SOLVING WORLD HUNGER

Group 8

OUR GOAL

• Our goal is to spread awareness to the world about the

serious problem of world hunger.

• Our goal is to be able to provide necessary supplies to less

fortunate countries in order to help end the problem of

world hunger.  When we first begin our project, we will start

locally, with soup kitchens and food drives in our community.

 Then, we will begin food drives and fundraisers in the hopes

of making a difference internationally.

OUR RESEARCH

• We have done research on various topics. These include which

countries need the most help, the effects of hunger, how world

hunger has changed over time, and what we can do to help.

• This presentation will hopefully answer some of your questions

and help you understand the mathematics behind our project.

PERCENTAGES FROM 1990-2012

• In 1990-1992, 18.7% of the world was undernourished.

• In 2012-2014, 11.3% of the world was undernourished.

• This means the amount of people undernourished across the world is decreasing.

PERCENTAGES FROM 1990-2012• This graph shows the change in

the amount of malnutrition over a span of the 22 years.

• The biggest decrease is in South-Eastern Asia (21.4%). This is likely because many people are aware of the suffering going on there.

• The smallest decrease is in developed countries. That means that even though the percentages are small, little is being done about it.

CHILDHOOD MALNUTRITION• This info-graph statistically shows

the effects of hunger on children.  

• Malnourished or chronically hungry kids are 20% less successful than those who are well fed. This can cause a serious negative impact on someone's life.

• It also says that 165 million children suffer from malnutrition. That’s enough to form a ring around the Earth.

STUNTING

• This chart shows the percentage of young children who experience stunting, which is when a child is too small for their age due to malnutrition or starvation.

• Eastern Asia, Eastern Africa, and Southern Africa experience the most stunting  because of their countries’ slow development rates, and there is usually not enough food for every child.

HUNGER IN THE UNITED STATES• Most people don’t think

of the USA when they think of world hunger, but in reality, there are places in America where up to 30% of the population don’t have a reliable source of nutritious food.

• Most of the USA is between 4-14%, but a concerning amount is higher.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We want to do everything we can to help with ending world hunger, but we need other people’s help as well.

• Some ways to help include:

• Starting a food drive or fundraiser. 

• Donating to organizations such as kiva.org, wfp.org, or heifer.org.

• Volunteering at a local soup kitchen or MANNA Food Bank. 

• Helping spread the word!

CONCLUSION / SOLUTION

• Across the world, over 800 million people are suffering

from under-nutrition. That’s about 11% of the total

population - more than 1 in every 10 people.

• If even just one of those nine people left over donated

money or food on a regular basis, world hunger would

drastically decrease or even disappear completely.
