Summary The combustion process of heterogeneous condensed systems (HCS) is a complex phenomenon characterized by some peculiarities: Phase transitions in the combustion wave, time and space inhomogeneity of the temperature and burning rate, agglomeration and dispersion of the condensed phase, concentration limits, etc. The order and complete- ness of chemical reactions in a HCS combustion wave depend not only on the energetic parameters but on the composite structure as well (porosity, component particle size and shape, etc.). Some phenomen- ological aspects of the HCS combustion process are analyzed. Pecu- liarities of metal particle agglomeration and its in¯uence on the metal oxide size are discussed. The high-temperature kinetics of Al Al 2 O 3 interaction are shown. The complexity of the analyzed phenomenon calls for a non-traditional approach and technique. 1. Introduction Heterogeneous condensed systems (HCS) generally repre- sent a wide range of energy release compositions, which include gun powders, solid rocket propellants (SRP), pyro- technics, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) compositions, and explosives. Speci®c effects of combustion de®ne the HCS application. Thus, high-temperature and gas-generating mixtures are used in rockets and artillery (solid propellants and gun powders) and for the pure gas generation. During combustion of some pyrotechnical mixtures aerosol particles could be generated that can be used for ®re suppression, anti-insect plant cultivation, anti-hail protection, etc. Pyrotechnics could be used for signals, ®reworks, for the heat generation, etc. Due to the intrinsic heterogeneous nature of HCS their combustion mechanism differs from that of double-base propellants. Thus, some speci®c peculiarities of the HCS combustion process have been observed experimentally: burning rate dependence on the particle size, non-simulta- neous burn out of the components, agglomeration and dispersion of the components and reaction products, after- burning framework formation, concentration limits of com- bustion, phase transitions in the combustion front, etc. All the observed phenomena are interconnected, and result in an onset of a combustion wave that spreads at a certain burning velocity. The classical combustion theory does not explain these phenomena. The present communication is focused on some peculiarities of the HCS combustion process to be investigated by new approaches. 2. Experimental 2.1. Combustion Limits Concentration limits of combustion depend on the initial sample microstructure, i.e. cessation of combustion or an abrupt change in the burning rate at a certain mixture composition. When both components of a binary HCS are individually incapable of combustion, the ``left'' and ``right'' combustion limits are clearly de®ned (Figure 1). * Corresponding author; e-mail: [email protected] # WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH, D-69451 Weinheim, 2000 0721-3115/00/0409 ± 161 $17.50:50=0 Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics 25, 161 ± 167 (2000) 161
