• South Africa has a federal republic. Until 1994 South Africa was governed by white minority with little other or mixed representation and no black representation. A permanent constitution was adopted in 1996 for the country to be a fully multiracial country. The new government is headed by a president. He is elected by the National Assembly for a 5 year term.
