Dancing trees, a Gumdrop Meadow, Crystal Lake, Santa in his work-shop and wagon rides will soon be ready for families to enjoy.

Santa’s elves, aka employees of Swingle Lawn, Tree and Landscape Care, have been hard at work on Hudson Gardens’ 30 acres for a month or more, turning it into a magical place to celebrate winter and the holidays. “A Hudson Christmas” will be open 27 select nights from 5 to 8:30 p.m. from Nov. 28 to Jan. 3.

Each year, there’s a “Signature Tree” — one of the grand old cot-tonwoods — that gets a special trunk wrap and branch wrap to show off its splendid structure. A bucket truck is required to accomplish this as well as to wrap the Dancing Trees.

This year, one can look for the Signature Tree on the east side of the pond, near Santa’s Workshop, according to Kristi Manz, the Gardens’ concert and special event manager.

About 50 Dancing Trees — an increase from last year — will be wrapped with lights that are synchronized to music on the south lawn/concert area, where Santa’s Workshop will also be found in the concession building.

Santa will be there nightly through Dec. 23, waiting for parents to take photos of their kids with him. Hot cocoa and other drinks will

be available as well. Santa was a huge hit last year, Manz said, and parents welcomed a chance to take their own photos at no charge.

New features will include Candyland in the Oval Garden, inviting a whimsical walk through a Gumdrop Meadow, where each single gum-drop is on an individually programmed computer controlling colors. Six-foot light bulbs will brighten the deciduous woodlands.

The Rose Garden fountain will have ice sculptures lit by “wall wash-ers.” Manz says they set forms in the fountains and leave the pumps running so ice forms build and change during the open period. The pumps stay on in the Water Gardens as well, where a Crystal Village will be festive in white lights.

Wagon Rides will venture out onto the Mary Carter Greenway by the river and will be pulled by tractors this season, eliminating horse-related insurance concerns. They will be offered at no charge. (Not available Dec. 24, 25.)

If you go: Hudson Gardens is at 6115 Santa Fe Drive, Littleton. Park-ing is free. A Hudson Christmas is open from 5-8:30 p.m. Nov. 28 and 29, Dec. 5 and 6, and nightly from Dec. 12-Jan. 3. Tickets are available at www.altitudetickets.com or at the Gift Shop entrance: $11 adult/$9 members/$8 child. Children age 3 and under are free. www.Hudson-Gardens.org.

Inter-Faith Community Services has sent out an ap-peal for sponsors to provide Christmas gifts for needy families and for seniors.

“Our goal is to provide gifts to 500 families and 100 seniors,” said Inter-Faith community relations director Sandra Blythe-Perry. “We need sponsors to sign up, do the shopping and drop off the gifts that will be picked up by the families and delivered to the seniors.”

The annual Inter-Faith program is to help needy fam-ilies and seniors have a nicer holiday by providing gifts to go under the Christmas tree.

The system is simple. Each sponsor is provided with a profi le of the family they will sponsor, which includes names, ages, clothing sizes, favorite colors and requested gifts. The sponsor also usually provides a supermarket gift certifi cate to enable the family to buy the ingredients to cook a nice holiday meal.

The sponsor can make arrangements for a time to drop off the gifts at Inter-Faith but all gifts must be dropped off by Dec. 15.

“This is a nice thing Inter-Faith does for seniors like me,” said Englewood resident Betty Rainey, a previous recipient of an Inter-Faith Christmas box. “The gifts are welcome and I really appreciate them. The food gifts are really helpful because I am on a very small income and the extra food helps a lot.”

Blythe-Perry said typically sponsors spend an average of $75 per family member.

“The sponsor can select the size family they want to help,” she said. “The families on our list range from a single parent with one child to a family that is the parents and seven or eight children.”

The sponsors and the family they sponsor never meet. Sponsors take the gifts to the Inter-Faith offi ce at 3370 S. Irving St., Englewood and families pick them up at a later date.

Blythe-Perry said that if people do not have time to do all the shopping, they can make cash donations to Inter-Faith prior to Dec. 15 and volunteer shoppers form Inter-Faith will take the gift list and go bargain hunting in the stores.

For more information about the holiday gift program or to sign up as a sponsor, visit www.ifcs.org or call Inter-Faith at 303-789-0501.

The holiday season is about more than just rushing to stores to stock up on presents. Socializing and host-ing friends and family members to catch up on a year’s worth of news also makes this time of year special.

Before friends and family arrive, holiday hosts must take steps to prepare their homes for their guests. The following home prep plan can make relatively easy work of tidying up the house and ensuring it is inviting to guests.

