Snorkeling
• Snorkeling is a water sport that even
the non-swimmers can engage in.
• Because of the minimum effort it
requires, it’s applicable to all ages as
well.
• Many tourists visit Maldives just to do
snorkeling and to observe the amazing
marine life more closely.
Where To Snorkel
• In Maldives, each island is surrounded by its own reef, referred as a ‘house reef’.
• Most of these beautiful islands are inhabited.
• And few are designated as resort islands that permits tourists.
• The sunny and shallow areas are more appropriate for snorkeling, and you need to be cautious about the currents and wind in the area.
Best Time For Snorkeling
• Maldives has two main seasons, dry and wet.
• During the dry season, it is wetter, and has stronger winds and rain. This occurs from May to November. However this time attracts the large schools of hammerhead sharks and reef sharks to congregate since the water temperature is low.
• The dry season which is from November to February, is most appropriate for snorkelers, since there is a higher visibility in theses times.
Night Snorkeling
• Night snorkeling may not be the most heard activity, but it something you should definitely check out.
• The night-time creatures comes out of their hiding places when the sun sets over the Maldivian waters.
• During a night snorkeling trip, you will be able to see the plankton glowing in the dark.
• You will have to carry an underwater flashlight to explore the corals at night time.
Marine Life
• The main attraction of the tourists and snorkelers
are the Maldives' coral reefs and its marine life.
• Out of the world’s more than 500 coral species, more than 70 is present in Maldives.
• Among the species that live in the Maldivian waters are, Sharks, Tuna, Wahoo, etc. The Manta Rays and Whale Sharks often comes to the snorkeling-depth waters in the late summers and fall months.
Things To Know
• You have to make sure that your snorkel fits properly.
• Check whether the mask fits snugly into your face by breathing through the nose. The mask should not fall from your face when you lean forward.
• Select comfortable fins, and make sure they are not too loose.
• Make sure you check all these beforehand and fix them.
• Also, if you haven’t gone snorkeling before, it’s always advisable to get the help of someone who has experience, or a guide. Just to be on the safe side!
