GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR THE PROPOSED FORTY FIVE STORIED
BUILDING COMPLEX AT RAJAGIRIYA.
1.0 Introduction
It is proposed to construct a forty five storied building complex for Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd.
M/s. Engineering and Laboratory Services (Pvt) Ltd. were authorized by M/s. Maga
Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, to carry out the soil investigation at above site by advancing thirteen
boreholes at the locations within the proposed investigated area. Thirteen boreholes were done
accordingly and the borehole data together with the SPT values with depth and description of
soil encountered are included to this report. The report embodies the findings and determinations
of above investigation.
2.0 Site Description
The soil investigation area is located in Rajagiriya. Previously it was a marshy land and then
land preparation was done by filling (approximately up to 3.5m) to make it flat. The water level
of nearest water source (Diyawanna stream) was encountered as the depth of 2.3m from surface
level of borehole BH-08.
After land preparation
The detail description of the locations of the boreholes is descriptively shown in the figure 1 (a)
and 1(b).
The drilling was carried out under sunny weather conditions.
3.0 Field Investigation
Field investigation consisted of advancing six boreholes at the location marked as BH-01, BH-
01,…, BH-12, and BH-13.
The boreholes were advanced with a rotary - drilling machine. The drilling was carried out with
overburden cutting tools and adopting the wash boring process to remove the cuttings from the
bottom of the borehole.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) was carried out in regular intervals in the overburden. This test was carried out as specified in BS 1377.
Engineering & Laboratory Services (Pvt) Ltd
Page 2 of 14
Disturbed samples of soil were collected both from the SPT tube and the cuttings collected from the washings.
Ground Water Level (GWL) was determined as the depth at which the water level stabilized
inside the borehole.
The field investigation was commenced on 25th of January, 2013. The summary of the borehole investigation is given in Table 1. Table 1: Summary of the Borehole Investigation
