I. Present Sandra Carter, Sherie Coelho, Heather Hutcheson, Jason Newman, Anastasia Panagakos, Alex Peshkoff, Aden Trawick, Laura Roccucci

II. Last Meeting’s Minutes 9-9-15: Approved as amended.

III. Space Spaces Update Anastasia gave an update regarding gender neutral bathrooms. She plans to speak with facilities on Monday, Nov. 2. Right now, she plans to observe closely the current use of CRC bathroom and check signage, gathering information about the current situation. Regarding the CRC Vets Safe Space training, she plans to continue in the near future.

IV. Share Fair Update Heather gave an update on the progress for the upcoming Share Fair, Nov. 16-19. There has been a rapid response from vendors and there are at this moment 3 new vendors – Alchemist Community Development, Alzheimer’s Association, Ronald McDonald House. So far, no students from the Sustainability Committee have committed to working; that will be confirmed soon.

V. Adjunct Issues The committee confirmed that adjunct issues are within the committee’s purview and that the committee should work as an advocate for PT issues. Also, it was mentioned that FT faculty should work to support PT issues. Jason listed the basic issues of workload, academic freedom, work environment. The main issue centers on ‘space’ for PT. The committee suggested the possibility of sponsoring a PT issues conference on CRC campus with FT faculty support. An example of FT faculty support would include ‘office-sharing’. This would be a step toward integrating PT faculty into the CRC faculty. Jason mentioned his discussion with CRC president regarding these issues and believed that the issues were heard; however, action on these issues has yet to be seen. The issue of student retention was discussed, and student representative Aden listed the causes of student drops-too hard, too many units, pace is too fast, forced to take classes not needed; finally, students would like to have a football team! Jason mentioned the formation of a ‘faculty swat team’ that will assist faculty whose student retention is poor. Jason informed the committee of the Margaret Fortune Charter School MOV regarding an attempt to increase student enrollment by using ‘dual’ enrollment from this charter school. Regarding PT/FT issues, Heather mentioned the need to continue to do course coordination between PT/FT teachers.

VII. Union Report: Safety Issues Jason informed the committee of the current status of the ‘shooter’ response process in Los Rios. He mentioned the offering of ‘Active Shooter’ training and the errors that were made in the last shooting episode, as well as the measures to reduce those errors. Mistakes include racial profiling and slow notice of shooting. Sherrie Coelho mentioned her observations regarding inadequate policing on campus in the evenings and her feelings of insecurity.

VIII. SRC/Weave Events Sandra mentioned the possibility of the SRC in participating in upcoming WEAVE events, such as ‘Walk a Mile in her Shoes’ and an upcoming presentation and film addressing violence against women.

Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes October 14, 2014

I. Present: II. Sandra Carter, Heather Hutcheson, Anastasia Panagakos, Alex Peshkoff,

Laura Roccucci, Aden Trawick

III. Last meeting’s minutes: Approved as amended

IV. Safe Spaces

The Vets meeting with Anastasia will take place Wednesday, Oct. 21 It is expected to go well. The Vets Center has shown to be very supportive of the CRC Safe Spaces program. A campus-wide Safe Spaces Day is being planned for Spring semester to include speakers, tabling and the raising of awareness of the program, goals and principles. Gender-neutral restrooms will be addressed on Nov. 2nd with a discussion with facilities and SRC. It was noted that at FLC there is an active Safe Spaces program and we should find out how this issue has been addressed there. There are lactation and nursing pump rooms in family friendly bathrooms.

V. Adjunct Issues

Alex mentioned that he had arranged an ‘office-share’ situation with a part-timer by leaving the office key in the faculty mail box. Other options were discussed regarding full-timers assisting part-timers. Sandra mentioned that there are several empty offices in SOC that could be better used if opened to part-timers. This issue could be addressed by the dean.

VI. Accreditation

Aden informed the committee of the accreditation committee’s visit to student group meetings. He reported that the accreditation committee was positive and interested in the students’ responses.

