some of the crit-ics' reaction to BrendanO'Carroll's work.

So while 'Mrs Brown's BoysD'Movie' will not be to every-one's taste, it's already a boxoffice sensation here and islikely to propel O'Carroll and his

team to even greater heights ofsuccess. Quite rightly, he will bemore focused on his core audi-ence's reaction to the film thanthe elitist, snobby views ofsome of the begrudgers. Heshould make a sequel, just toannoy them.*You can read all the DublinPeople blogs at dublinpeople.blogspot.ie

“An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for thenew school building in April of this year after receiving objec-tions against the council’s decision to grant permission, and Icommend the Department of Education for acting quickly toget the contract signed.”

Deputy Mitchell added that a huge increase in numbersnearing school going age had placed real urgency on the build-ing of additional schools and classroom space.

Tributes paid to a giant of Irish politics Neil Fetherston

TRIBUTES have been paid to the outgoing Minis-ter for Education, Ruairí Quinn, who announcedhis resignation last week.

Minister Quinn said hewould resign from Cabinet inthe upcoming reshuffle.

Mr Quinn has also an-nounced his intention to retirefrom politics at the next general

election.Minister of State at the De-

partment of Health, DeputyAlex White, paid tribute to Min-ister Quinn as he announced hisintention to step down from

Cabinet on the day of thereshuffle.

“I want to pay tribute to Ru-airí for his work as Minister forEducation and Skills in this Gov-ernment,” Deputy White said.“He has been a champion of re-form and has fought success-fully for investment in edu -cation in difficult times.

“Ruairí has had a long andillustrious ministerial career.History will look favourably onhim during his time not only asMinister for Education and Skills, but also during his periods asMinister in the Departments ofFinance, Enterprise and Employ-ment, Public Service andLabour.”

He added: “Whether puttingour nation’s finances on asteady footing in the 1990s,leading the fight against organ-ised crime with the establish-ment of the Criminal AssetsBureau, leading a school build-ings programme during ourcountry’s worst financial crisis orbuilding a more tolerant societythrough progressive legislation,Ruairí has always served for thecommon good rather than forshort-term political gain.”

Deputy Kevin Hum p -hreys said Minister Quinn, agiant of Irish politics, will bemissed.

“I wish my colleague, friendand running mate, Ruairí Quinn,

the best of luck following hisdecision to step down from theCabinet on the day of the pend-ing Cabinet reshuffle, and not toseek re-election at the end ofthis Dáil,” he said.

“As a giant of Irish politicshe will be missed, but I look for-ward to working with him forthe next 18 months or so of thisDáil in the interests of our con-stituents and country.

“After 40 years in politics,he has been an outstandingcouncillor, Senator, TD and min-ister.

“He has served with distinc-tion across a range of depart-ments, always bringing areforming zeal to the work ofgovernment.

“As leader of our party, hefocused on social democraticpolicies that in hindsight wouldhave done much to solve theproblems thrown up by theCeltic Tiger and economiccrash.”

The Irish Second-Level Stu-dents' Union said MinisterQuinn had pioneered manyvital and student-focused re-forms to the education system.

“These were hugely impor-tant in improving the quality ofIrish education and for this, theISSU is very grateful,” the unionstated.

“Minister Quinn has had astrong working relationship

with the ISSU for a number ofyears both as a minister, andas an opposition spokespersonbefore this.

“Minister Quinn was verysupportive of the importanceof a student voice in second-level education, and much of

the progress the ISSU hasmade in recent years wouldnot have been possible with-out his support.”

Southside marks centenary of Great WarNeil Fetherston

A MAJOR new exhibition has been launched on the Southsideto commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I.

The cathaoirleach of DúnLaoghaire Rathdown CountyCouncil, Cllr Marie Baker, re-cently marked the start of thecouncil’s sixth Summer of Her-itage Programme by openingthe ‘DLR and the Great War’ ex-hibition.

Produced by the council’sHeritage Office and the authorof ‘Out of the Dark’, Ken Kin-sella, the launch took place twodays before the centenary ofthe assassination of ArchdukeFerdinand in Sarajevo, the eventthat led to the outbreak of theGreat War.

Cllr Baker said the 1914-

1918 conflict was a subject thathas been to the background ofIrish life despite the large-scaleinvolvement of people from Ire-land.

