South Korea is a member of the United Nations, a founding member of APEC and East Asia Summit. It is a presidential republic consisting of 17 administrative divisions and is a developed country with the 2nd highest standard of living in Asia having an HD of 0.909. It is Asia’s 4th largest economy and the world’s 12th (purchasing power parity) largest economy. The economy is export-driven with production focusing on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals, and robotics.

KOREA'S FLAG AND EMBLEM

Is the national flag for the Republic of Korea. It has 3 parts: a white background, a red and blue yin-and-yang-symbol in the center and 4 black trigrams, which are selected, from the original eight, on each corner of the flag. The white background is a traditional Korean color. It represents peace and purity. The circle in the middle is derived from the philosophy of yin and yang and represents the balance of the universe. The blue section represents the negative cosmic forces and the red one represents the positive cosmic forces. The trigram together represent the principle of movement and harmony. Each trigram represents one of the 4 classical elements. ( Heaven – geon, fire – ri, water – gam, earth – gon).

The flag of South Korea, or Taegukgi

The National Emblem of the Republic of Korea consists of the taegeuk symbol present on the country’s national flag surrounded by five stylized petals and a ribbon bearing the inscription “ The Republic of Korea”. The Taegeuk represents peace and harmony. The five petals all have meaning and are related to Korea’s national flower ( the Hibiscus syriacus, or Rose of the Sharon). It was adopted in 1963.
