Sunday a m:le east of the junction ol Highways 38 and 30 on Highway 30. The cars involved were driven by Mark Christophersen, c:arence, and Michael "Lee Lynn, 18. Calamus.
The cars sideswiped with the Lynn car going more than 2 tenths of a mile before it went into a field. The Christophersen car came to a stop on
·the highway. Damage to the Christophersen car was $1,200; to the Lynn car. $500.
A charga of failure to yield half of the roadway was fined against Lynn by Deputy Stein.

In addition there were 2 cases of hit and run accidents in the county Saturday night. A car owned by Rudy Dammeier. Tipton. which was parked at Cedar Bluff was struck in the rear about 10:30 p.m. and a car owned by Linda Rose Frahm, Clarence, was also hit in the rear as it was parked in Stanwood. sometime between 7:30 • 11 p.m. Damage to each car was estimated at $200.

Gerrr.any. He married Anna Rush in 1914. She died in 1927. He married Julia Eldridge in Chicago in 1928. He had attended Brown's
Business College, Davenport and Northern Illinois College of Optometry. Dr. Doering is survived by his

Emety Hemingway Rites Are Feb. 18
Funeral services fo'r Emery Hemingway. 81. a lifelong resident of the West Branch area. were held at the West Branch Friends church Feb. 13 with the Rev. Edward English officiating. Burial was at Oasis.
Mr. Hemingway died at his farm home near Oasis in Johnson county Feb. 11.
Born Sept. 7, 1891 near Centerdale, he was the son of Albert Negus and Ada Adams Hemingway. He was a graduate of West Branch High School and was rnarded in 1918 to Etta Coulter at Iowa City. He was a retired farmer and
had been active in the Johnson County Farm BUreau and Cedar County and State Histor!cal as~ sociations. He was a member of the West Branch Friends Church. Mr. Hemingway was a distant
cousin of President Richard Nixon. Mr. Hemingway ar1d President Nixon are grea•.grandsons of Hope Hemingway, who lived in West Branch.
Survivors includo his wrfB: 2 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Esther) Murphy, West Branch and Mrs. Edwin (Ada) Teet, Unton Grove, Wis.; 2 sons, ElrnBr E., West Branch and Keith P., Iowa C!ty; 18 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Linna Gleason, Solon and Mrs. May Davit;, Milford.

Gordon Smith Services Held At Clarence
Last rites for Gordon Smith. 69, Clarence, former state legislator, county coroner and mayor of Clarence. were held at the United Methodist church, Clarence. Feb. 12. The Rev. Charles McNeeley, Martelle and the Rev. Jnmes Lusher. Clarence. officiated. Pallbearers were Glen.Jensen.
Owen Slaymaker, Hans Chris· tiansen. John Hoffner. Raymond Doermann ar.d Dale Struthers. Honorary pallbearers were Flwood Kirkoatrirk, Lll~ter Kellv. Wayn~ Saunders. Harry Decker and Paul Busching. Marjorie Lacock was organist and Dillon Holcomb, soloist. Eveadell Brink. Mrs. Elwood
Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Wilbert Wiebke were in charge of flowers. Burial was in the Clarence cemetery where Masonic rites were conducted. Mr. Smith died 1t St. luke's
hospital. Cedar F.apids. Feb. 9. He had been aken by ambulance to the hospital feb. 8 after suffering a heart attack. The son of Charles and Sarah
Andersen Smith. he was born at Clarence July 27. 1903 and was married to Alsa Bowers at Waterloo June 16. 1926. .<\ctive in Republican politics
most of his life. Mr. Smith served in the Iowa legislature for 2 terms. He defeated LaMar Foster. 3.198 to 2. 792 in 1938 and Ed F. Walshire. 5,058 to 2,988. in 1940. He was Cedar county coroner from Aug. 26, 1946 to Dec. 31. 1952. Mr. Smith also served as mayor
of Clarence in 1945 and 1946. He was active as a lay minister,
speaking at churd1 and at funeral services throughout the Cedar county area. He was also a popular speaker on the history of Iowa and Cedar county. His r~owledge of the history of the Cedar county area was considered unrivaled. and he had several article-s published in the Cedar County historical review. He was considered ''the authority" on the histor-y ot his area. He ma::rJ!ained an office in
Clarence where he conducted a variety of professional and business services and w<Js ac~ tive in tho preparation of income tax returns at f.hc time of his death.
