smARTISTIC Tendencies Triage in the Classroom

Triage is defined as “a process for sorting injured people into groups based on their need for, or likely benefit from immediate attention or treatment” – the second definition is “a system used to allocate a scarce commodity, such as food, only to those capable of deriving the greatest benefit from it.” This is what our classrooms have become - the injured people are our students and teachers, the commodity is art. How could an educational system built by so many talented educated people become so ineffective and disengaging? Let’s take an honest look at the failure of “No Child Left Behind” and discuss how to rebuild on a solid foundation. Call it reform, call it a revolution, but change is in the air, and a call-to-action is what’s needed to take our schools and students forward into a brighter future. 9:50 – 10:30 AM: CHOICE SESSION #1: PFAAP, NGSSS, CCS, Oh My!

A look at how the Performing Fine Arts Assessment Project, its connection to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and Common Core Standards all work together in creating the curriculum for performing fine arts courses.

Mary Grace Gordon, Program Manager, Florida Performing Fine Arts Assessment Project, Polk County Schools Underwater World-Arts Integration & Inclusion Strategies

Visual Arts can easily incorporate core curriculum. The problem of how to tackle this is to focus on what you are comfortable with and then jump in! This session will show you how to plan a performance that will involve every grade level in your school. A shoestring budget, some preparation time and lots of eager students are all that is required! Try your hand at making a simple prop and see how much fun your students will be in for.

Brainstorming through Images

This session is designed to have students generate ideas around a major abstract concept through image-making and game playing. Three simple scaffolded techniques will get you from bringing the energy into the room to connecting personal lives to literature to generating a list of ideas around a central concept. The ideas on this list may be used throughout the reading and post-reading process. The three techniques you can use IMMEDIATELY are: -Stop, Go, Clap, Jump: to get energy in the room. -Cross the Room if... : to connect student lives to text concerns. -Make images in groups with bodies then deconstruct: to critically think major ideas at the heart of your text.