Start with the entrance

Hosting can motivate homeowners to fi nish certain home improvement projects that enhance the appear-ance of their homes. Tidy up your home’s entryway to make it more welcoming. Be sure the front door and walkways are well lit. Remove obstructions and trim back bushes and other plant life. Festive decorations can brighten up the space. Don’t forget a welcome mat to reinforce to guests that they truly are welcome at your home.

Quick cleaning

Sometimes the joy of hosting can be overshadowed by the task of preparing for your guests. Although a thor-ough cleaning of the home is great if you have the time, it may not be necessary. Go from room to room iden-tifying spaces that are in need of a thorough cleaning. Spend time in the kitchen clearing clutter from the coun-ters and make sure the dining space is clean and the table is presentable. A table runner and a centerpiece of festive fl owers can brighten up the space instantly. Fluff cushions on sofas and give fl oors or carpets a quick vacuuming. Always be sure the bathrooms are clean and fresh, with laundered hand towels at the ready. Chil-dren’s bedrooms and other areas of the house may not require such a critical eye. Simply keep doors closed in off-limits rooms.

Create a guest sanctuary

Overnight guests should have a designated space they can use as a retreat. If you do not have a guest room, consider having children bunk with one another and designating one of the kids’ rooms for your guests. Fresh linens, an alarm clock, a television, and Internet access are nice touches.

A guest room also can be set up in a den or offi ce with a pullout sofa bed. Provide access to a nearby bathroom so guests can enjoy some privacy.

Hosting children is easier than hosting adults because they won’t require the same level of privacy and space. An extra mattress tucked under the bed in your child’s room can be an impromptu place for kids to retire.

Stock up on supplies

Purchase extra travel-sized toiletries at the drug store so your guests’ needs are covered in case they forget something. Store them in a zip-top bag and let guests know where these items are kept.

Purchase a guest set of towels, sheets and pillow-cases. Keep these in an airtight storage bag or bin, so when guests arrive, they will have their own set of lin-ens. Launder these linens after use.

Stock up on food

Ask guests which foods and beverages they prefer and try to have some on hand. Use your spare time to prepare some meals and freeze them. This way if some-one drops by unexpectedly, you can simply defrost a meal and have it ready in no time. Keep a tin of cookies and tea bags ready for those who pop in for a snack and conversation.

With the holiday season in full swing, holiday hosts must ready their homes for overnight guests.

Come the holiday season, many people fi nd it’s not just family and friends on their shopping lists. Coworkers and acquaintances often land on such lists as well, and it’s not always easy deciding what to get those people who aren’t close friends or family members.

BossGifting the boss is a sensitive subject and should be dictated by com-

pany protocol. If you are the only employee to buy your boss a gift, it may seem like you are trying to curry favor. However, if everyone else is gifting and you fail to offer a gift, you may be caught off guard.

Some business etiquette experts say that it is customary for bosses to give gifts to employees but not the reverse. However, employees who are especially close with their bosses or who work closely with them each day may want to offer a small token of appreciation.

When selecting gifts for bosses, do not give anything too personal, such as clothing, perfume or jewelry. Food or gift cards are a safer bet. Experts say a gift in the range of $10 to $25 is adequate. Chipping in for a gift with other employees may be the best course of action so you don’t inspire resentment among coworkers.

Babysitter or nannyCaregivers play important roles in the lives of children. Once you have

found a sitter or nanny who you trust, you want to ensure you keep that person content. If you regularly use a nanny or sitter, money is always a great gift. For a full-time nanny, one week to one month’s pay is adequate. For a regular sitter, consider a gift equal to two nights’ pay.

Coach or club leaderChildren today are involved in many different activities, and chances are

parents’ schedules are fi lled with sports games and practices. A small gift of $10 to $20 can show your appreciation to a coach or club leader. This is another instance when it might be nice to pool your resources with fellow parents to purchase one large gift.

Mail carrierIf your mail is delivered by the same mail carrier week after week, you

may want to spread some holiday joy. Mail carriers have an extra work-load during the holidays, when they are tasked with delivering packages and greeting cards in addition to more routine mail. Civil servants may be forbidden from receiving cash. In such instances, a gift card makes a great gift.

Trash collectorHauling garbage is neither an easy nor glamorous job. Many garbage

collectors appreciate a tip for their hard work. Take notice of who collects the trash from your home. If it is the same people each week, take the time to personally deliver an envelope with a small tip of around $20.

HairstylistIf you are a regular for frequent treatments and color in a salon, show

the stylist you appreciate his or her work with a cash gift. If you want to give a wrapped present, avoid tools of the trade or anything that is too personal. Stylists are on their feet much of the day, so a gift for a massage appointment or pedicure may be just what they need.
