Saturday Night Live & Racism

Page 3: SNL Presentation

Racism & SNL

• Saturday Night Live calls out American Society's obliviousness

to modern day racism with sarcastic skits that mock the

situation The Main Message: America fails to recognize the fact that racism still occurs today, and Saturday

Night Live uses comedy to portray that message

Page 4: SNL Presentation

"The Accidental Racist"

• Brad Paisley releases a song with LL Cool J that talks about the relationship between blacks and whites over the years

• Despite their good intentions, critics backfire and the song receives terrible reviews and crude comments

• SNL doesn't pass up the opportunity to make fun of the song as well

Page 5: SNL Presentation

Where Paisley and Cool J Went Wrong:

• Although they had nothing but good intentions in an attempt to end racism between blacks and whites...they went about it in the wrong way

• "If you don't judge my gold chains, I'll forget the iron chains."

• Racism is a sensitive subject, the way they approached the situation was in a simplistic and unrealistic manner.

• Saturday Night Live doesn't address the situation in a serious manner, instead they take a comedic approach when criticizing Brad Paisley and LL Cool J's work

Django Takes On SNL

• How Black Is That? ____________________________________

• Jamie Foxx hosts SNL and appears in a skit where he comments on "black people activities" that cause an uproar from critics and everyone that well......isn't black.

"President Obama was playing basketball on election day, how black is that?"

Page 7: SNL Presentation

"Tribal Racism"Definition: It is only okay for people of a

certain race to make fun of the race that they pertain to. For example, a Mexican can crack a joke about a Mexican, but if a white person states the same thing, it's not okay.

Hidden Message: SNL is emphasizing the fact that white people can never get away with making racist jokes. Which can work in both ways, Whites shouldn't be making those jokes, but neither should anybody else.

Cheerios Takes A Stand

• Cheerios recently released a commercial starring a biracial family, and the response from the American audience involved comments that were so hateful, the video was taken down from YouTube

• Just Checking

Page 9: SNL Presentation

America's Response

• Crude comments involving Nazi actions and "Racial Genocide" were visible on YouTube's comment boards for everyone to see. They became so bad that YouTube had to eventually disable the comment section on the video.

The Reality of Racism

-Racism still exists in America, and all over the world. We may have come a long way, but the idea of segregation still exists in some people.

• Saturday Night Live recognizes that, and calls America out on it with a comedic approach in their skits.

Page 11: SNL Presentation

• Professional Golfer Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren (Swedish Model) had a scandal that went viral in November 2009 leading to the couple's divorce in 2010

• Tiger woods allegedly had a multitude of extramarital affairs and more than 20 sexual activities with escorts

• Meanwhile, Woods had been involved in a "car accident" outside of their home, leading to a bruised Woods who had been removed from his vehicle by Nordegren... the rear windshield of the vehicle had been smashed with a golf club

SNL made a skit of the scandal, eventually making its way on the news!

Page 13: SNL Presentation

Kim Who? Kim K

• Kris Humphries and Kim had a ridiculous 72-day marriage and divorce was all over the tabloids and even legitimate news sources

• Nasim Pedrad does a great job by mocking Kim’s annoying voice and talking about how she’s been doing nothing but crying, posing and getting "her anus bleached" to cope with the "heartbreaking" divorce.

Page 14: SNL Presentation

SNL is meant for satirizing stupidly overblown stories like those that are associated with the Kardashian family, and that’s what makes it one of the funniest shows on television and why it has been around every week since 1975.

• SNL follows up with skits about celebrities and other public figures to keep viewers inclined

...and here is Kim Kardashian's most recent appearance in SNL!!!

Page 15: SNL Presentation

Kim K and Kanye

Page 16: SNL Presentation

"Fey’s Palin simply repeated verbatim the real Palin’s interview answers to Amy Poehler’s Katie Couric" (Purdum)

Do they look similar?...which one is tina fey??