VII. Film Series Alex reported a valuable resource, Brave New Films, a source of documentary shorts that deal with social justice, civic participation and other related important topics, such as how the media portray races, the costs to universities to maintain football teams, etc. This source could serve as discussion departure points in our events. Also, Alex explained a student-led activity regarding ‘Play-mobile’ a toy manufacturer that

Page 6: Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes · Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes ... Alex recommended the committee seek out Sargent Washington ... Social Responsibility

6

produced a ‘pirate toy’ that inappropriately portrayed racial differences. His student group will challenge the manufacturer and publicize this. Finally, Alex gave an update regarding the specifics of hosting Richard Wolff at CRC, suggesting that other Sacramento organizations would want to contribute and help sponsor him.

VIII. Share Fair

Heather reported that there are 3 new vendors to the Fair. She mentioned the need to solicit for men’s toiletries, underwear and socks. Also, there is an ongoing conflict between the sustainability students and the student development office, so she has been unable to get confirmation from the SDO students to work at Share Fair. She is hoping that this conflict will be resolved soon, so the students can commit to Share Fair tasks. Finally, Heather reported that the Oaxacan artisan event went well; she received a lot of faculty and student support for this event. The sales of jewelry and figurines were good.

IX. Spring 16 Film Series

It was mentioned to establish the topic and films for next semester’s film series, so we can prepare and disseminate promotional materials early. This season’s film series promotion was completed very late; the committee would like to avoid this.

X. Other Issues:

The committee showed little interest in participating in the WEAVE event, ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, citing it as humiliating.

XI. Meeting Adjournment: Next meeting, Oct. 28th, 12pm in SOC. Respectfully Submitted, Sandra Carter CRC Social Responsibility Committee

Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes Oct. 28, 2015 I. Present Sandra Carter, Steven Coughran, Jason Newman, Anastasia Panagakos, Alex Peshkoff Students: Jaime Gonzales, Laura Roccucci, Aden Trawick • ( attended alternative meeting time) Nym George II. Last meeting’s minutes Approved as reviewed III. Fall 15 Film Series There will be a change in the filmed showed on Nov. 4. Instead of Sherrie Coelho showing Default, Alex Peshkoff will show Ivory Tower. Alex mentioned the value of utilizing the Brave New Films, short video clips that address important social issues from an activist viewpoint and accessible on social media platforms. Using these types of ‘shorts’ coupled with in-depth conversations could possibly replace our current film series in the future. IV. Adjunct Issues: The committee continued to discuss ways to assist CRC part-time faculty. Jaime Gonzales informed the committee of the availability of a bathroom/shower located in the WINN building for cyclists. The performing arts building has gained a PT office from the retirement of a full-timer. There isn’t really any available space for PT faculty. The deans are responsible for their buildings’ spaces but aren’t forthcoming to offer up space. Jason informed the committee of the up-coming Student Center to be built by next year. It is hoped that more space could be allotted for PT’ers. Nym mentioned the high number of empty offices in the BS building. This is under Marjorie Duffy’s control. V. Safe Spaces At the moment, things are in a holding pattern until the meeting with facilities. Currently, Anastasia and others are surveying the current bathroom signage to bring this info to the facilities meeting. In the child development building, there is a lactation room and single use bathroom. Facilities needs to be ahead of the curve now; the search for gender neutral bathrooms will be needed eventually. Currently, the attitude from administration is unwilling, afraid of nefarious activities in a single-use bathroom. Clearly, it is a disregard for the needs of people on campus.

Page 8: Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes · Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes ... Alex recommended the committee seek out Sargent Washington ... Social Responsibility

8

It was mentioned that the Vets’ Center is very supportive of Safe Spaces; Also, a full Safe Spaces Day is being planned for the 3rd week in Spr. 2016 with speaker, various groups representatives and activities to make CRC aware of the Safe Spaces program. VI. Student Concerns Jaime Gonzalez informed the committee of the dysfunctional aspects of the SDO leadership and administration. He said currently, the office discourages student activism and creates barriers for student life and for students trying to establish friendships. The committee, particularly, Jason agreed to help the students. Currently, the students are considering a sit-in to bring attention to the lack of student support from SDO administration. Nym suggested that SRC craft a letter to SDO administration to encourage the support for students and their goals of social justice. VII. SRC Spring 2016 Film Series Suggestions were given for the next film topic: Broken Criminal Justice system and police brutality. Alex mentioned the usefulness of the Brave New Film shorts as starting points in discussions during the film series. Nym mentioned several films he shows in class by Jackson Katz; for example: Tough Guise, a film that addresses the concepts of masculinity and violence. He agreed to send his film suggestions of the films he has copies of. IX. Meeting Adjourned: Next meeting Nov. 18th SOC 12pm Respectfully Submitted, Sandra Carter CRC Social Responsibility Committee

Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes Nov. 18, 2015 I. Present: Sandra Carter, Steven Coughran, Nyen George, Jason Newman Anastasia Panagakos, Laura Roccucci, Aden Trawick II. Last Meeting’s Minutes: The minutes were approved after corrections were made. III. Safe Spaces Update: Jason informed the committee that he had spoken with Dr. Bush about the need of single-use restrooms at CRC. Dr. Bush had mentioned that his previous campus already had made this type of accommodation, and that changing signage is an easy, doable solution. Also, Jason mentioned the need for a campus faculty lounge. He stated the need to put any requests to Dr. Bush in writing, so that both have a point of reference and a source of accountability. Anastasia informed the committee that FLC has a ‘unisex’ rest room that is very appropriate for many different student, family and other needs. She mentioned that the CRC facilities committee will ‘talk with their constituency’ and will readdress this issue in December. Interestingly, it was mentioned that SCC has designated a ‘dedicated staff person’ or ‘liaison’ to handle the single-use restroom. This is in stark comparison with CRC. Safe Spaces Day is scheduled for Feb. 3. The three faculty leaders include Anastasia Panagakos, Alex Peshkoff and Priscilla Leforte. The tabling event will have 3 different locations on campus at staggered times – library, Winn Center and cafeteria. Each leader will be responsible for each localized event. Different activities may include a ‘treasure hunt-like event and a drawing. The goal of the day’s events is to define and educate the campus for the goals and purposes of Safe Spaces; also the goal is to connect many CRC campus groups, clubs and organizations. All resources, events, and presentations will come from within the CRC campus groups; an in-house event. Laforte is writing a grant to request from the CC&E committee to provide funds to purchase a banner and balloons and other needed materials. III. Voter Registration Aden Trawick informed the committee of his interest in participating in a voter registration drive in 2016 for the upcoming elections. The committee mentioned the SRC past drives and its success in 2008 & 2012. Sandra Carter agreed to provide the materials and training for student participants in voter registration. Aden stated

Page 10: Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes · Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes ... Alex recommended the committee seek out Sargent Washington ... Social Responsibility

10

that the SDO would provide refreshments to those that register. Besides the up-coming presidential election in November, there will be a vote for mayor and cannabis. May 23rd is the last day to register for the primary on June 7th. November 8th will be the deadline to register for the November national election. IV. Campus Safety Jason informed the committee about the new ERNI mechanism. This is something the CRC police seemed to be satisfied; however, they are impatient regarding the slow change for door locks; the committee asked about the recent grouping of police cars around campus and its negative message it communicates. Jason encouraged the committee to attend the up-coming CRC campus safety forums. V. SRC Film Series 2015 Jason will show the next/last film-Heist: Who Stole the American Dream. Sandra will get the film to him. Also, Sandra will send a list of possible film regarding the US incarceration system. VI. Other Issues: Jason informed the committee of the Los Rios task force focus regarding educational policy which includes the HIS, a Hispanic-focused organization that will allow more access to federal grants; enrollment management, more access-oriented policies with more course offerings to maximize enrollment and other mechanisms. VII. Meeting Adjourned Next meeting will be Dec. 9, Wednesday at 12pm. Sincerely Submitted, Sandra Carter CRC Social Responsibility Committee

Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes Dec. 9, 2015

I. Present: Sandra Carter, Steven Coughran, Anastasia Panagakos, Laura Roccucci, Aden Trawick. Heather Hutcheson attended an alternative meeting.

II. Last meeting’s minutes: The minutes were approved after corrected. III. 2016 Film Series:

The committee agreed that the topic of the next film series will be the prison industrial complex, our broken criminal justice system.

IV. Safe Space Update:

The committee learned that there had been no response from facilities regarding signage for single-use bathrooms. Currently, CRC is behind the curve in comparison with other Los Rios campuses and is out of compliance. Anastasia considered approaching CRC president Dr. Bush regarding this issue. Safe Spaces Day planning is underway with plans for banners, flyers, buttons, T-shirts for Feb. 3rd. There will be 3 tabling areas attended by SRC members. At the table, the public can make a ‘pledge’ to follow Safe Spaces principles. More information will be sent at the beginning of Spring 2016.

