WOOD HEATERS & OPEN FIREPLACES Cold nights have arrived and people are beginning to light wood heaters (includes tile fires, pot belly stoves, or the like) and open fireplaces at home. Wood smoke contains particles that can have adverse health affects, there are a few things you can do to make sure your wood fire is operating correctly and producing minimal to no smoke. Ensure that the wood heater unit (tile fire or combustion stove) is in good

order, check that there are no holes in the flue, that the door is intact and can be shut properly, and that damaged or missing firebricks are replaced.

Clean the flue or chimney, or burn a soot remover compound to remove soot build-up in the flue or chimney.

Ensure your chimney rises at least a metre above your roof ridgeline and any neighbouring roof ridgeline within 15m of your chimney.

Use the right wood: Check the wood is dry before you burn it. If you knock two pieces of dry

wood together they make a hollow, cracking sound. Green wood makes a dull thud when you hit it together.

Stockpile in summer. You’ll have a supply of dry, well-seasoned firewood for the winter.

Split logs before your store them. Small pieces dry out faster. Cover your woodpile and stack it loosely. Your wood will dry out faster

and stay dry. Operate your appliance correctly:

Make sure the air intake is fully open, as a bright fire produces less smoke.

Add more newspaper on top just before you light the fire. Gradually add larger pieces of wood when the fire is bright and hot. Don’t overload the fire. Always leave enough space for air to circulate. Don’t shut down the air intake during operation or overnight. Let the fire

burn out and relight in the morning. Check your chimney for smoke during operation. See image overleaf.

5

When cleaning out the appliance, do not place hot embers/coals in your rubbish bin or out at the rubbish tip. Let fire embers cool properly before disposing of them in an appropriate manner – keep a metal bucket or can handy for this purpose. Cold ash and coals can be disposed of by spreading them on your garden beds, or taking to the Shire transfer station however you must ensure they are completely cold. For more information, google “DER Burnwise”. Your assistance in ensuring your wood smoke does not cause a nuisance to the community would be appreciated.

Welcome to our Flu Vaccination Program for 2017 We are pleased to advise that we have now received our Government funded influenza vaccines. If you would like to be vaccinated, please make an appointment at the practice on 9049 1147.

Who is eligible for free flu vaccinations? The flu vaccine is free every year for:

pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)

people aged 65 years and over

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 6 months to under 5 years (new age group added in 2016)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 15 years or older

anyone older than 6 months with any of the following medical conditions:

heart disease

severe asthma, a long-term lung condition (e.g. cystic fibrosis)

long-term illness requiring medical treatment or hospitalisation the previous year

nervous system disorder (e.g. multiple sclerosis)

a weakened immune system

type 1 or type 2 diabetes

children aged 6 months to 10 years on long-term aspirin treatment.

Private influenza vaccinations:

Help to stop flu from spreading

Protecting yourself from getting the flu will also protect others from being infected. This is because the flu virus can spread very easily from one person to another, usually when someone infected with the virus sneezes or coughs, releasing droplets that contain the virus into the air. These droplets can be breathed in by others, or transferred to anyone who may touch a contaminated surface. Good hygiene practices, such as washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water can also assist with reducing the risk of infection.

Looking forward to seeing you soon. Be flu free!

We are offering private flu vaccines for a small cost to those who do not meet the above criteria, and also for those companies who wish to have their employees vaccinated. Please contact the practice on 9049 1147 for appointment scheduling.

Congratulations Colin Campbell Cuffe

We wish to congratulate Colin on keeping such a good job with Toll Ipec for 10 whole years long service and having such marvellous bosses as Kaye and Russell Crafter. Some people take the long service all at once, but you are taking it in parts to make it easier for Kaye to find a replacement. You know when I was a teenager, long service was 25 years. They say you have to move with the times.

All our love, Ellen Alice Cuffe and family

Thank you very much We would like to thank Doctor Mark Byrne for allowing Bill to come home from Bentley Hospital to recuperate in Southern Cross Hospital. Now he is home, he is getting better every day after his bad fall. Also great thanks to all the medical staff and domestic staff who attended to William Robert Cuffe while at Southern Cross Hospital. And special thanks to people who kindly visited him or asked after his health. A million thanks to everyone.

Ellen Alice Cuffe and family.

Yilgarn Bowling Club News The Yilgarn Bowling Club recently hosted 11 vision impaired bowlers and their directors, not forgetting Ida the guide dog. It was a very interesting and gratifying weekend for both the club and the bowlers themselves. They arrived by train on Friday and then practiced all Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon saw 9 of our local bowlers join them for some bowls and all felt that they needed more practice to beat these vision impaired bowlers. Sunday saw them practice again in the morning and play some games in the afternoon. It was an extremely tiring weekend for them and by Sunday evening they would have been happy to see their beds. They returned by train on Monday. Some of our locals enjoyed an evening meal with them on Friday and Saturday, and lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They all expressed their appreciation to the club for our efforts. The club and the vision impaired bowlers would like to thank the following sponsors: Shire of Yilgarn for the use of the bus for

the weekend. Cliffs Natural Resources and BP Roadhouse

Southern Cross for their help towards the meals.

The club would like to thank all those who helped on the weekend to provide the meals and played bowls. On Sunday, David Auld wished them well in the upcoming national championships in Coolangatta and the club made a donation towards their costs for that event. We would like to thank Mr. Wayne Forbes and his wife, Nola, for choosing our club to host them for this year. Mr. Forbes has been a great supporter of our club carnival for 23 years and has always enjoyed his time in Southern Cross.
