Based on the aesthetic of timber architecture, the design works conventional materials and simple forms into a building that addresses the needs of modern living. It is designed to fulfill all the criteria to become a comprehensive life saving club house. Moreover, recognizing the lim-ited nature of natural resources, the south port life saving club is designed to minimize the impact on its location and also to use a little energy and as many recycle materials as possible.

View to the beach, and beaconsfield parade

The site is at Beaconsfield Parade in Port Phillip. It just located few kilometres from City. There is a residential area just

in front of the beach. The site also beside a children playground, which means in certain time, especially in school holiday,

it will be many people there. The traffic also quite crowded, as it is a main road. Moreover, the beach has flat topography,

which is a perfect conditions for recretional swimming, kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing, boating, scuba diving, and other

sports. Other factors, that makes it quite crowded, is that the site will be near the port of Spirit of Tasmania.

This table 1 showed the annual average temperature and rainfall in Port Phillip. It also showed from spring, summer, autumn, until winter. The annual average temperature is about 13.5 C. However in hot summer it can be 24.7 C and in the cold winter it can be 4.6 C. So, it have a huge different between summer and winter. In addition, in table 2 is showing what will be happen to temperature in 2030 and 2070, it’s been predicted that the temperature will be warmer dramatically So, it will be better for the new building or house in Port Phillip to use the right material to solve this problem. Moreover, the annual average rainfall is about 864 mm. In summer, it can less than 166 mm, which is shows the area is quite dry in the summer.

The diagram 1, showing the different temperatures in Port Philip area. It showed that beach area is warmer than other’s area. Thus, the South Melbourne Life Saving Club is located in the Port Philip beach, which has average temperature from 15 to 16 C.

The diagram beside is showing the average rainfall across Port Philip. It showe here that the area near beach is have less rainfall. The South Melbourne Life Saving Club will only get average of 600-700 mm. Which showed it is quite dry place.

Cold breezes come from the southeast direction. It could go straight to the new site building, because

there is no building or tress that could be a hindrance. The wind goes through the east side and some

part of the south of the building. Moreover, it have advantages but also the disadvantages. It can give

good air in the summer term, as it will be very hot. However, in winter it also can make the house colder.

Thus, it is a good way to use passive cooling system in order to reduce the temperature inside the house.

Cross ventilation could also be a good solution. In addition it is useful to put insulation in the block the

cold breezes, to make house more comfortable in winter.

The hot wind in Beaconsfield Parade of Port Philip comes from the northwest direction. Moreover, the

existing life saver club house is blocking some part of the wind, which allows only a little hot wind that

could go through the new site building. It then enters from the west side of the bulding. So it would be

useful to place windows or ventilations, for air circulation purposes, especially during the winter season.

The Diagrams above shows the direction in the summer season. At 6 am in the morning the

wind is blown from the nort west direction. It gives advantages to swimmer and also the ship ,

because the wind will help to push them to the sea. Moreover, atround 2pm, the wind will start

to blow from the south west, Then from 6pm until midnight the wind will blow straight from the

sea to the beach. Additionally, the average speed of the wind is at 13,6 knots, however it can

reach 33 knots at the maximum condition.

The diagrams above shows how the wind movement at Beaconsfield Parde in spring

season. At spring time, mostly the wind is blowing to the sea. Although the speed of the

wind is not really strong, only at average of 10,5 knots, it still give advantages for the

swimmer and ship. Moreover, at the early morning around 6am, the wind is blown from

the north to south, it will be like that until around 10am. Moreover, at 2pm, the wind direc-

tion, change a bit to parallel the beach area. In addition, from the 6pm until midnight the

wind will blow from the north direction.

Diagrams above are showing the wind direction in spring season in Beaconsfield Parade.

Spring is time when the weakest wind blown. The average speed is only 10,5 knots, and also

can reach only 1 knots. It shown the huge different to winter when the wind speed can be up

to 50 knots. Moreover, at the morning, the wind will blow from the north west direction, it start

to change their direction around 2pm, which the wind blown from the sea. At the 6pm the

wind blowing parallel to the beach. In addition, around 10pm until midnight the wind blown

through the north.

Winter is the season where the wind is blowing really strong. It can reach 50 knots with

average of 26 knots. Moreover, at the morning until around 2pm it blow from the north west

direction, which will give a strong wind to the playground arena. After that, the wind is started

to distance itself. From the 10 pm until midnight, the wind direction will go straight to the sea.

