This chair represents more then just a leisurely afternoon. It is a sym-bol of economic stimulation, cultural revival and sustainability. It helps to connect rural industries to one another. It portrays the evo-lution of an aesthetic which has been loved by the people of Ala-bama for years. This chair is not mass produced, the design is stan-dard but the craftsmenship is unique. It is one of a kind with its own makers mark.
This piece was created through an innovative collaboration between traditional basketmakers and furniture designers. Through their ef-fortd they arrived at a design which is new and innovative yet still connected to its Alabama roots. We try bridge the rural and the ur-ban to create a piece that blends well into your lifestyle. The back of this chair is weaved in manner akin to traditonal basketmaking. The traditional techniques used are juxtaposed to an overall contempo-rary aesthetic

Your chair is made from a piece of Alabama Red Oak. The lumber yard is 15 miles north of Tim’s work shop and the red oak forest sur-rounds the area. We have tried to reduce the displacement of the lumber, by connecting local lumbar yards specializing in small batch kiln drying to our network of producers. The result is a truely sus-tainable piece of furniture.

Billy Ray Sims is a traditional basketmaker who uses local materials from white oak to sweet grass. His work represents the result of sev-eral years of self-directed apprenticeship that involved collaboration with a number of master basket makers. It is homage to an endan-gered heritage. Through his relationship with southern perspective Billy Ray is now applying his basket making skills to contemporary furniturte.