V. Share Fair Update:

Heather reported that the sustainability club students rose to the occasion to facilitate the 2015 Share Fair. Fall 2015 Share Fair was successful.

VI. Spring 2016 Plan

The committee mentioned the following plans: prison film series, speaker Richard Wolff, the Safe Space Day on Feb. 3rd, voter registration, Day of Silence, Earth Day and other possible events.

Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes February 10, 2016 Present: Sandra Carter, Steven Coughran, Heather Hutcheson, Anastasia Panagakos, Alex Peshkoff

Student: Morgan Bishop Last Meeting’s Minutes: Dec. 9, 2015 Approved as corrected

I. Safe Spaces Update Steven Coughran reported that he was interviewed by the student newspaper, The Connection. He gave a very positive response but hoping that his message was correctly reported. There was a wide range of diversity of students that took the pledge, including the Vets and Muslim students. There were concerns about the ‘heavy-handednss’ of asking students to ‘pledge’. It was suggested that students just sign their name. The banners, balloons and campus interest were very positive. Over 200 students took the pledge; the bookmarks were effective; the next step is to enlist more ‘allies’ to participate. This activity will take place every semester; next semester will be at Elk Grove Center with tabling and with student club involvement. Gender Neutral Bathrooms: Anastasia informed the committee that the Facilities committee resists addressing this issue by couching it with ‘problems with ADA”. She added that there is a California senate bill coming through congress that could influence CRC policy. She plans to attend their next meeting. Sandra informed the committee about the current SOC building construction to change the locks on SOC bathrooms to require ID cards. This development will affect the gender neutral bathroom plans.

II. Racial Insensitivity Article It was mentioned that the CRC campus needs a racial climate survey regarding the experiences of our African-American students. Due to the fact that we don’t have a multi-cultural center like other Los Rios campuses, we really don’t have a way to gather this type of information. It falls on the SRC to begin a survey with the help of Jeanne Edman to bring these issues to campus visibility. Sandra mentioned the need to include the ‘Dreamers’ in the mission statement of Safe Spaces. Heather informed the committee that UC Davis actually has an institute to assist and inform the UC Davis Dreamers- the Undocumented Student Center.

Page 13: Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes · Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes ... Alex recommended the committee seek out Sargent Washington ... Social Responsibility

13

III. Day of Silence Update The possible dates include April 14 or 15th. Jesse Thibodeaux is considering reviving the GSA student group. It is hoped that the student committee will show a film to break the silence. Anastasia mentioned the showing of the film, “Breaking Through” either by streaming or through purchase. Laura and Anastasia will investigate this IV. SDO/Student Issues Morgan informed the committee of the consistent difficulties she and other students experience as they engaged with the SDO office. The office is not welcoming to new student club leaders, and most students feel intimidated to insist on their rights to form clubs. There are many disenfranchised students who do not feel welcomed in that office. Sandra and earlier, Jason, agreed to accompany Morgan in a visit to report on this situation to CRC president Dr. Bush. Morgan will consider this possibility. Anastasia explained that her anthropology students and Anthro club refuse to work with the SDO office because of these very same problems.

V. Darwin Day Update It was reported that Darwin Day went well in the Anthropology lab. It was ‘light on substance’; next year it is hoped that a speaker, tabling and other activities can happen.

VI. Earth Day update The committee expressed interest in participating in some way. There is the possibility of doing ‘A Billion Acts of Green”, such as signing a pledge, info about compost, recycling, tree planting. Sandra agreed to secure a ‘covered spot, and possibly show a film.

VII. Southern Poverty Law Center Sandra mentioned the interest in including this organization in some of ‘issue-discussion’ events – Mix it Up or similar events.

VIII. Speaker Event: Richard Wolff Alex mentioned the difficulty of securing enough money for the honorarium. Also, the student group, MECHA, are very interested in a Bernie Sanders support activity.

