DIRECTOR OF GREEK AFFAIRS

Welcome Gauchos! I hope this school year has you excited to try new things, make new friends, and get you connected to all UC Santa Barbara has to offer! Getting involved in a student organization plays a huge role in the smooth transition to college. Whether you are a new freshman, incoming transfer student, or a continuing student, I highly recommend getting involved on campus! Research has shown that student engagement in extracurricular activities can greatly influence one’s academic success, social development, and overall happiness! Go-ing Greek can be a great opportunity for you to explore and find your niche at UCSB. As a member of a UCSB sorority myself, I can personally attest to the amazing and long-lasting benefits going Greek has provided me. Running for positions in my chapter gave me confidence, time management, and profes-sional skill sets. Getting involved challenged me to focus on my academics, pushed me to be a better friend and role model, and instilled in me the value of everlasting friendship. I found my “home away from home” in Greek Life and a support system that I still consider family. I know joining a sorority was the best decision I made in college. I encourage you to check out Greek Life and see what we are all about! Warm Regards, Kristin Van Ramshorst Director, Fraternities & Sororities UC Santa Barbara

PANHELLENIC PRESIDENT

5

My name is Triana and I am honored to serve our community as the 2013 Panhel-lenic Council President. I work with an executive board of ten elected officials along with ten chapter delegates. We help plan events such as Greek Week, scholarship banquets, and educational workshops. Panhellenic also collaborates with other Greek Councils, on-campus organizations and the university. Joining a sorority was the best decision I have made in college. I have met some of the most inspiring, bright, and com-passionate women that I know I will call friends for life. I highly encourage any-one interested in recrutiemnt to give it a try. I look forward to meeting all of you this fall and Go Gauchos! Triana

PANHELLENIC VP RECRUITMENT

6

Welcome to UCSB! We are so excited that you are interested in becoming a part of our Panhellenic community! Recruitment is one of the most exciting times in our organizations. As Potential New Members, you spend a week getting to know members of each chapter and finding out which chapter you want to call home. If you are anything like I was, you might be ner-vous about going through recruitment because you don’t know what to expect. In this guide-book, I have compiled pages of information to give you insight into the recruitment process. Some of you may be debating whether you would like to go Greek and I encourage you to skim through the pages and read about what life is really like as a member of a sorority. Be-ing a part of a sorority is so much more than the stereotypes that pop culture gives it - it’s friend-ship, service, leadership experience and much more! If you have any questions about recruit-ment or greek life, please feel free to reach out to me or one of the members on the Panhellenic Executive Board - We are happy to help!

I’m so excited to meet you all! Panhellenic Love, Courtney

RHO GAMS

9

Recruitment Counselors (known affectionately as Rho Gams) are disaffiliated members of Panhellenic sororities that help Potential New Members (PNMs) throughout the week of recruitment. Rho Gams go through an extensive training program before recruitment week begins. This

trainging program teaches Rho Gams how to handle almost any recruitment problem that may arise. Each Rho Gam has a walking group of 16-20 PNMs. A PNMs Rho Gam is there

to help and support her in any way that she can. PNMs should feel comfortable to talk about any recruitment con-

cerns they may have with their Rho Gam.

Check out our website (www.ucsbpanhellenic.com) to read bios on the Fall 2013 Rho Gams!

Sorority Life at UCSB

Being a part of a sorority is not just for four years, but for life.

Joining a chapter means creating life long friendships,

traditions, and memories.

Sorority life at UCSB also opens the door to many more leadership

opportunities, scholastic success, and

social growth.

Leadership

11

Many women in Panhellenic are involved in countless leadership activities here at UCSB. Some of these activities include being student leades for Associated Students - the Internal Vice President, AS Senators, and Rally Com-mittee Chair to name a few position that Pan-hellenic members hold. Other members are presidents of student organizations and serve on executive boards for organizations as well. Panhellenic also gives members the opportunity to be involved in the leadership of their chapter with women gaining leadership experience in the fields of Finance, Public Relations, Judicial Affairs, Team Building, Philanthropic Events, Event Coordination, and much more!

