Today’s inspiring leader realizes thatexternal perceptions are critical to lead-ing teams and successfully managingtheir own career. Understanding theimpact their reputation has in the mar-ketplace and intentionally marketingwhat makes them distinctive is what isreferred to as a personal or professionalbrand.

John A Byrne, editor of Fast Company, inthe 1997 signature story entitled: TheBrand Called You, argued that inspiringleaders should imagine themselves as

brands and manage their professional lives accordingly. That ideais every bit as relevant today as it was when first written. The dif-ference, as author Tom Peters points out, is that in good times, the brand called “YOU” was a luxury. In today’s rapidly changingeconomy, inspiring leaders have no choice but to aggressivelyand actively market their own personal brand in order to gainthe proper level of visibility required to lead effectively.

However, it is important for leaders to understand what types ofpersonal brand attributes must be possessed, developed and mar-keted in order to be recognized as a high-performing.

The following 12 business practices researched and developed byDenison Consulting in Ann Arbor, Michigan, outline what lead-ers today should aspire to in order to properly manage theirvisionary perception and professional brand.

Create Shared Vision –The leader helps create a shared view of adesired future state for his/her functional unit or organization. They inspire others with their vision, translate it into everydayactivities, and engage others to ensure buy-in and commitment.

Define Goals and Objectives –The leader encourages highemployee involvement and accountability in setting and accom-plishing organizational goals. They communicate a clear set ofgoals and objectives that can be linked to the mission, vision, and strategy of the organization.

Define Strategic Direction and Intent –The leader communicatesthe organization’s overall strategies in a way that everyone cansee the relationship between their work and accomplishment oforganizational goals. They effectively implement short and long-term strategies to meet organizational goals.

Define Core Values –The leader communicates and lives by a setof non-negotiable core values. They help define the organiza-tion’s culture, values and ethics, and help employees learn toapply the organization’s values when dealing with customers, stakeholders, and other employees.

Work to Reach Agreement –The leader helps to reconcile differ-ences when they occur by actively promoting constructive dis-

cussion of conflicting ideas, incorporating diverse points of viewinto decisions, and working toward win/win situations.

Manage Coordination and Integration –The leader ensures thatdifferent functions or units are able to work together to achievecommon goals. They establish necessary contacts and coordinateresources in other groups to prevent organizational boundariesfrom interfering with getting work done.

Empower People –The leader creates an environment whereindividuals have authority, initiative, and ability to manage theirown work. Employees in their functional unit or organizationhave a sense of ownership and responsibility for the organiza-tion.

Build a Team Orientation –The leader places value on employeesworking cooperatively toward common goals and often rely onteam effort to get work done. They establish a sense of mutualaccountability for the accomplishment of goals.

Develop Organizational Capability –The leader continuallyensures the development of employees’ skills and knowledge tomeet ongoing business needs. They effectively use the diversityin the work force.

Promote Organizational Learning –The leader encourages inno-vation, risk taking, and continuous improvement. They see mis-takes as opportunities for gaining knowledge and developingcapabilities.

Emphasize Customer Focus –The leader is driven to clearlyunderstand the present and future needs of the customer, seeksongoing input from the customer, continually strives to improvecustomer service, and ensures that all employees are driven by aconcern to satisfy the customer.

Create Change –The leader knows the organizational environ-ment, quickly reacts to current trends, and anticipates futurechanges. They continuously create adaptive and innovative waysto meet changing needs.

Each of us has differing levels of success in each of the leader-ship areas because leadership and managerial positions requirediffering strengths for organizations or functional groups toachieve their highest performance. What is most important isthat our leadership skills and traits are balanced, and clearly visi-ble throughout the entire organization.

Remember, understanding and properly managing our profes-sional reputation and brand environment, focuses accountabilityand creates exceptionally positive external perceptions.

Ultimately, this inspires today’s leader to consistently developtheir own internal talent, which is the highest distinction amongpersonal brand attributes.