II. Last meeting’s minutes: Approved as corrected.

III. Union Report Jason informed the committee on the various union concerns, including student disruption, student mental health and campus safety. He explained at length the focus on the enrollment task force to find ways to increase student enrollment with dual enrollment, distance education, life-long learners and senior population. Other concerns include the smoking policy and the arrival of SUBWAY to CRC cafeteria.

IV. SDO/Student Report

Morgan Bishop reported her dissatisfaction with her experiences as a student leader and the SDO office. She feels that the atmosphere there is not welcoming, nor encouraging. The committee recommended she call the CRC president’s office to make an appointment with the secretary. The committee gave her the contact information. Morgan agreed that she would do this.

V. Safe Spaces Update The Elk Grove Center will sponsor the 2nd Safe Space Day event. It will take place March 2nd. There will be tabling from 10:30-1:30. Priscilla, Alex, Anastasia and Heather will be there.

that took place March 2nd. There are special challenges with the Elk Grove

center related to the setting and pace of student movement. The staff

however was very happy to have the event there. New strategies will be

explored to have more success. Morgan mentioned that although the Safe

Spaces events occur on CRC campus, the principles of Safe Spaces are not

practiced in the classroom to the point that many students don’t feel safe to

express themselves in class. Anastasia pointed out that most faculty are not

actively promoting Safe Spaces through their classes, either on the syllabus

or D2L, which is an effective way to reach students when they are paying

attention.

Laura Roccucci, on behalf of SRC, attended the March meeting for Health

and Facilities (Anastasia was unable to attend) and informed the board on the

progress of the gender inclusive restrooms. The progress included the UC

Davis signage change, and the current Assembly Bill # 1732 that requires

government and business buildings to include ‘all-gender’ amenities.

Signage samples were provided by Augustine at the Facilities meeting to be

used in LRC and SOC. The SOC main hallway restrooms will remain

accessible to everyone and would not be card-coded. Also, the new Student

Center will have single person restrooms in addition to multi-stall restrooms.

V. Day of Silence Update

April 13th was the selected date. The film: Breaking Through will be shown

to inform him of the unsatisfactory student experiences in SDO. The

committee will support Morgan in her decisions regarding how she will

handle the situation. Jason volunteered to send an email to the President’s

office.

VIII. Earth Day Event

Aden suggested that the SRC tabling provide information, flyers and other

sources regarding GMO’s. The committee thought this was an excellent

idea; Sandra Carter said she will reach out to local groups to solicit info

and materials.

IX. Other Issues:

It was mentioned that our next film series, in the fall, will focus on women’s

equity issues regarding wages, promotion and other inequities. The

committee suggested inviting a Los Rios Board of Trustee to a showing of a

film.

On the table will be Safe Spaces pledges and buttons and information regarding the gender- neutral bathrooms, recent anti-LGBT legislation, and fact sheets on how to be an Ally. Students will be invited to sign petitions condemning gender based violence in Tunisia (as part of an Amnesty International campaign). At 10:30-11:50, there will be a film screening of Breaking Through which chronicles openly LGBT politicians and their struggles both within and beyond elected office. The film will be hosted by Anastasia in WINN 255. It is hoped that Lauren Wagner will be able to show a short video that explores the philosophy of Day of Silence, or that the faculty would be encouraged to show the Thinkb4 You Speak campaign commercials.

V. Earth Day

Sandra informed the committee that she has obtained posters, stickers and other informational materials about GMO’s that will be passed out on the SRC information table on Earth Day. Morgan mentioned the idea of passing out tree seedlings during the tabling.

VI. Student Issues Morgan informed the committee that all the flyers she posted regarding the upcoming Atheist lecture at SCC have all been torn down. It isn’t clear what the motivations were, but the flyers are no long posted. The committee communicated the need to maintain an open market of ideas on campus and to allow a diversity of opinions to be expressed.

VII. Fall 2016 Film Series Topics The committee entertained various film topics: homelessness, women’s inequity, marginalized populations, aspects of media privacy. Nym mentioned the importance of exploring the commercial use of private student social media. Also, if the topic selected

Page 18: Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes · Social Responsibility Committee Meeting Minutes ... Alex recommended the committee seek out Sargent Washington ... Social Responsibility

18

is marginalized populations, Nym mentioned the names of local important speakers, such as Dr. Bruce Haynes, Dr. Jesse Hernandez and Rita Cameron Wedding, and Jackson Katz, a men’s violence expert.