“Shortly after the warended the political landscape ofthe country changed and thosehundreds of thousands whofought in British uniforms weresuddenly cast on the wrongside,” she said. “In recent years, particularly with Queen Eliza-beth II's visit to the war memo-rial gardens and the centenaryof the outbreak of the war, ithas come to the fore.”

Also speaking at the launchwere RTE’s Myles Dungan, whohighlighted the growing inter-est in the Great War and authorKen Kinsella, who spent 13years detailing the lives of thewar dead from the Southside.

The Dún Laoghaire Rath-down area is intimately associ-ated with one of the bloodiestwars in the history of mankind.

The Great War, while it hasnot loomed large in the con-sciousness of many people inIreland since independence, was one of the key events thatshaped the modern world.

Many of the stories in the

exhibition are harrowing andmanage to convey the brutalityand futility of the mass killings.

In addition to the exhibitionand the book there will be aconcert of Great War songs onJuly 16 and an afternoon oftalks on July 26 that will featureMyles Dungan.

For information on all thecouncil’s Summer of Heritageevents, see www.dlrevents.ie

Ken Kinsella’s Out of theDark 1914-1918 was publishedto examine the huge contribu-tion and sacrifice made bySouthsiders during the conflict –against a backdrop of an in-creasingly volatile and uncer-tain political climate at home inIreland.

Over 13 years in prepara-tion, research and writing, thebook is an important addition tothe growing scholarship and ac-knowledgement of this aspectof local and Irish national his-tory.

This fascinating and poig -nant history highlights the ter-rible losses inflicted due toIreland’s involvement in thewar, and the grief and pride ofthe Southside families they leftbehind.

Lifeboat rescues‘paraglider’ in difficultyAFTER a series of 999 emergency calls reporting an object crashing into the sea off Bray,Co Wicklow, the volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew from Dun Laoghaire raced to the scenewhere they rescued a giant Mickey Mouse balloon.

Several callers to the Irish Coast Guard co-ordination centre in Dublin had reported seeingan object landing in the water 1,000 metres offthe Bray seafront.

Several paragliders had been operating inthe area and there were fears that one of themmight have got into difficulty.

Arriving on scene, the All-Weather lifeboatcrew of seven recovered a large inflatableMickey Mouse balloon that was being carried

by the light breeze and flood tide towards thecliffs at Shan ganagh.

“We're happy that this was a call made withgood intent and calling 999 and asking forCoast Rescue is always the best course of ac-tion," said Stephen Wynne, lifeboat operationsmanager at Dun Laoghaire.

"And in this case, we were particularlyhappy to assist Mickey Mouse, one of our all-time favourite cartoon characters."

The extension of the 1% Stamp Duty offer tomovers as well as first time buyers is intended tosupport people in the process of purchasing ahome. Initially available just to first-time buyers,Bank of Ireland is currently refunding to cus-tomers the Stamp Duty due on their property tothe value of 1% of their mortgage. And now theoffer has been made available to home ownerswho want to move house. The average mort-gage taken out by someone moving house is€211,600*, making this offer worth over €2,000to the average mover customer.

Áine McCleary, Bank of Ireland’s Head of Mort-gages says; “This is the latest in a number of ini-tiatives that Bank of Ireland has introduced tohelp make house-buying easier for customers.Bank of Ireland’s 24-hour customer promise hasnow been rolled out to every one of our 250branches in the Republic. Under this initiative,we promise to get back to customers about theirmortgage application within 24 hours - it includesa full credit assessment providing real approvalthat customers can act on, not just approval inprinciple, so there’s no hanging about waitingand wondering. In responding feedback from customers, anothernew development from Bank of Ireland is their

“House-Hunter mortgage approval” where cus-tomers are given full approval for a mortgageamount – before they have settled on a suitableproperty. This allows them to search for theirnew home with the confidence that the finance isin place. The approval remains valid for a full sixmonths.

“We are approving eight out of ten mortgage ap-plications”, added Áine McCleary, “In fact be-tween October 2012 and February 2014, weapproved a massive €2 billion in mortgages forFirst Time Buyers and Movers, and Bank of Ire-land currently has a further €2 billion fund avail-able.”

