Oliver, Jr. and Travis Winkey The exhibit and reception was enjoyed by all O n June 21, the AFRO hosted a media preview for its “Growing Up AFRO: Snapshots of Black Childhood” exhibit at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. The collection, which was the brainchild of AFRO Archivist John Gartrell, is a display of 120 photographs of children whose images graced its pages from the 1920s to the 1970s. At the event, Gartrell and museum staff members spoke about the exhibit’s background and significance. The following day, the AFRO hosted an opening reception for the exhibit that was attended by staff members, friends and sponsors. Guests included Carolyn Fugett, mother of the late businessman and philanthropist Reginald F. Lewis; Judge Robert M. Bell, chief judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals; Judge Marcella A. Holland, circuit administrative judge for the Baltimore City Circuit Court; Michael Cryor, founder and president of the Cryor Group and chairman of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Museum officials included Leslie King-Hammond, Ph.D., chair of the board of directors and A. Skipp Sanders, Ed. D., the museum’s interim executive director.

The brothers of the Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter and the Ira Dorsey Scholarship Endowment Fund (IDSEF), Inc. of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted their annual Black and Gold Ball, Night of Kings at the luxurious Hilton McLean Tyson’s Corner in McLean, Va. The centerpiece of the evening was the presentation of eight scholarships. The recipients were awarded for their academic achievements and potential for success at their next level of higher education. After consumption of a sumptuous meal, heartfelt thanks to the guests, and the singing of the Alpha Hymn, the evening transitioned to some ‘ole school’ jamming on the dance floor with music by The Framewerk Band. To date, the fund has awarded over $120,000 in scholarships to young college bound students.

Under the dynamic leadership of its Founder and President, Dr. Jacqueline Watson, the Jamaican Women of Washington (JWoW) hosted its 10th Annual Tea-Off to Good Health, a high tea and silent auction fundraiser held at the historic

Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Northwest, Washington, DC. Through this annual event, JWoW has had a significant impact on many vulnerable women, children and families, particularly in Jamaica and the District. The afternoon event kicked off with a grand reception and silent auction that transitioned into a formal program, emceed by Leon Harris of WJLA CH-7 News. A welcoming dance performance by Stefanie Belnavis, the Reigning 2011 Miss Caribbean Metro USA, kicked off the festivities. After welcoming remarks

by Cherryl Gordon, Charge d’ Affairs, A.I., Embassy of Jamaica and the invocation by Rev. Bertram Melbourne, it was tea time which was spiced up by a

splash of tropical fashions by local models. The JWoW JBS Award was presented to Orville “Shaggy” Burrell, Founder, Shaggy Make a Difference foundation that has raised a total of just over $1 million for the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston, Jamaica…he saw a need and acted! Once the auction winners were announced and the Hats-Off contest was completed, Dr. Watson gave the closing remarks: “One Love, Positive Vibes and Walk Good! Tanks ya!”

The Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce hosted its Annual Excellence in Business Awards Gala at the luxurious

Marriott Inn & Conference Center UMUC in Hyattsville, Md. The awards gala honors exemplary individuals, groups and businesses that have demonstrated

significant growth, community involvement, and leadership in Prince George’s County, Md. This sophisticated,

hi-profile black-tie affair with a “Hollywood Awards Show” atmosphere brought out the business elite along with the movers and shakers to toast the evenings honorees. Longtime TV and radio personality, Angela Stribling, served as the host and the Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker gave the much- anticipated State of the Economy Address. Rhonda Slade, the chamber’s President/CEO noted that the number of award nominations doubled over last year, which is a strong indication of the strength and vibrancy of the business community in the County. The Prince George’s County Chamber is an alliance of over 900 businesses representing over 300,000 employees; one of the largest in the state of Maryland and in the region.