III. SRC Film Series The next film, Girl Trouble, will be shown on April 28 by the Anthropology students.

IV. Safe Space Update: The tabling event for Day of UnSilence on April 12 in front of the cafeteria went very well. There were adequate materials, but the ‘collage’ project was not carried out. Also, there was an opportunity to sign in support of a pro-human rights initiative in Tunisia. The pace of student contact was irregular with spurts of students and then ‘dead time’. To support the Day of Silence (Unsilence), the film, Breaking Through, on openly LGBT politicians, was shown on April 12 and there were about 25 students who came to the screening, which was facilitated by Anastasia. Also, Lauren Wagner produced the short film on LGBT discrimination and bias felt by CRC students, which Safe Spaces encouraged faculty to show to their students. The three students profiled in the film were courageous to put their stories out there for everyone to hear. It was suggested that this event be repeated two times every semester. Also, the Safe Space program needs to be promoted at convocation to include more personnel. Finally, to do Safe Space tabling at Elk Grove, it would be better if the student clubs were involved.

V. Earth Day Update

The SRC will host a table during Earth Day with materials and bumper stickers relating to the anti-GMO movement. Sandra asked for student support to do the tabling. Heather suggested that the Sustainability students could do that.

VI. Student Issues: Morgan mentioned the need for the Safe Spaces program principles to be incorporated into the actual interaction in classrooms. She reported that many people feel ‘silenced’ on campus. The committee explored the idea of establishing a ‘venue’ for this type of topic that would empower

students to express themselves in a safe environment. Linda Sneed mentioned the possibility of the Union to sponsor such an event that addresses the issue of establishing safe spaces in classrooms. “Are You Silenced” was a possible title. Evan Nguyen, a representative of CRC Club and Events Board, came to the SRC meeting to learn about it.

VII. Union Update The committee asked Linda, the union representative, to explain in detail the difference between the Do’s & Don’ts List submitted by CRC president and the Do’s & Don’ts List submitted by the union. She will report back. Also, Sandra agreed to ask Shannon Dickson to clarify the ‘free-speech space’ on CRC campus.

VIII. Next Semester’s Film Topics The committee arrived at consensus to focus the next film series around marginalized populations. This would allow another showing of Breaking Through. This topic would allow films from various perspectives. Also, the committee members mentioned the need to get the film list and schedule out much earlier before the semester starts, so the faculty can plan their syllabi around these films. Sandra will send out the film list before the regular promotional material, i.e. flyers/posters are ready.

IX. Next Semester’s Speakers Sandra mentioned the possibility to invite speakers from the local Southern Poverty Law Center, Jackson Katz, from UC Davis and other local experts on the topic of marginalized populations.

April 27, 2016

I. Present

Sandra Carter, Tyler Elston, Jason Newman, Anastasia Panagakos

Students: Morgan Bishop, Laura Roccucci

II.

Last meeting’s minutes approved after corrected.

III. SRC Film Series Update

Sandra informed the committee that the film, Girl Trouble, had been cancelled

because the film wasn’t available, so Alex Peshkoff will be showing “It’s More

Expensive to Do Nothing in its place. This was a good resolution to the

predicament. Jason will show the film, The House I Live In, on May 11th.

IV. Safe Spaces Update

Anastasia reported that there was no immediate new news regarding the single-

use bathroom signage. Also, the short video produced for the Day of Unsilence

was so well-received that the RTVF department will produce a fuller video on the

same theme during the summer. This would take place July 13-14, so Safe

Spaces is looking for students to participate. SRC volunteered to cover costs

for publicity of up-coming Safe Spaces events in the Fall 2016.

V. Union Report

Jason gave a historical perspective regarding the two versions of the Do’s &

Don’ts document that addresses political activity on campus.

VI. Student Issues

Morgan confirmed that our campus will be smoke-free starting in August.

Also, she mentioned the need for ‘safe-space’ environments in classrooms.

VII. Fall 2016 Schedule/Membership

Sandra solicited the committee to consider next fall’s schedule and meeting times.

The current meeting schedule was not very satisfying, so next semester it is hoped

there will be more members able to attend as one group. Sandra will send out

requests from the committee regarding next fall’s meeting times.

