Great app makes sharing pretty, private photos all too easy. 15+

A popular platform for instantly enhancing photos and videos and sharing them across a number of social media platforms. “Users should be at least 13 and should not post partially nude or sexually suggestive photos” but do not prohibit the portrayal of violence, swear words, or drugs. Users can flag photos for review, but mature content still appears in some photos and in the comment sections. Photos shared in Instagram are public and may have location information unless privacy settings are adjusted. It is possible to save other users' photos.

Snapchat

Send moments in photos, watch curated content; use wisely. 16+

A popular messaging app that allows teens to exchange user-generated photos, texts, videos, and calls -- both audio and video. The developer claims that "Snaps" can't be saved within the app and are only viewable for one to 10 seconds before disappearing from the recipient's device, noting that the app notifies the sender if the recipient takes a screenshot of an image.

However, several third-party programs easily intercept and store any Snaps sent to the user, and users can buy replays of Snaps via in-app purchase, negating the "temporary" aspect of the service. The app has gained a reputation as a "sexting" app because outgoing (and incoming) pictures, videos, and texts are not stored on devices, but many teens use it simply to exchange fun, silly pictures.

Ask.fm & Ask.fm Website

Ask.fm website - Social Q&A with lots of objectionable content. 13+

The site doesn't monitor content, which opens the door for content that's inappropriate -- and that's very, very easy to find. Bullying has been a major concern in the past; the British news website MailOnline reported that the site has been linked to the suicides of several teens.

Ask.fm - Unmonitored social app with lots of objectionable content. 18+

Users ask questions and answer questions posted by other users. The site doesn't monitor content, which opens the door for content that's inappropriate -- and that's very, very easy to find on the site. There are also concerns about bullying. Users can, however, report questions or answers that are violent, pornographic, or contain hate speech.

Tumblr

Rich microblog collection includes iffy content for teens. 16+

A microblogging site that showcases a range of user-generated content including product ads, sexy images and ideas, depictions of drug use, and plenty of offensive language. The terms of service specify that Tumblr should not be used by children under 13, but the app stores rate it as mature and for 17 and older. Users can chat with each other if they follow each other's blogs, so it's possible that teens can chat with adults in real time. Educational value not rated.

Vine

Clever video app now connected to Twitter. 15+

Vine Camera is a camera app that lets users record six-second video clips and share them to Twitter or save them to their device. Previously, Vine was a social media app: You could post your own content, share videos via direct messages, and search for others' content.

However, since the app was purchased by Twitter, users can access their archived content on the Vine.co website but they can't add new content. Many of the archived videos are harmless, but parents need to be aware that many videos are full of content that is inappropriate for children.

Messenger

Messenger - Teens connect instantly to contacts; best with guidance. 16+

Messenger lets users text, voice-message, send video or photos instantly, or call contacts from their mobile devices. They also can use third-party apps, such as Messenger-specific versions of Talking Tom, Jib Jab or dozens of others to send short videos, GIFs, or other creations. As of 2016, users can also use "bots" -- artificially intelligent programs that can engage through text -- to buy goods and services and use the Instant Video feature to stream one-way live video. Users can send messages to individuals privately or to groups they've created. Unless the location notification is turned off, anyone who receives a message can see on a map where the sender is. GroupMe

Share unlimited content, but watch for unfiltered Internet. 15+

A messaging app that lets users send direct messages and group messages from mobile devices without message limits or fees. You can also use the app as a one-stop shop for interacting with your friends, from scheduling events to sending each other money. Its main claim to fame may be its emojis and open search for GIFs.

Some users like GroupMe for its stealth potential, since on-screen notifications pop up without content, which is appealing to some kids. Since there's no way to delete past posts, there are also concerns about a user's control over content.

Kik Messenger

Teens using social networking app will need safety guidance. 17+

An app-based alternative to standard texting as well as a social networking app for smartphones. It has some cool features but also some possible downsides for safety and privacy.

Kik users can download other apps with more features, such as video and a sketchpad, and users can see if their messages have been read by the recipients, which is a nice touch. That said, Kik should only be used by teens who can discern the difference between texting people individually, with groups, and within a social networking environment.
