SORORITY ROW ANALYSIS

Page 2: Sorority row analysis

This is a long shot used to illustrate the fact that they are in a secluded location, which is conventional of horror films. The particular location is an abandoned mine, which creates a harsh, dangerous setting as opposed to a secluded meadow.

Mid shot showing man about to stab the women with the tire iron. This signifies he is going to kill her, but she is only pretending to be dead, but he doesn’t know this. This creates a situation where a prank has gone wrong, ending in disaster. It is conventional of a horror film that someone innocent dies. It is also a significant shot as it is the moment that the situation turns bad.

This is a high angle shot showing the characters looking down into a mine shaft. This s a way of showing that they have obviously thrown the dead person into the mine shaft. The circle of light surrounded by darkness signifies death and the light/darkness is a contrast of life and death.

This is a similar shot, showing a tire iron falling towards the camera and down the mineshaft. This signifies the end of the scene and finality of the incident within the story. The shot is also used to cut to another scene further along in the story.

The scene on the left cuts to the scene on the right, and shows that the girl on the right isn’t as happy as her friends on the left and is standing alone, away from them. This signifies that she is still mourning the incident and is a subtle way of showing that she is the key character in the film.

The scene on the left cuts to the scene on the right. In the first scene there is diegetic sound as the phone rings. In the second scene there is multiple diegetic ringing to show that all of the girls have received the same text. This signifies a turn in the story and the beginning of the main horror of the film. Multiple phones ringing is a convention used to create a sense of fear as there is someone teasing them .

The three shots above cut from left to right and show the first killing in the film, and what the killer looks like. It is conventional of horror films to show a small piece of the killer, as obviously the killer will not be revealed until the end of the film. It is also conventional of horror films that an alcoholic in the film gets punished, in this case by murder. The scene goes from serene to instant violence, which shows the audience and is also a convention of horror films. The First to second shots are an eye line match from the women looking at the killer this is also conventional, as the film would be boring if the victims never saw the killer.