Page 17: SNL Presentation

Result

• viewers are inclined to accept the presentation of public figures such as Sarah Palin, Tiger Woods, and Kim Kardashian since the interpretations are so on point

• As a result, "SNL" has an impact on their view of that public figure

Weekend Update

Page 22: SNL Presentation

Overview

•Fake News Skit Focusing on Current Events

•Features single anchor, parodies classical network news format

Clip

Page 23: SNL Presentation

Quick History of Fake News

•As early as 18th century British Newspapers

•Term “fake news” arose in America in 19th century

•Demand for news grew along with advances in technology and increase in population

•As demand for stories grew, so did propensity for fake news

•William Randolph Hearst and yellow journalism

Page 24: SNL Presentation

Thesis

•Weekend Update helped pave the way for the popularity of other fake news programs like the Daily Show

Page 25: SNL Presentation

How?

•First and most popular form of fake news–“From the start, the show's blend of political satire, social

commentary, and outrageous humor impacted the lives of 30 million viewers per week and changed overall television content” (Reincheld, 192).

–“Michaels and his group had created a segment that obviously had influenced not only other comedy shows but the news media, political campaigns, politicians, and how everyday Americans got their news” (Reincheld, 191).

Page 26: SNL Presentation

How?

•Put fake news into spot light and lent it credibility

–“In the 1985 book Amusing Ourselves to Death, author Neil Postman lamented that America had become a culture where leisure was king and no one paid attention to serious news anymore; in fact, few news sources presented the news the way it should be and instead packaged news as entertainment. To him, dessert was the main course of public discourse, and "SNL"-was a parfait” (Reincheld, 195).

Page 27: SNL Presentation

How?

•Created landscape for politically oriented parody and satire

–"I was very interested in politics and also in the show being taken seriously as a voice about politics," Michaels said. "I think people in Washington started to pay attention to it very early on because it was frankly about them, and so the influence was pretty early, but it was very definitely a priority and very important to me that the show be taken seriously” (Reincheld, 193).

Page 28: SNL Presentation

How?

•Openly criticized leaders (notably Gerald Ford)–Chase delivered this joke in 1975, "Commenting on the early

polls, Jimmy Carter said he didn't care much, but Ford's comments were, 'The Poles are an independent people and autonomous people, and I don't think they consider themselves to be under Soviet domination.'"''2 This influence took Sargent by surprise. "You'd talk to people who'd say, 'You changed my mind,' or, 'I didn't know about it,' and you'd say, 'But that was just a sketch or just a joke,' and they'd say, 'Yeah, but it told us something.'” (Reincheld, 195)

Page 29: SNL Presentation

How?

•Expanded parameters of what you could do/say on TV

–“New York Times' television critic John O'Connor attributed part of the show's strength to its daring and willingness to push the limits. ‘The general effectiveness of the show's political satire is directly related to its ability to be outrageous or simply naughty’” (Reincheld, 196).

Page 30: SNL Presentation

However...

•Weekend Update has never shared the degree of politicization the Daily Show has, thus rendering it a less significant source of political satire

–Update derives itself from a parody of the network news, while the Daily Show more closely mimics cable news

•“Update… continues the model of two news anchors at a desk, going through the “top stories” in order to set up one joke after another. As such, they bear little resemblance to the carefully produced packages that now dominate TV news” (Day, 179)

•“In contrast, the news package is a mainstay of the Daily Show…” (Day, 179).

Page 31: SNL Presentation

However...

–Update maintains set-up => punchline => move on format, while the Daily Show goes more in depth into segments

•“In this template (Update), the anchor quickly jumped rom story to story, creating a rapid succession of one liner jokes, most of which began with a true to life premise but were followed by a comically fictional twist” (Day, 173).

Page 32: SNL Presentation

However....

•Goals that each show tries to accomplish are different

–“Says (Lorne) Michaels, ‘We’re a big tent show. We bring a coalition of tastes. A cable show can do a 1 rating and be enourmously popular. We’re not that show’” (Day, 181).

–“… these programs (The Daily Show and Colbert Report)… dissect policy, breaking down the agenda behind political talking points, and point out where media coverage is lacking, often taking a particular stance on the issue” (Day, 180).

–“SNL has continued to rely on caricature for political humor…Rather than critiquing substantive policy issues, (Update’s) impersonations tended to focus on personality quirks and physical flaws” (Day, 173).

Page 33: SNL Presentation

Conclusion

•While Weekend Update played a major part in allowing for the emergence of other fake news programs like the Daily Show, Update itself has never been overly political, instead focusing mainly on laughs rather than commentary.
