THE LIGHTNING LIFECYCLE

IT ALL STARTS IN A CUMULONIMBUS CLOUD, ELECTRICAL CHARGES OCCUR, THE BUILDUP OF NEGATIVE ELECTRICAL CHARGES AT THE BASE OF THE CLOUD INDUCE A POSITIVE ELECTRICAL CHARGE BELOW THE THUNDERSTORM

A NEARLY INVISIBLE LEADER FORMS A COLUMN OF NEGATIVELY CHARGED AIR THAT BRANCHES DOWNWARD FROM THE CLOUD, WHILE POSITIVE CHARGED STREAMERS MOVE UPWARD FROM THE SURFACE.

WHEN THE LEADER AND THE STREAMER MEET, A NARROW CHANNEL CAUSING A RAPID FLOW OF ELECTRONS RESULTS, WHICH THEN EXTREMELY HOT ELECTRONS HEAT UP THE CHANNEL AND CREATE A RETURN STROKE BACK TO THE CLOUD

Here is a thunderstorm forming in the desert. Notice the funnel like cloud as if forming a tornado.

THE DANGEROUS ASSOCIATED WITH THUNDER/LIGHTENING STORMS

• Lightning kills on average of 93 people and injures about 300 every year in the U.S

• With lightning, sometimes comes hail which is responsible for billions of dollars in property damage each year in the U.S.

• With lightning and thunder comes an unpredicted amount of rain, sudden overflow of the water in a river channel or other drainage way, takes an average of 140 livres each year.

• Whether thunderstorms happen on land and near the oceans, depending on the are they can cause other storms to occur like tornadoes and hurricanes if close or on the ocean forming can cause hurricanes.
