The history of the square goes back to the Roman era, when a garrison was built here. In the 12th century the Babenberg duke Henry II Jasomirgott built a castle on the Roman foundations. The church was founded in 1386 by the Carmelite order. The Gothic facade was rebuilt in 1662 by the Italian architect Carlo Carlone. In 1806, after Napoleon had occupied Vienna, the end of the Holy Roman Empire was declared from the balcony of this church. In front of the church stands the Mariensaeule (Marian Column) commissioned by the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III to thank Virgin Mary for repelling the Swedish forces during the 30 Years' War. The column was built between 1664 and 1667 after a design by Carlo Carlone. Schloss (pl. The building was originally constructed between 1913 and 1915 asthe headquarters of a bank. This itinerary offers a sampling of palaces, schlosses and collections to be included, with other private visits that cannot be publicized.

The map shows the progression of the Habsburg dominions from 1282 to 1815... so this would have been the world as young John Soane knew it when it traveled to and from Italy on his Grand Tour.

SATURDAY, 2 MAY - VIENNA - We gather in the afternoon to start our understanding of the Habsburg’s power and splendor of their Empire.- Special private evening visit to the Albertina, with the Habsburg Staterooms spread out over two floors of thepalace. The magnificent Hall of the Muses forms the centrepiece, flanked on either side by State Apartments.- Dinner to follow.

SUNDAY, 3 MAY - VIENNA

- This morning we go to the Imperial Chapel of the Hofburg (the Imperial Palace). Here we will hear the ViennaImperial Court Music Ensemble, including the Vienna Boys’ Choir, members of the Vienna PhilharmonicOrchestra, members of the men’s choir of the Vienna State Opera.One must arrive no later than 9am and it lasts till 10:30am. - Special visit of the Kunsthistorische, one of the world’s greatestmuseums. The collections are based largely on those built up over thecenturies by generations of Habsburg monarchs. We then continuewith the Austrian National Library and to the Prunksaal (picturedright) with its special display of important manuscripts. The space issaid to be the most magnificent of Baroque halls in all of Europe.- Late lunch in a restaurant.- Private visit to the Imperial Kunstkammer and introduction to thearts patronage of the Habsburg family. - Dinner tonight in a private location.

MONDAY, 4 MAY - DAY OUT OF TOWN

- We depart this morning just to the north of the city, heading to theDanube river town of Klosterneuberg for the majestic monasteryperched overlooking the river (picrure left). Among the many treasuresat the monastery, there is the Verduner Altar, completed in 1181 andcomprising 45 gilded plates modeled on Byzantine paragons. Privatevisit to the library and collections with the Curator of Collections.- Prior to departure, we willenjoy brief visit and winetasting from the extensivecellars of the monastery.- We then head southeast

towards Bratislava to reach a magical spot. We will enjoy a privatelunch at the Schloss Rohrau (pictured right), where we will bereceived by the owners, Count and Countess Johannes Waldburg Zeiland by Countess Waldburg Zeil Harrach. After lunch enjoy a tour of their museum, with the celebrated Harrach collection, withmasterworks of the Neapolitan and the Spanish Schools. - Return to Vienna in late afternoon - the drive is less than one hour. - Informal dinner tonight.

TUESDAY, 5 MAY - VIENNA

- This morning we have two options: (1)Private visit to the Garden PalaceLiechtenstein (pictured left), residence ofHSH the Prince of Liechtenstein. Itsimpressive scale and unity of style had anenormous influence on the development ofViennese Baroque architecture. (2) Attend amorning exercise session for the famedLipizzan stallions at the Spanish Riding School– 10am to noon — TICKETS NOT INCLUDED.

- Lunch at the Italian Embassy at Palais Metternich. Among the most prestigious Italiandiplomatic missions, both for the historical interest of the building and the richness of theinterior. The building, designed as a square block with a rectangular plan, is inspired in itssolemn and austere monumentality of Rome’s Palazzo Farnese.- Visit to the Belvedere (pictured right), summer residence of PrinceEugene of Savoy. Standing at the highest point of the garden, the UpperBelvedere has an elaborate facade as it was intended to be a symbolicreflection of Prince Eugene’s glory, and was appropriate for the festiveoccasions for which it was originally used. In addition to the impressiveinteriors, the building now houses the collections of 19th and 20th centurypaintings belonging to the Austrian Gallery. One of the Belvedere’shighlights is the marvelous Judendstil collection by Gustav Klimt.