Scholarship

12

Grades are a very important part of being at UCSB, so I know many of you may be asking, “How do I balance sorority life with my academics?” The Greek system is known for having some of the highest GPAs on campus, and there are a lot of ways that houses helo thier members do well in school. Many houses host study hours and put on time management and stress workshops. Also, some of your sisters may have already some of the classes you are taking, or are even taking some of the classes you are now, so they can help you study. Plus, most chapters require that members have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to push their members to excel academically.

Philanthropy

13

Panhellenic chapters here at UCSB hold philantrhopic events for countless non-prof-it organizations. Greek Life here at UCSB donates over $150,000 each year to chairties. UCSB Greeks have also donate on average 20,000 hours of community service to the Santa Barbara community each year. Greek Life at UCSB is also the largest con-tributor to the AS Food Bank.

Sisterhood and Social

14

Membership in Panhellenic provides a sisterhod experience that goes beyond your college years and lasts a life time.

Each Panhellenic chapter holds many social activi-ties for their members to participate in. These activi-ties range from sisterhood nights, mixers with frater-nities, and date parties.

RECRUITMENT FAQWhy should I go Greek? There are many reasons to go Greek here at UCSB! Many Greeks joined because of the networking opportunities that Greek Life offers during and beyond col-lege. Other Greeks joined because it made a large school (UCSB has over 18,000 undergraduates!) seem smaller creating the best of both worlds – the sense of community offered in a smaller campus and the amazing resources available at large campuses. Some people joined Greek Life because it was a great way to be involved on campus, meet new people, and make a difference in their communi-ty. Joining a sorority also paves the way to creating life long friendships with not only members of your own chapter, but other Greek organizations as well!

How time consuming is being a member of a sorority? Will I be able to be part of a sorority and do well in school? Being in a sorority takes up as much time as you would like it to. You get as much out of sorority life as you put into it. Generally, sororities have a chapter meeting and dinner on Monday nights, which last an hour to two hours. There are other opportunities for members to participate in their sorority’s activities – study hours, date parties, sisterhood events, and many more. Most are not re-quired and women participate when they can.Scholarship is one of the Four Pillars of Panhellenic. This means that members are committed to excelling academically and put school work as a a priority.

What if I do not like any sorority during recruitment? What if I do not like the sorority I end up joining? It’s okay if you do not like any of the sororities during recruitment. We recom-mend that you go through the entire recruitment process if you can because it is often the case that chapters you didn’t like at the beginning of the week will end up being your favorite by the last day! Sorority chapters have around 120 women, which is why it is encouraged that you go through recruitment as long as possible so you can meet as many of the women in each chapter as you can be-fore you make your final decision. If you still do not like any sorority during re-cruitment, consult with your Recruitment Counselor (or Rho Gam) about it — you do not have to join a sorority if you go through recruitment. If you end up joining a sorority and not liking it then you can always drop the so-rority before you become initiated (or even after initiation). You only have to be in a sorority for as long as you want to be a member of the sorority. If you drop the sorority before you become an initiated member, you may go through re-cruitment again the following year.

23

Bid: A formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority.Chapter : The local collegiate branch of a national fraternity or soror-ity. Every Panhellenic sorority at UCSB also maintains a chapter house with residential and dining facilities for members.College Panhellenic Council: A council for all of the National Pan-hellenic Conference sorority chapters on a campus. This council serves as the governing body for all NPC chapters on campus and organizes the recruitment process. Each chapter chooses a delegate to sit on its College Panhellenic council. Continuous Open Bidding (COB): An opportunity for chapters that do not reach quota during primary recruitment to bid to total and/or quota. The continuous open bidding process is less formal, and not all chapters will participate in continuous open bidding.Infraction: Infractions can be given to any Panhellenic or IFC organi-zation that violates the rules of the recruitment or rush process.Initiation: A traditional ceremony that brings a new member into full membership of a sorority or fraternity. Once you are initiated into an NPC sorority, you are ineligible for membership in any other. Legacy: To be a legacy means that you have an older family member (brother, sister, mother, father, grandmother, or grandfather) who was a member of a Greek organization.Letter of Recommendation: A statement or letter from an alumnus/alumna or an active member of a fraternity/sorority, which recom-mends a prospective member for membershipProspective New Member or PNM: A term used for undergraduate men and women interested in becoming a member of a fraternity/so-rority.Quota: The number of potential new members to which each chapter can offer bids during formal recruitment. This is determined with a formula involving the number of chapters and the number of women participating in bid matching. Snap bidding: An option available to chapters that did not fill quota. Chapters may offer bids to potential new members whose prefer-ences were not matched, meaning they would not be extended a bid by chapters they listed on their preference rankings after preference round. This process takes place before bids are distributed.