VIII. Fall 2016 Film Series

The committee confirmed the topic of Marginalized Populations. Possible films

include East Side Sushi, Misrepresentations, The Canary Effect, Breaking

Through and others. The committee suggested finding a film that addresses

date rape on campus. Sandra will confirm these titles during the next SRC

meeting.

IV. SRC Speaker Series

The committee believed that the broad film topic would allow a variety of

perspectives on speaker selection. Speakers such as Byron Stewart, Jackson

Katz, Lacy Green and Anita Sarkeesian were mentioned. Sandra will seek out

these possibilities.

V. Other Issues

Tyler Elston mentioned the idea of coordinating a book with the SRC Film

Series. Some good titles include The New Jim Crow, Dog Whistle Politic,

A Time on Two Crosses. The committee thought this was an excellent idea.

Morgan mentioned the possibility of doing a ‘Privilege Walk’ event.

VI. Meeting Adjournment: Next Meeting: May 11, 2016 @ 12pm. This will be

the last meeting of the spring 2016 semester.

Respectfully Submitted,

II. Last meeting’s minutes:

Approved after spelling correction. III. SRC Fall 2016 Membership

The following committee members committed to participating next semester so far: Anastasia Panagakos, Heather Hutcheson, Jason Newman, Steven Coughran, Sandra Carter. Sandra mentioned that Amanda Procsal will join the committee. Sandra will solicit meeting times/days from the rest of the committee to confirm SRC Fall 2016 schedule. Jason mentioned the need to reach out farther in our campus to solicit and expand SRC membership. It was suggested that the committee host a ‘social mixer’ type event where the campus or Academic Senate is invited along with a local candidate or other community figure, such as a Los Rios trustee.

IV. SRC Spring 2016 Film Series

Jason reported that the showing of “The House I Live In’ went very well and was well-attended. In his opinion, he believes that the SRC film selections are comparable in quality and currency to other film series he has seen at UC Davis and other locations.

V. Union Report

Jason mentioned that an important concern at this time is salary advancement. He directed the committee to review the union contract. Also, a greater concern is the ‘bad dean’ phone calls by faculty, peer review unfairness and growing class size. He mentioned the current reference to ‘faculty’ as ‘staff’ and the controversy that surrounds this change. Some believe that conflating ‘faculty with staff’ is a way to unify employees; others believe it is a move to weaken the prominence of faculty in education. The union picnic was affected by the recent poor weather, and the union is considering changing the day of the picnic to Saturday.

VI. Safe Spaces Update

The coordination with Safe Spaces and Facilities is moving forward, regarding signage of bathrooms. The major concern is the lack of student access to the current bathrooms in SOC, LRC, and Winn buildings. Anastasia confirmed with Augustine Chavez that the signs for the SOC building would be changed, but he is still in discussions with the faculty and staff in LRC about those restrooms. Anastasia has concerns about the location of single-use bathrooms on campus and that they remain outside the regular access areas for students. She has asked Augustine for an update on new construction and where the single-use bathrooms will be but has not heard back.

VII. SRC Fall Film Series

Although the focus of the next film series will be ‘marginalized populations’ the actual title of the series has yet to be finalized. The title, such as, “Putting Equality into Equity” was considered. Sandra agreed to solicit more input regarding the title, and she will send out a confirmation list of possible film titles to the committee soon.

VIII. SRC Fall 2016 Events

The committee was informed about the current conflict that took place in the Vets Center, regarding the veterans and the current leadership in center. There may be some disciplinary action. The committee wanted to carry out an event that focuses on veterans’ concerns and issues. Anastasia mentioned the upcoming Welcome Day event, August 17, led by Emily Barkley. SRC and Safe Spaces will be present with tabling to pass out information and invitations. Also, Anastasia requested to copy Safe Spaces bookmarks to be available during this event. Sandra agreed to help with the copying funds. Another possible SRC event may focus on homelessness by enlisting Steve Watters, a CRC anthropology adjunct and executive director of the non-profit homeless advocacy group Safe Ground. Steve is interested in bringing the issue to the forefront at CRC and his topic would fit well into our Fall 16 film series.

IX. Adjournment: Next meeting: Fall 2016. The schedule is to be determined. Respectfully Submitted, Sandra Carter Social Responsibility Committee