According to McCleary, mortgage applicants arebetter prepared than they used to be. “Peopleare coming to us now having already done theirhomework, and they know, for instance, thatwe’ll loan up to 90% of property price and thatthey must have at least 10% of the price pluscosts themselves.”

Hans is behind the wheel. He injects personality-plus in allhe does, whether running a B&Bor leading tours for Americans. And bouncy Marjet, with a headof wispy strawberry-blonde hair, red tennis shoes, and a knack forassembling a Salvation Army-chic outfit for under e20, is thesentimental half of this team.

On each of my visits, theyshow me a new slice of Holland. With each visit with Hans andMarjet, I renew my belief thatthe more you know about Eu-rope, the more you'll uncoverwhat's worth exploring.

Hans catches me referring tohis country as ‘Holland’ andcomplains that many Americanscall the entire country ‘Holland’when Holland actually com-prises of just two of the 12provinces that make up theNetherlands.

But in defence of those con-fused Americans, I remind himthat most of our cliché images ofthe Netherlands come from theregion properly referred to asHolland.

The word ‘Netherlands’means ‘lowlands’. The countryoccupies the low-lying deltanear the mouth of three of Eu-rope's large rivers, including theRhine. In medieval times, inhab-itants built a system of earthendikes to protect their land fromflooding caused by tides and

storm surges. The fictional story of the little

Dutch boy who saves the coun-try - by sticking his finger in aleaking dike - summed up thecountry's precarious situation.(Many Americans know thisstory from a popular 19th-cen-tury novel, but Hans says fewDutch people have ever heard ofit.)

In 1953, severe floodsbreached the old dikes, killing1,800 and requiring a majoroverhaul of the system.

We talk about all this whilewe are motoring into the coun-try. It's amazing that about 10minutes from Amsterdam orHaarlem, you can be in thewide-open polder land. It's earlysummer, and the landscape isstreaked with yellow and orangetulip fields.

Hans points out a quaint

windmill along a dreamy canal.Old mills like this were used topump the polders dry. After dik-ing off large tracts of landbelow sea level, the Dutch har-nessed wind energy to lift thewater up out of the enclosedarea, divert it into canals, anddrain the land.

They cultivated hardy plantsthat removed salt from the soil,

slowly turning marshy estuariesinto fertile farmland. The wind-mills later served a second pur-pose for farmers by turningstone wheels to grind theirgrain.

This area, once a mercilesssea, is now dotted with tranquiltowns. Many of the residentshere are older than the landthey live on, which was re-

claimed in the 1960s.The old-time windmills,

once the conquerors of the sea,are now relics, decorating theland like medallions on a warvet's chest.

Several other Dutch iconscame directly from the coun-try's flat, reclaimed landscape.Wooden shoes (klompen) al-lowed farmers to walk across

soggy fields. (They're also easyto find should they come off inhigh water because they float.)Tulips and other flowers grewwell in the sandy soil neardunes.

We move on, driving pastsprawling flower mogul man-sions, then through desolatedunes. The tiny road dwindlesto a trailhead. Hans parks the

Going Dutch in Holland's Polder Country

DRIVING in France is a great way to explore the beautiful Galliccountryside, zipping between its fantastic cities and stoppingat idyllic villages or along the stunning coastline at your ownpace.

Having the freedom to go wher-ever you want at whatever timeyou feel like is a real bonus, butthere’s a price to pay for that kindof holiday independence.

The driving part is easy enoughto adapt to, but there’s much moreto motoring in France than gettingused to driving on the opposite sideof the road.

Every year thousands of Irishmotorists fall foul of French drivingrules and regulations and end uppaying fines for simply not know-ing, or just ignoring, the laws.

However, it’s as easy to keep onthe right side of law as it is to keepon the right side of the road. Youjust need to make sure you’re pre-pared before setting off.

Here’s a few tips that will ensurenone of your hard earned holidaybudget ends up in the hands of theFrench police.

● To drive your own car in France, you’ll need to carry your Irish driv-

ing license, a certificate of registra-tion and your insurance cert (notthe disc).

● The speed limit is 50km/h incities, 90km/h in regional areasand 130km/h on motorways (au-toroutes). Different limits (posted atthe roadside) apply in wet condi-tions on motorways.

● France introduced new invisiblemobile speed cameras last year. Upto 100 of these are now operatingon board unmarked police cars, mostly - but not all nor always - onmotorways.

