Rationale for Renewal

SSHRC aims to:

• create more flexible and simple application and assessment system

• eliminate overlaps in funding program objectives

• minimize logistical barriers for applicants

• support for individuals, teams, and formal partnerships

Objectives

• build knowledge & understanding (people, societies & the world, from disciplinary, interdisciplinary and cross-sector perspectives)

• short-term research projects in early stages- (e.g. case studies, pilot projects)

• address new questions (for researcher and field)

• new ways of producing, structuring, and mobilizing knowledge

• use of new theoretical approaches

• individual scholars or teams may apply

INSIGHT Development Grants (IDG)

• competition deadline: February 1st

• $7,000-$75,000 for 1-2 years

• disciplinary/multidisciplinary peer-review committees

• scoring: Challenge(50%); Feasibility(20%); Capability(30%)

• separate funding envelopes for new and regular scholars

Replace:• Research Development Initiatives Grants (RDI)• International Opportunities Fund: Development Grants (IOF)• other strategic development grant competitions

INSIGHT Development Grants (IDG)

New Scholar

• has not been Principal Investigator on SSHRC funded grant

AND

• completed highest degree no more than 5 years before competition deadline, or

• held tenured / tenure-track university appointment less than 5 years, or

• held university appointment, but never tenure-track, or

• experienced significant career interruptions

INSIGHT Research Grants (IRG)

• longer-term support for research by individual scholars or teams (national / international collaboration, as appropriate)

• development / elaboration of new theoretical or methodological approaches to research

• disciplinary and multidisciplinary research activities & expertise in a variety of thematic areas

• mobilize research knowledge

• training opportunities for future researchers

Important: Insight Research Grants will replace Standard Research

INSIGHT Research Grants (IRG)

• competition deadline: October 17, 2011

• new instructions & application forms will be available in mid-July, 2011

• $7,000-$500,000 (max. $200,000 in any year)

• 3-5 years

• one funding envelope: no regular / new scholar applicant categories

• scoring: Challenge (40%) Feasibility (20%) Capability (40%)

INSIGHT Research Grants (IRG)Adjudication

• Reviewed by external assessors & adjudication committee• Applicant selects: group (below), a primary discipline and area of research

Group 1: History; medieval studies; classics; literature; fine arts; philosophy; religious studies, and related fields

Group 2: Anthropology; linguistics; political science; law; criminology; urban planning

Group 3: Business and management; economics

Group 4: sociology; communication studies; gender studies; cultural studies; library and information science

Group 5: education; psychology; social work

INSIGHT: Sport Participation Research Initiative (SPRI)

Competition details to be announced in July 2011

• Sport Canada funds to complement SP research funded by SSHRC research grant programs

• Research that builds Canadian capacity in SP research (e.g. overcoming barriers to SP; training participants, coaches and administrators; benefits of SP; better understanding of SP to inform programs to promote and enhance Canadians’ participation in sport)

• Available in the Insight Development Grant (up to 2 yrs) AND Insight Research Grant competitions (up to 3 yrs only)

• Applicant submits statement of relevance in IDG/IRG application. If deemed relevant & rated fundable (i.e. 4A) by SSHRC adjudication committee, it is referred to Sport Canada Relevance Committee for consideration.

• Insight Research Grant (IRG) applicants who receive 4A rating will be contacted to revise and resubmit budget, if original request was for more than three years

CONNECTION & INSIGHT:Partnership Development Grants (PDG)

• formal partnerships: disciplinary, interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, international, cross-sector

• research and / or related activity– (e.g. knowledge mobilization & meaningful involvement of students & emerging

scholars)

• intellectual leadership from research community; partners from public, private, not-for-profit sector (knowledge co-creation)

Examples• disciplinary / interdisciplinary research partnerships• networks for research or related activities (eg, knowledge mobilization)• partnered knowledge mobilization

CONNECTION & INSIGHT:Partnership Development Grants (PDG)

• Partners: Canadian/foreign post-secondary institutions, government departments, foundations, for-profit or not-for-profit organizations

• Formal partnership: bilateral or multilateral formal collaboration agreement b/w applicant & one or more partners who agree to work collaboratively & achieve shared goals for mutual benefit

• Evidence: letter of engagement & evidence of formal partnership (e.g. MOU, IP agreement, strategic plan, governance framework – drafts accepted)

• Institutional and Partner contributions: cash and/or in-kind support expected, but no minimum required (feasibility)

• $75,000-$200,000

• 1-3 years

• enhance the visibility and profile of social sciences and humanities research

Workshops• up to $25,000 (1 year)• held in Canada or outside of Canada

Conferences• up to $50,000 (1 year)• must be held in Canada

• develop knowledge mobilization processes and practices that benefit practitioners, non-academic audiences and university-based scholars

Examples: • policy briefs, knowledge synthesis initiatives, summer institutes, new media

tools, social networking

Multiple Applications to SSHRC

In a calendar year:

• an applicant (PI/project director) may apply for either an Insight Development Grant or an Insight Grant, but not both

• an applicant (PI/project director) may apply for either Partnership Development Grant or Partnership Grant, but not both.

Other restrictions:

• An individual may participate, as co-applicant/collaborator, in any number of other grant applications/projects

• Applicants may not submit more than one application for the same grant type in a given competition

• An individual may hold, as applicant (principal investigator/project director), grants of different types at the same time, provided that each research project involves different objectives.

• An individual may hold, as applicant (principal investigator/project director), a grant of any type, and may participate, as co-applicant or collaborator, in any number of other grant applications or projects.

• Researchers may not submit the same proposal at the same time to multiple federal granting agencies

Application Submission Process

• fully electronic submission for all SSHRC competitions

• applicant invites Co-applicants and Collaborators via SSHRC application system

• Co-applicants and Collaborators prepare and submit SSHRC CV online

• wet signatures not required on SSHRC application

• internal Application Approval Form bearing Dean’s signature to ORS (5 days prior)

review• ORS able to return application to applicant for

revisions prior to final submission

2. ORS approves and forwards electronically to SSHRC