SORORITY DICTIONARY

24

Know the Rules . . .

- Do not remove anything from chapter houses - No name dropping - No talking about alcohol or drugs - No hot boxing (when three or more active sorority members talk to you at once) - No dicussion of money - No oral bidding (when an active member tells you that you will be called back to a chapter or that you will re-ceive a bid from that chapter) - No contact with active members outside of recruitment events (ie. Facebook, texting, etc.) - No alcohol or drug use during formal recruitment week - No contact with fraternity men or being on fraternity property

25

- Do not discuss chapter preferences with other PNMs (joining should be your decision, not your friends!) - Talk with a Recruitment Counselor (Rho Gam) if you have concerns, questions, or issues that arise! - HAVE FUN AND BE YOURSELF!

26

Summer Do’s and Do Not’sDO Research chapters. Check out chapters’ websites, philanthropies, and inter/national organization’s websites to learn more about all of them. Make sure you use cedible sources when looking to find out information about chapters.

DO Ask Questions to members of the Panhellenic Executive Board and the Office of Greek Life about any questions you have about Greek Life.

DO NOT give your contact information to individual members of Panhellen-ic sororities. Current members are aware that they are not allowed to com-municate with Potential New Members outside of recruitment parties (this includes summer).

DO NOT believe rumors you hear or read about houses. These are most likely false. All of the Panhellenic chapters are unique and offer a great experience.

DO NOT stress. Recruitment should be an exciting time! Enjoy every moment of it!

27

Recruitment Hints & Tips- Ask questions. Not only does asking questions keep the conver-sation flowing, but it is also your chance to find out information about chapters that you are interested in learning.- Take notes. You will be visiting a lot of chapters during the week. Write down names, what you talked about, and anything else that will help you remember the chapter. These will be useful when you are making your decisions later in the week.- Keep an open mind. Don’t rule out a chapter after talking to only a small handful of members. Chapter have around 120 members! You may change your mind and end up liking the chapter later in the week after talking to more members- stay positive! All chapters have something great to offer.- Be polite. Even if you do not like a chapter, be kind and interested in the conversation. Remember that you are a guest in their house.Wear comfortable shoes. The days are long and you will be walk-ing a lot. Try to wear shoes that you would be comfortable walking in for a couple hours. If you wear heels, bring flip-flops for walking in between chapter- Make your own decisions. Don’t listen to any rumors that people tell you about houses — most likely they are not true. Most important-ly, do not let the opinions of other women effect your decision about a house. All that matters is that YOU like the house.- Be careful what you say. Try to say only positive things about chapters when you are around other people. If you feel negatively about a house, try not to discuss it around other PNMs. You don’t want to sway their feelings about a house — they may have loved that chapter!- HAVE FUN! Remember to enjoy yourself. Recruitment is a great time where you get to meet so many new people and start one of the best chapters of your life.

28

What is MRABA?

The Membership Recruitment Accep-tance Binding Agreement (MRABA). This is a one-year binding agreement

signed by a potential new member when ranking chapters after prefer-ence round. A PNM agrees to accept a bid from any chapter she lists on her MRABA. If a PNM receives a

bid to a chapter she lists and declines it, she is bound to it for one year or

until the next primary recruitment pe-riod, meaning she cannot accept a bid to any other organization. If a PNM

signs a MRABA and does not receive a bid, she is eligible for continuous

open bidding or snap bidding.

29

Letters of Recommendation

Letters of Recommendation are NOT REQUIRED for partici-pation in Panhellenic recruitment. A Potential New Member will NOT be negatively impacted if she does not have letters of recommendation. If you do have letters of recommenda-

tion, they should be mailed no later than September 13th. They should be mailed to the Offie of Greek Life at the following