● Seatbelts are required by law andmust be fastened by front and rearseat passengers at all times.

● The use of a mobile phone whiledriving is illegal so bring a Blue-tooth or hands-free kit. The on-the-spot fine for using a phone is e130.

● The maximum blood alcohol limitis 0.5mg/ml. The use of drugswhile driving is strictly prohibited.

● It is recommended to have yourheadlights on low during the day.

● It is mandatory to have a high-visibility vest and a hazard trianglein your car at all times in case ofemergency.

● Children under 10 are not al-lowed travel in the front seat of acar. They also must use an appropri-ate child seat or booster seat. Ba-bies are allowed travel in the frontpassenger seat, but only whenplaced in an approved rear-facingbaby seat and the airbag is turnedoff.

● Carrying a Breathalyser in the caris now obligatory in France. Single-use breathalysers are widely avail-able for less than e2 but the goodnews is that there’s actually no finefor drivers caught without one.

● Radar warning devices havebeen banned in France since 2011.Most GPS manufacturers have up-

dated their software to comply withthe law.

● As a foreign national committingan infraction under the French RoadCode, you could be subject to a dis-cretionary fine. It’s also possiblethat your car will be impoundedand you’ll pay a stiff penalty to getit back.

● Signs indicating a motorway (au-toroute) route have white letteringon a blue background. Signs indicat-ing a non-motorway main route(route nationale) have white letter-ing on a green background.

● Budget for motorway tolls. They’re much more expensive thanIreland but despite the cost, it’sgenerally worth forking out unlessyou have plenty of time to go at amore leisurely pace.

● The cost of motorway travel for acar is about e1 per 16 kilometres. It’s an extra 50 per cent if a caravanor trailer is attached. In January thisyear tolls on the 1,060 km trip fromCalais to Marseille, via Reims, coste85.40 for a car.

Holland welcomes theworld's business, but Holland isnot designed for big-shots. Hansexplains, “Being ordinary isbeing prudent. We say, a plantthat grows above the grains getsits head cut off. Even our formerqueen prefers to do her ownshopping.”

While Hans and I talk, Marjetwalks ahead of us, collectingshells with the wide-eyed won-der of a 10-year-old. “Cheapsouvenirs,” Hans teases. Onecliché the Dutch don't dispute istheir frugality. Hans quizzes me:“Who invented copper wire? Two Dutch boys fighting over apenny.”

The frugal Dutch are, atheart, pragmatic. In this era ofglobal warming and rising sealevels, they're developing plansto upgrade their dikes and bulkup their beaches to hold backthe sea. All this technologicaltinkering with nature remindsme of a popular local saying:“God made the Earth, but theDutch made Holland.”

Marjet scuffs through thesand, her pockets full ofseashells, her scarf flapping inthe wind like a jump rope. Underbig, romping white clouds, everything's so Dutch.

I was delighted to hear that ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys D’-Movie’ raked in over one million euro over its openingweekend here.

Brendan O’Carroll’s filmabout Irish mammy AgnesBrown continues to do well atthe box office despite beingpanned by critics.

It’s now said to be thebiggest local Irish movie open-ing of all time, followed by‘Michael Collins’ and ‘Angela'sAshes’.

I was lucky enough to meetBrendan and his wife Jennifer atthe premiere and believe it or not I actually had themlaughing at my jokes for a change.

Paloma Faith went down a storm when she took tothe stage at Groove Festival last week.

The 33-year-old English songwriter and actress head-lined this year’s event alongside David Gray.

In an exclusive interview, she told me she loves theIrish due to our unpretentious nature.

What can I say - we like to keep it real!

I wasn’t surprised to learn that Kristen Stewart hasbeen dropped from the Snow White movie series.

The ex-Twilight star was expected to return for ‘SnowWhite and the Huntsman 2’, but the sequel is now set tofocus on Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman instead.

It’s alleged that Kirsten had an affair with director Ru-pert Sanders back in 2012. Studio Universal denied thatshe was leaving the franchise at the time.

I still can’t believe she broke poor Robert Pattinson’sheart!

Mark Wahlberg says he loved filming the new ‘Trans-formers’ movie in Hong Kong.

He leads the cast for the next installment in the fran-chise, ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’, which is out in cin-emas this month.