It will makes some parts of the house that facing north, will get strong wind.

These activities plan shows, where is the part of the beach that

people usually used for their activities. In this plan it is obviously

seen, that almost all activities are using areainfront of the

playground. It iis due to the sand in the left of the South Melbourne

life saving club is topped by grass, which makes the sand not really

smooth, and bumpy. So from this diagram, it gives sort of idea,

where is the best place for the South Port Live Saving Club. It

should be between the old South Melbourne Live Saving Club and

children playground, so the patrol administration, can see clearly

what activities that happen at the beach

From these two diagrams, it seems that both of the proposed site are having some advantages and also disadvantages. It is due to

that the cold breezes and hot wind that could through the the building almost in the same direction. Both of the site will get much

cold breeze to the west part, which is could be benefit in summer, when the weather is very hot. So, maximising the cros ventilation

will be a good idea. Moreover, both of them also could get direct hot wind, as there are no building that will block it. One solution for

this will be to maximize the use of adjustable window or ventilation.

Thus, although both of the sites have similar condition regarding to wind, when we consider another aspects of the site (ex. activi-

ties), the site that locate just behind the playground will be the best choice. As in there, more activities that happen, and the sand

in that area is more smooth and clean compare to the other site.

The concept of this plan is to make a house that blend wit the beach, so when people looks outside the building, they already feel

they are in the middle of th beach. Moreover, the strong different design floor plan between ground level and second level, gives a

unique building look. In addition, the second floor is much bigger area than the ground floor, so it looks like a floating second floor,

The west part of the second floor will be much longer than the east part, there will be a deck for members area there, so people

can feel they are more closer to the beach. There also a patrol administration and observation located there, makes them easier to

observe the situation in the beach. In addition, the cafe and kiosk will be located in the east part of the second level, it just beside

a deck, so people that going to cafe also can enjoy the beach view from the deck.

Furthermore, in the ground level, there will be a basement, public amenities, uniform store and first aid room. Public amenities and

first aid room is really important for the members and visitor, that is why it should be located in ground level, so people will get easy

access to there.

The initial concept of this design plan is to combine three separate buildings into one. It gives a unique

form, as the three buildings have a different area and height. Moreover, the buidling basically used simple

shapes, such as square and rectangle, as it could show the minimalism. In addition, the floor plan design

comes from overlapping the shape, which give a strong relationship between the areas.

Moreover, the building will be made of two levels. The main entrance will be at the middle part and there

will be a separated pathway which will link the east and the west of the building. The first level of the east

part is used for the training room and store while the east part is used for basement and aquatic storage

purposes. Furthermore, the cafe and kiosk will be located in the second level in the west part. So the

guest will get a good view of the beach. There will be a huge deck, such as a bridge, to connect the cafe

to the east part. The deck will be a good place for people to gather, as it could be the main circulation.

Furthermore, the east part will be mainly for members, as there will be “members only area”, kitchen,

uniform store, changing rooms and toilets, secretaries office, and patrol administration and observation

area. The patrol administration and observation area will be placedin cantilver., in order to give them a

clearer view to the beach.

The basic concept of the floor plan design, is to make a separate buildings to specific area , instead of making one huge building.

Each building have a different height and area which makes it looks attractive. Moreover, all buildings will be connected with one

pathway. This will give a member or guest a journey feeling, as they have to walk to reach other parts of the building. The pathway

also can act as a deck, where people can can gather, as the pathway is quite big, which is 2 metres wide. This strategy is having a

big advantage in term of circulation, as every building could get easy access. It also give a privacy to some parts of the building.

In term of planning, there will be no building, except cafe and kiosk in the area near the beach. This will give a good view to the

beach from every part of the building. The cafe that located in nearer place to the beach, is to give the cafe’s guest, the real feeling

of the beach. The mebers area will be placed in the north area near the road, as it could be the main entrance, it also just located

beside the change room and toilet. Moreover, the patrol administration and observation will be located in second floor, so they could

get good view to the whole beach.

After i developed my preferred floor plan, i tried to make a construction model, so i know if my model could be constructed and where the foundation will be.It gives the relation to the site, which is quite challenging, as it is in the sand. By using this model, it also gives more possibilities that i

could develop in the next design process.
