Master of Political Science

The Division of Political Science offers an exciting graduate curriculum leading to either a master's of arts or master's of science degree. Through an immersion in political science scholarship, students develop the analytical acumen to tackle issues such as:

These skills translate into preparation for careers in the public or private sector that address challenging issues and demand rigor and clarity. Our program features close engagement with faculty advisors in a rigorous program of study. Being situated in the heart of Portland offers many advantages to our students including relationships with city, regional, state, and federal offices, along with active participation in internationally focused groups such as the World Affairs Council of Oregon.

Graduate students can develop an expertise in any of the four major subfields of political science: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Political Theory. Recent graduates have gone on to Ph.D. programs, careers in state and local government agencies, political consulting work, and work with non-govern-mental organizations. A graduate degree in Political Science offers our students the tools to move into advanced careers, using their rigorous analytical skills to work on pressing questions affecting our world.

MPPMaster of Public Policy

Nationwide, demand for graduates in public policy has been growing in response to the need for analysts and leaders who can operate within complex policy environments. The Master of Public Policy degree is one of the fastest-growing degree programs in graduate education - internationally, nationally, and regionally. With a focus on the acts of government rather than the practice or theory of government, the Hatfield School's cutting edge program is designed to meet the growing demand for public policy professionals in the public, non-profit, and private sectors.

The degree is built on the disciplinary foundations of the study of public policy within the fields of political science, public administration, and economics. The program takes advantage of the specialized policy strengths of other units in areas such as sustainabil-ity/environment, economics/finance, technology/innovation, health/social welfare, urban planning, and economic development.

The Master of Public Policy is a two-year, full time (longer if part-time) masters program of 61 credits. Coursework consists of a first-year core curriculum in policy leadership, analysis, and process (31 credits), and a second-year curriculum composed of policy tracks (12 credits), policy specializations (12 credits), a summative project (3 credits), and a professional development plan (3 credits).

Hatfield School graduates have gone on to prominent careers in government, public management, politics, policy advocacy, academia, non-profits, and civil society. MPP graduates in the U.S. have found employment in a variety of sectors: in 2011-12, 30% worked for the federal government, 24% for non-profits, 22% for the private sector, and 17% for state and local governments, as well as international governments and institutions.

Health Systems & Policy Ph.D.

The doctoral degree in Health Systems and Policy (HS&P) is administered through the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government, and draws on faculty from across PSU as well as OHSU. The program provides a unique educational experience for students interested in immediately applying theory to practice as they prepare for careers as researchers and teachers.

The HS&P program provides students with core curricular content in health systems and public health, extensive study of policy domains and applications, and intensive training in research methods and research design. In addition to core coursework, the doctoral program of study offers students the flexibility to choose one of four primary emphasis areas: 1) health systems organization, financing, and delivery, 2) health policy analysis and application, 3) health services, access, quality, and cost, and 4) community-based health and social services. The curriculum is designed to help students integrate coursework with applied research and practice and emphasizes community-engaged learning and scholarship.

Portland, Oregon is well situated for those interested in pursuing studies in health systems and policy. Oregon is a pioneering state in implementing the health systems transformation driven by federal health reform and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). HS&P core faculty are involved in state and nationally-funded research projects studying health systems transformation, offering rich opportunities for student learning, research assistant positions, and doctoral dissertation topics.

The HS&P program works with students seeking funding, either by providing them with program funding through graduate research and/or teaching assistantships or by helping them to identify funding outside the program.

Students obtaining a doctoral degree through HS&P can look forward to rich careers as researchers, teachers, university faculty, or policy analysts.