The movie also sees Wicklow born hottie Jack Reynorplay a major part.

Mark told me that getting to film in Hong Kong wascrazy as he was stalked by fans day and night. Nothingunusual there then.

That’s it from me. Until next week,

Best gig you've been to in DublinI would honestly have to say that thebest gig I've been to in Dublin wouldbe the gig we played there last year!Seriously, sometimes you just getthose gigs where everything goeswell - the onstage sound, the bandplaying great, an audience who arereally up for it, a great venue (TheAcademy) and just an all round topgig. So I would say that one.

Most memorable moment in DublinWow, there have certainly been a fewof those! Mostly Guinness based anec-dotes involving our road crew...

Who is the best person in your opinionto come from Dublin?Does Phil Lynott count? I know hewasn't technically born in Dublin buthe was pretty much from Dublin sincea very early age! One of my favourite

bass players, I was a big fan of ThinLizzy way back when.

First album you bought and last albumyou boughtOne of the very first albums I boughtwas of course Never Mind The Bol-locks by the Sex Pistols - they werepretty much the inspiration for meand Barney to go out, buy instru-ments, learn to play them and thenform our own band... and the rest ishistory! After we had seen them livethere was nothing else in this worldthat we wanted to do. So I must thankthem for that one day. One of the lastalbums I bought was Odludek by JimiGoodwin from the Doves - what agreat record that is!

When you're not playing music, whatelse do you do?Just the normal stuff really! I love

nothing more than being at homewith the wife and my kids, walkingmy dogs, watching Corrie...! I am alsospending a lot of time writing at themoment as I am working on my thirdbook which will be all about NewOrder. Having released two books al-ready I must admit it does get easierbut it is still a very long process to dothe books from start to finish, but I amenjoying it.

Is the music business a better orworse place since you started out? It's very sad but I would definitelyhave to say that it has got a lot worse- the music industry these days is verycut-throat, very dog eat dog - acts aredropped as quick as they are signedand it's a shame. That, coupled withthe rise of the Internet which meansthat bands rarely make any moneyfrom their recordings before it is boot-

legged and put out for free, meansthat the music industry has changed alot and not necessarily for the better.

If you weren't playing with your fel-low band mates, who would make upyour ideal band? Now that is a tough one... I think Iwould have Keith Moon on drums, JJBurnel from the Stranglers on bass,Lou Reed on guitar and Johnny Rottenas frontman. Now THAT would be in-teresting.

Any tips on lifeJust ENJOY IT!

First person you'd invite to your party? My wife, otherwise I don't think thatwould go down very well!

Last person you'd invite to your party?Bernard Sumner! Ha Ha!

‘SAFETY and Mobility for All’, an educationalgame designed to heighten the awareness ofchildren to road safety and sustainable mobilityis now available in a digital version.

This initiative is aimed athelping achieve the United Na-tions’ objective of cutting thenumber of road fatalities in halfby 2020.

The program has been ex-panded this year with a new ed-ucational section: a serious gamefor children ages seven to twelveyears.

It is designed to be played athome with the family as well asin the classroom or in extracurric-ular activities as part of educa-tional programs on the themes ofroad safety and environmentalprotection.

Léa and Jules, the two charac-ters who participate in the bigtransport contest organised bytheir school, have three assign-ments.

They must organise dailytrips, such as those betweenhome and school; occasional trips

in small groups, to go the country, for example; and special trips ina larger group, like a class trip atthe end of the school year.

Through role-playing exer-cises, children learn to travelabout safely and get an introduc-tion to the driving code (recognis-ing the shapes and colors ofsigns, understanding lanes andthe direction of traffic, taking intoaccount weather conditions andso on.

Players must rely on their ca-pacity for observation, their criti-cal faculties, and their team spirit. They also discover various as-pects of sustainable mobility suchas the use of soft transport, car-pooling, electric vehicles, renew-able energies, and recycling ofmaterials. ■ Through role-playing exercises, children learn to travel about safely.

This Kia’sgot Soul

Seán Creedon

KIA’S new Soul certainly has a lot of soul and if you can livewith the somewhat square look of the car, I don’t think itwill let you down.

The first day I picked up theSoul I was approached by twoelderly ladies in the supermar-ket car park, wanting to knowhow much the car cost. Theywere really impressed with thelook of the car and said theyhad never seen anything like itbefore.

