Introduction Solar Microgrid Proposal for Provident Sunworth

January 25, 2018 Slide 2

–  Provident Sunworth housing complex has a collective loads of around actual load of around 249kW which includes both resistive and inductive loads.

–  Majority of these loads are inductive in nature which is consumed by WTP and STP

–  Provident Sunworth group wants to install around 100kWp solar microgrid power plant in phase1, in order to reduce its electricity bill and to reduce the Diesel consumption during power cuts

–  The solar power plant will be installed on a 10 feet elevated structure in order to utilize the space underneath.

–  This will be a flag ship projects.

Normal operating mode –  Grid = Available –  Solar = Available –  Load power>Solar power –  Battery charge = 100%

Grid and solar will be supporting the loads in this condition. Power drawn

from the grid will be Grid=Load-Solar. Battery charge will be

reserved in this condition.

Note: “Grid” can be BESCOM grid or from any AC generator (DG or Biomass)

Power export mode –  Grid = Available –  Solar = Available –  Solar power>Load power –  Battery charge = 100%

Loads will be completely supported by solar. Excess solar power will be exported to grid. Please note this

mode must be disabled in case DG/AC Generator is used as the source

Note: Power export can be disabled (Settable parameter)

Solar

Note: “Evening Priority**” mode could be activated for off-grid only systems

**In Evening priority mode, priority will be given to charge the battery during daytime so that loads could be powered from battery during night time. During daytime, loads will be catered by solar only if Battery>90% in this mode

Limit mode –  Grid = Not Available –  Solar = Available –  Solar power>Load power –  Battery charge = 100%

In this mode, the loads will be completely supported by solar. The excess solar power will be limited (Clipped off) in order to maintain

stability in the system. The generation from Solar=Load

Note: The same “limit mode” will be active in case DG/BM is connected for ensuring no reverse power flow to generator

Deep discharge mode –  Grid = Not Available –  Solar = Not Available –  Battery charge < %AbsMin

(Absolute Minimum)

In this mode, from the night off-grid mode battery continues to discharge

and support the loads until the battery charge % reaches a setpoint, AbsMin (Absolute

Minimum). Once the battery reaches %AbsMin, all the loads will be dropped in order to protect the

batteries and keep the control circuit active

•  Loads will not be interrupted for source variations •  Input voltage and frequency variations will not affect output V & f •  Operates with 100% phase to phase imbalance continuously

–  Support sources of capacity lesser rated than load (DG rating < Load rating) –  Operates with large voltage and frequency variation èRequisite for Biomass generator –  Capability to monitor/modify remotely –  Seamlessly can operate with multiple sources simultaneously

•  DG-Solar-Grid-Battery •  Biomass-Solar-Grid-Battery

Grid-tied Vs Microgrid Solar Microgrid Proposal for Provident Sunworth

January 25, 2018 Slide 32

–  Usually consists of a simple, passive DC-AC inverter which will convert input DC from solar PV to output AC

–  It cannot work without absence of grid –  System can synchronize with DG however it can backfeed to DG

and can damage the DG (Need additional sophisticated controllers for proper operation)

–  There will be interruption to the loads during power cut, until DG is turned ON and synchronized

–  System has no control over the sources, it will just synchronize and pump power to grid

–  System is cheaper. As there is no controller or batteries –  System suitable for MW scale projects and locations with no

powercuts –  Solar penetration will be limited to base load

–  It consists of several converters like charger, rectifier, bi-directional converter in addition to DC-AC inverter

–  It can work islanded, even with absence of grid or DG –  System can synchronize with DG and will never back feed to DG. It

also maintains required minimum load on DG –  There will be no interruption to the loads during power cut. DG can

be turned ON only if required. Can work islanded –  System is intelligent. Has control over the loads and sources. It

gives priority to ‘cheapest’ sources first then to costly sources (DG) –  System is costly as there is a sophisticated controller, charger,

rectifier and batteries. Also reduces peak demand of the grid –  Suitable for smaller plants of any scale –  Solar penetration can be upto peak load
