Self Verification

Definition

Effects

A social psychological theory that asserts people who want to be known and understood by others according to their own beliefs and feelings

towards themselves.

One will changes his or her attitude and behaviour in order to show the self that they would want others to perceive.

Shreya monologued that Cham didn’t appreciate her and understand her even though she has a pretty face, caring and loving personality. This

makes her doubt that how Cham has perceived her from the start. Is it the same as how she thinks of herself? This is called the self verification.

I’m pretty, considerate, caring and most

importantly, I treated him so good. Why didn’t

he appreciate me???

Self Serving Bias

Definition

Effects

The self-serving bias refers to a tendency for people to take personal responsibility for their desirable outcomes yet externalise responsibility

for their undesirable outcomes.

One will never learn their mistakes

Shreya monologued that she shouldn’t be the one crying and be sad of what had happened. She thinks that she’s not the one to be blamed. However, it is Cham who should be blamed. In this case, Shreya showed self serving bias as she take externalise responsibility for the undesirable outcome.

Why am I the one to be blamed. He should have blamed himself. Not me. I shouldn’t cry. I should

be happy that he’s gone.

Negativity Bias

Definition

Effects

Negativity bias describes a cognitive bias in which more attention and importance are placed on negative experiences and information.

The negativity bias is the phenomena by which humans give more psychological weight to bad experiences than the good ones.

In the flashback, Shreya tends to recall the negative stuff more than the good ones. This is called the negativity bias. Shreya choses to think of the bad and unpleasant memories. She unconsciously places a lot attention on

the negative experiences and information than the positive ones.

I’m so so so sorry that I’m late. I was

up with some stuff. I’m.. sorry.

Confirmation Bias

Definition

Effects

A confirmation bias is a type of cognitive bias that involves favouring information that confirms previously existing beliefs or biases.

First, it prevents people from looking at situations objectively. Secondly, it influences the decisions made. Lastly, it may lead to poor or faulty

decisions.

Gynie has confirmation bias towards all good-looking guys having a kind heart, loving and caring personality. This is explained as how Gynie

ignored Shreya’s advice and only listened to Giselle’s opinions.

They are so HOT!!! I think he winked at

me. OH MY GAWDDDD!!!

YAAAAAA!!! NO, I THINK HE WINKED

AT ME!!!DUHHHHH… STOP IT.

Stereotype

Definition

Effects

A fixed, over generalised belief about a particular group or class of people

One tends to ignore the differences between each and every individual.

After breaking up with Cham, Shreya have come to her own conclusion saying that all boys are irritating, inconsiderate, annoying, displeasing etc. She stereotyped all guys with those flirty, bad, vexatious ones like how she

think of her ex-boyfriend, Cham.

All guys like to complain, nag, and they are always

LATE! Trust me. All of them are the SAME.

Thank You!