I drove the second edition ofKia’s Soul straight after theQashqai. Both are second edi-tion compact SUVs, similar insize and price, but not reallysimilar in looks and aesthetics.

BOXYWhile the Qashqai has a

chunky look to it, the Soul hasa ‘boxy’ look, but I supposelooks-wise the Soul has proba-bly more in common with theSkoda Yeti. The new version ofthe Soul looks very much like

the first one, but Kia say thatnone of the exterior body pan-els have been retained and theinterior is a new design. Thenew version is built on thesame platform as the popularKia cee’d.

PROUDLooking at it from a dis-

tance, the Soul gives an impres-sion of somebody standingupright and proud. The back ofthe car reminded me of an oldRenault 4L, as it also was talland straight at the back. I drovea grey coloured model and cou-pled with a black trim aroundthe base of the car, it made fora very attractive look overall.

From the front the head-lamps really stand out and theyare complimented with a neatgrille. Inside, black is the domi-

nant colour, but there is a touchof gold stitching on all of theseats, front and back, whichgives the interior decor a lift.

The Soul has an old-fash-ioned type handbrake whicheverybody will appreciate andwhile boot space could, I feel, have been better managed, you do get a mini spare wheel. As I said it’s a big chunky vehi-cle and I liked the way the sidemirrors folded in when I appliedthe central locking.

TYRESThe week I had the car co-

incided with the best weatherof the year so far and my familywere all impressed with the ex-cellent air conditioning in thecar. The Soul handled very welland we all loved the high driv-ing positions. I don’t normallypay much attention to the tyresunless I get a puncture, butNexen caught my eye and, yes,the tyres are, like the car, Ko-rean.

Only two models will beavailable initially in Ireland, the

entry level EX version which willcost you €24,495, which ismore expensive that the firstversion. The higher speced Plat-

inum version will cost you€28,495. Both are powered bya 1.6 diesel engine.

One of Kia’s strong selling

points is their seven-year guar-antee. Kia is also a World Cupsponsor this year and if you buyone now you could rely on the

car to get you through two morefinals, the 2018 finals in Russiaand the 2022 tournament, which is due to be held in Qatar.

■ Kia’s new Soul certainly has a lot of soul.

New Peugeot 108 takes versatility to new levelTHE all-new Peugeot 108takes small car versatilityto a whole new level.

With a raft of enhance-ments over its predecessor,the popular 107, the new108 is a perfect runaboutthat's exceptionally user-friendly for day-to-day mo-toring.

New exterior styling, achic 'about town' characterand the choice of a TOP!Cabrio model with an electricfabric roof for the first time, make the Peugeot 108 asmall car of distinction.

Add in an ultra-moderninterior plus a huge range ofpersonalisation options in-side and out and the 108simply oozes appeal. It ar-rives in Ireland this autumn.

At 3,470mm bumper tobumper, the car is 40mmlonger than its predecessor. The overall width remainsthe same (1,630mm), whilethe maximum roof height is10mm lower (1,460mm).Available in three and five-door body styles, the 108'scabin space is almost identi-cal to the outgoing modelwith generous space for upto four occupants.

Where it is larger is in theboot, with a sizeable im-provement in usable space, now boasting 196 litres upfrom 139 litres.

The boot sill is 20mm

lower for easier loading. Cabinstorage has been upgraded; thepassenger-side lidded glove boxincludes a horizontal cut-out sec-tion, designed to take a one-litrebottle.

Ivo Groën, the Peugeot 108Design Director's goal was togive the car a more premiumand sophisticated feel, support-

ing the Peugeot Brand's moveupmarket and helping differen-tiate the 108 from its siblings, the Citroën C1 and Toyota Aygo.

Groën explained: "The 107had a very cab-forward 'mono-volume' silhouette, which atlaunch in 2005 was very mod-ern. We wanted to give the 108more of a nose and the power-

ful feeling that comes with that.We wanted to reduce the glassand increase the sculpting of thebody, and at the same time giveit a timeless elegance."

The 108's nose adopts thePeugeot floating front grille andlion-claw rear lamps, mirroringthat of its big sisters, the 208,2008 and 308. All of the car's

extra length is at the front, im-proving its impact-protectioncredentials. The grille is flankedby advanced bi-focal projectorlamp headlights, which, of thethree sibling models (C1 andAygo), are unique to Peugeot.