- This evening at your leisure and dinner on your own. This will allowpeople to partake in an evening performance if they wish. With several options, we thought it best to allowpeople to make their own plans.

WEDNESDAY, 6 MAY - VIENNA

- Private visit to the City Palace Liechtenstein (right),residence of HSH the Prince of Liechtenstein, and itsrenown collection of Biedermeier. This is the first majorbuilding of the High Baroque age, it boasts stucco ceilingswhich fuse with opulent Rococo Revival interiors, originalfurnishings and exquisite parquet flooring.- Visit to the Secession. In 1897, a group of progressiveartists including Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffman, Joseph M.Olbrich, Kolo Moser and Carl Moll founded the“Association of Austrian Visual Artists-Vienna Secession.” Building architect was Joseph Maria Olbrich (Photo below)

- We then shift our focus into the 20th Century andits architecture and art. We’ll enjoy a special tour ofthe MAK (Museum of Applied Arts), which acts asa showcase for Austrian decorative arts and as arepository for fine objects from around the world. And we’ll have lunch at the restaurant of the MAK.- Private tour of the apartment of a curatordecorated in the early 20th Century Style - Dinner at Palais Pallavicini received by Markgrafand Margräfin Edoardo Pallavicini. Built between1782 and 1784, the palace was Vienna’s first Neo-Classical building, imitating ancient Greek andRoman architecture. The formal façade is enlivened

by the impressive portal with caryatids by Franz Zauner. The owners, the Pallavicini family, still reside here today.

THURSDAY, 7 MAY - VIENNA TO PRAGUE

- Bags packed, we depart this morning on our drive toPrague. There will be stops along the way and lunch.- Arrive late afternoon/early evening. Check in to thedeluxe Aria Hotel.

HOTEL ARIA, a five-star property which enjoysexceptional views, and you can enjoy a short walk to someof Prague’s most impressive sights, including PragueCastle, the Charles Bridge, the Royal Gardens, St NicholasCathedral and the Old Town Square. The hotel alsoenjoys private access to the baroque Vrtbovska Garden(pictured right), and has a lovely roof terrace restaurantoverlooking the city. Each of the 51 hotel suites and rooms is dedicated to a specific style of music or to aparticular artist. - During our days in Prague your lecturer will be a well-knownarchitect Michal Ibl, who restored a number of historical buildingsthroughout the city and in the Czech Republic. Some of thespecial things that Stefano has been able to confirm for group arethat you will be received at...

- an embassy located in a historical palace

- the baroque Library of Strahov in a private visit

- the Castle of Nelahosevic, residence of Prince William Lobkowicz outside of Prague.

- a private visit at the in-town Palais Lobkowicz. This Palais was reopened by the Lobkowicz family in

2007, and holds works by Bruegel, Canaletto, Dürer, Rubens and Velásquez in its unique collection.

As Prague is a new edition to the itinerary, at the special request of travelers... details on our days are still being workedout. Our organizer, Stefano Aluffi-Pentini knows Prague extremely well and has a number of friends there - sowe are in good hands as he sorts out our final plans.

TOUR TERMS AND CONDITIONS

COST: Tour cost on this Soane Patron’s Circle program of 8-nights is $11,965 per person, based on double. An additional $750 tax-deductible donation is requested to Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation. Single room occupancy supplement is $1,150.

TOUR RATE INCLUDES: A deluxe private motor coach transportation is included. The trip will be fully escorted by staff of APrivate View of Europe / A Private View of Italy, and guided by local experts. Admission fees are included for sightseeing as described inthe itinerary.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS: Tour members are accommodated in superior or deluxe rooms. A limited number of singlerooms are available at an additional single supplement. MEALS: all breakfasts, all lunches (except one), all dinners (except one) are included daily; wine is included with lunch, dinnerand at receptions.TIPS AND TAXES: Included are service charges on hotels and restaurants as well as taxes levied by local governments andauthorities. Tips to drivers and guides are not included.

TOUR RATE DOES NOT INCLUDE: Transportation / flights to and from your home to Vienna or return from Prague;supplemental charges for single occupancy, additional wines / liquors / or other alcoholic beverages beyond those provided at receptionsand meals, are not included in the price.