The hi-tech unit is one of themost compact automotive lightclusters available on any car

today. Similar technology can beseen on the Peugeot 3008 HY-brid, illustrating how premiumcomponents from the Brand'slarger vehicles are now appear-ing on its smallest model.

A sporty roof spoiler is stan-dard across the range andhouses the high-level brakelight. This design feature also

helps improve the car'saerodynamic performance;the Cd value has come downfrom 0.34 on the 107 to 0.29on the 108.

Inside, the seat quality, comfort and support havebeen improved dramaticallywhen compared to the 107.The driver's seat is nowheight-adjustable on all butAccess trim, and on three-door models both front seatsgain a memory function. This means they will alwaysreturn to the same positionwhen tilted forward to allowpassengers into the rear. Therear bench seat splits 50:50for additional practicality, and each side can be foldedusing a separate fabric han-dle accessible from the boot. Two rear seat ISOFIX childseat fixing points are stan-dard on the Peugeot 108.

Another practical innova-tion is the new parcel shelf.Gone is the solid unit of theoutgoing model, replaced bya neat fabric cover whichconveniently lies flat againstthe inside of the hatchbackglass when the boot is open.As the boot is pulled down, the cover cleverly pivots tothe horizontal, hiding what-ever is below. The 108 alsofeatures twin gas struts foradditional stability whenopen, compared to the sin-gle support on the 107.

■ The 108's nose adopts the Peugeot floating front grille and lion-claw rear lamps,

Est. 40 years

Brush up to make a great impressionPainting the exterior of

your property is somethingmost home enthusiasts cantackle themselves and it’salso the easiest and mostaffordable way to instantlygive your home a completenew look.

Exterior paintwork shouldbe renewed every five yearsor so both to keep thehouse looking fresh and toprovide protection from theelements.

As with all home improve-ment projects the key to agood job is preparation andwhile with exterior paintingit can be a bit laborious it’sparticularly important.

Before you begin you’vegot to make sure your sur-faces are ready for the paintand that means sanding, scraping and stripping.

All surfaces should beclean and dry. Sand downdoors and wooden windowframes and scrape off anypeeling or cracked paint. Ifyou are painting new orbare wood make sure youuse a primer, followed by

undercoat and then gloss.Use a wire brush to pre-

pare the walls. If you’repainting an older house thathas been painted over, it’spossible some of the olderpaint layers may containlead. If so avoid aggressivesanding, scraping and othermethods which create dust.

Fill in, repair and smoothany surfaces that are to bepainted.

Once the surfaces are pre-pared you’re ready to getthe brushes out and startpainting.

Before you start to painttry to divide the job intosections. At this time of yearthe weather is changeableand you may find you haveto take forced breaks. Hav-ing the work divided intosections will make it easierfor you to keep track ofwhere you are with the job.

Avoid paining in windyweather as dust may beblown against the wetpaint.

Cover plants and gardenfurniture with plastic and

FIRST impressions last and the easiest way tomake your home look inviting to guests and visi-tors is to get the outside looking right.

splashes use a piece ofnewspaper or card to pro-vide a shield, stipplingfirmly behind it and movingit as you progress.

Using a roller will savetime but the kind of roughor textured surfaces oftenfound on exterior walls canwear the sleeves out veryquickly so keep a couple ofspare sleeves handy.

A roller with a longshaggy pile is always bestfor textured surfaces and along handled roller exten-sion will reduce the amount

of time spent up a ladder.Sweep the roller back and

forwards across the surface, varying directions to ensurean even coverage. Use anappropriately sized roller forwindow and door framesand to paint behind drain-pipes.

Painting the exterior ishard work but it’s essentialmaintenance that has theadded benefits of addingvalue to your property andmaking your home morewelcoming.

you’re ready to go.For exterior painting a

brush of 4 to 6 inches (100-150 mm) is recommendedand coarse bristles on alarge brush will perform bet-ter on textured or unevensurfaces.

First up is the undercoat. Agood tip is to use an under-coat with a tint of colour.OK, so your house looks likeit has measles for a whilebut you’ll find it easy tokeep track of where you’vealready painted.

Always begin at the top ofthe house and work downpainting from right to left(or left to right if you areleft-handed).

For maximum control, holdthe brush so that it balanceson your hand at the pointwhere the handle meets thebrush. Place your fingertipson the metal tip and useyour wrist to guide thebrush. The paint will flowmore smoothly from thebrush.

Apply the paint with verti-

cal strokes crossed with hor-izontal ones and use a stip-pling action to dab the paintinto rough surfaces.

When painting aroundwindows or doors a gentlescrubbing motion with thetip of the brush is recom-mended. When using ma-sonry paint, splashes needto be cleaned off framesusing a damp cloth (or acloth dampened with whitespirit for oil-based paints).

New Amphiro watermeter is the smart option

DON’T get caught outwhen the water chargeshit as research hasshown that the averagefamily of five usesaround 120,000 litres ofwater annually, just forshowers.

The Amphiro Smart WaterMeter, exclusive to City Tilesand Bathrooms in Dublinand Cork, is the first self-powered water and energymeter for your shower.

Installed in three easysteps onto an average hand-held showerhead with noneed for tools or batteries, itlets you know exactly howmuch water and energy wasused in each shower.

A ten minute powershower uses about 180 litresof water so if each person ina family of five has a tenminute shower five times aweek, that’s a staggering234,000 litres of water ayear!

If that same family re-duced their shower time tosix minutes each, theywould save 40 per cent.

The unique animated

‘polar bear on iceberg’ fea-ture on the front of the Am-phiro Smart Water metermeans that even your littleand not so little ones cankeep an eye on how muchwater they use in theshower as the iceberg‘melts’ as the energy con-sumption increases.

Research has shown thatheating hot water for bathsand showers is the biggestenergy consumption in a

household, and is far morethan that used for cooking, lighting, the fridge or elec-tronic devices combined.

The Amphiro Smart WaterMeter is priced e99.99from City Tiles and Bath-rooms in the Red Cow RetailPark, Ballymount Dublinand Togher Industrial Estate,Cork.

Young people show entrepreneurial flair As part of Discover

University 2014, theyworked with staff, facultyand students from NCI ongroup projects – to createtheir own app, or make andsell citrus drinks.

The annual week-longcollege taster programmebrought together Dublinteens (14-17-years-old)from disadvantagedcommunities across the city.

This year’s participants

MORE than 40 local young people showed theirentrepreneurial flair recently when they took partin enterprise projects at the National College ofIreland (NCI).

came from Dublin’sDocklands, Ballymun andStoneybatter.

The purpose of theprogramme was to giveteens from historicallydisadvantaged communitiesa real feel for what life islike in higher education.

The App Developmentproject groups presentedtheir apps outside National

College of Ireland on MayorSquare, and visitors couldrate the apps after viewing.

Frances Sheridan, lecturer in NCI’s School ofComputing, said: “The aimsof the App Challenge are toharness the young people’sinnovation and creativitywhile at the same timedeveloping their computingskills.

“In a broader sense theaim of the programme as awhole is to raise theeducational and careerexpectations of the youngpeople - while enablingthem to develop the critical

thinking, learning, interpersonal andcommunication skills thatthey will need to achievethose expectations.”

The group began bybrainstorming ideas beforestoryboarding and wire-framing before developingprototypes for their appsusing codiqa, jQuery mobileand PhoneGap. Appsinclude a price comparisonof local sports stores, abeach comparison appwhich considers weatherand facilities and, capitalising on World Cupmadness, an app to

compare the cost ofinternational footballjerseys in nearby stores.

The enterprise groupswere at three locations:Mayor Square, George’sDock and Grand Canal Dock, selling glasses ofhomemade citrus drinks. Bytaking part, the youngpeople learned how to setgoals, create budgets, secure investors, select asite, purchase supplies, serve customers, make aprofit and repay investors. For many involved, this wastheir first experience ofthese life lessons.

Brigina O’Riordan, co-ordinator of the project atNational College of Ireland, said: “Many of the youngpeople came through thedoors of NCI and indeedany third level institutionfor the first time in theirlives and left with theknowledge that third leveleducation is fun, interestingand, most importantly, avery real option for them.”

The project concludedwith a showcase andgraduation event on June25, presided over by LordMayor of Dublin, Cllr ChristyBurke.
