Early 2000’sSmashing positioned itself as a digital innovation agency, leveraging Flash to create engaging online experiences in the form of games, activities, immersive advertising, and websites.

Youth and family markets became a large focus, with clients including Disney, Kraft, and Nickelodeon.

2008-2009Focus evolved to the connected consumer that can access content from any device. Smashing created the user experience of a first-of-its-kind connected device for GE Security. By merging streaming and digital content, such as weather, lighting, temp control, and news headlines within a security console, users were able to access real-time information and customized control at their fingertips.

UX design for multi-screen engagements became a core business component. A technology-agnostic approach to solutions broadened our technical offerings, while our first apps appeared in the App Store, with several Top 10 chart appearances.

Nominated for a Primetime Emmy for the Disney Channel Broadband player on disneychannel.com.

2005-2007Smashing began to experiment in creating

content for multiple platforms, with the belief that consumers would demand rich,

engaging experiences on all screens.

Investment in mobile development and IP creation led to the launch of Smashing’s UK

office and a worldwide push to distribute content on carriers and devices.

New clients included Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Adobe, and Version.

1996Smashing was founded by

Evan Clarrissimeaux, Glenn Thomas, and Ben Yenter.

Focus was on Flash animation in the form of webisodes and taking traditional media

properties and expanding them into digital marketing events on emerging platforms.

called Motivational UX™, which applies decades of research in behavioral

psychology, user experience, and game design thinking to technology solutions.

Our continued implementation of current technologies led to the creation of

connected smart products, sensor and BLE integration, VR platforms, and machine-to-machine interactions.

2017-BeyondWith an eye on the expanding role of digital consultancies, Smashing’s services now include business strategy, service design, and end-to-end product lifecycle management.

Johnson ControlsProduct envisioning, user experience, and design for innovative, connected products.

Johnson Controls partnered with Smashing Ideas to advance their design processes to

accelerate innovation for new product lines. Value proposition definition and validation, product

envisioning, and idea generation workshops kicked-off the 14-month engagement. From there,

our strategy and design teams conducted diary studies, user interviews, contextual inquiries,

and testing with participants in four different states. This led to the creation of primary and

secondary archetypes, an experience map, six insight reports, and a set-point interaction

model to inform product design.

Additionally, we led customer journey mapping and engagement loop mapping sessions, which

resulted in high-fidelity prototypes after each three-week sprint. Final outcomes included

Smashing’s design team working closely with corresponding Johnson Controls staff to create

executable user-interface designs for new, innovative, connected products.

Philips Sonicare for Kids Establishing a lifetime of healthy oral healthcare habits.

We worked with the innovative team at Philips Oral Healthcare, makers of Sonicare, to design and develop a revolutionary tooth brushing experience for kids. It combines the latest in Bluetooth and sensory technology, our deep understanding of what motivates people into establishing new habits, and a giant dose of F.U.N. to help kids learn to brush better and more regularly. Our goal: create healthy oral healthcare habits that last a lifetime.

Kids adopt their very own Sparkly, a cute fur-ball in desperate need of brushing help. By helping Sparkly brush its teeth as they brush theirs, intrinsic and extrinsic motivators are triggered that prompt emotional engagement and long-term use.

Over time, kids feel empowered to use the connected device without the assistance of mom or dad, while parents are able to monitor their kid's brushing through a parent-friendly dashboard that follows strict COPPA guidelines. Brushing has become not only a habit and routine, but FUN, and Philips Sonicare for Kids is instilling great oral healthcare benefits that will last a lifetime!

Noteworthy

• 98% of parents agree that kids brush better with the Sonicare For Kids toothbrush and application

• Sonicare for Kids is 75% more effective than manual toothbrushes

• Development of an original, trademarked 3D character and game

• 4.5+ star average user rating

• Featured in: Tech Times, AdAge, Huffington Post, PC Magazine, Business Wire, Dentistry IQ, and many more!

Designing the future of complex training and simulationAn advanced educational experience within the engineering and manufacturing industry.

A Fortune 100 engineering and manufacturing giant sought to redefine a decades-old approach to the required – and extremely complex – maintenance training for their primary product. We believed a re-imagined approach to how training was created and delivered would increase student engagement, decrease costs to the company, create new revenue streams, and provide the same level of experience whether it was performed on-site in the manufacturer’s classroom, at a remote location, or in one of their buyer’s classrooms.

A critical component of the maintenance education was the need for a “hands-on” environment when the physical product was not available. A portable simulation experience that combined a custom, scalable software solution with a robust front-end user experience with enough stability and flexibility for new and expanding content was the basis of a refined digital learning experience. The digital training program can be deployed worldwide, and allows for students to move through the training at a pace that minimizes the learning curve, while maximizing proficiency and efficiency. Additionally, it has opened up new lines of revenue for our client and spurred new ways of thinking about innovation and creating value-added services for their business.

• The product was recognized by the CEO as a ‘best practice’ across the global organization

• The project became a benchmark for other innovation teams within our client’s organization

• Opened up new lines of revenue, while maintaining our client’s status as the world’s #1 leader in their field

Product and service envisioningHow we helped our Fortune 100 client enter and navigate a new market.

Our client, a global Fortune 100 technology and industrial company, needed help to quickly envision a new product strategy that would fuel business growth before their competitors left them in the dust. To expand into an uncharted business territory, our confidential client needed Smashing’s help to create a novel product strategy that would resonate with a new target consumer and leverage their current expertise in a way that still differentiated them from the competition. Our team gathered findings from large-scale academic studies, industry reports, and news articles, and reviewed 100+ competitor products and services. We analyzed our market research data to reveal consumer insights, identify market trends and opportunities, and future-cast what product features will be must-haves, performers, and delighters in the future years. Based on key takeaways from concept testing, we then modified our concept ideas to define a recommended approach that addressed all user feedback. Additionally, to help our client consider alternative business models, we performed breakeven analysis for several pricing strategies (e.g. monthly lease vs. one-time purchase, premium add-ons, etc.). The culmination of our work provided the client’s senior leadership team with a product vision and strategy that would capitalize on differentiated business opportunities and, effectively, a directional blueprint they could use to approach implementation.

Learn to QuitThe first smoking cessation application for the severely mentally ill.

In partnership with clinical psychologist, Dr. Roger Vilardaga, we planned, designed and built a revolutionary smoking cessation app for one of the most underserved segments of our population – the severely mentally ill. This demographic makes up nearly 45% of all cigarettes consumed in the United States, yet out of the more than 530 smoking cessation apps in-market, very few have gone through the rigors of clinical trials needed to address the very specific requirements for lasting treatment. Learn to Quit is based on Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), a new form of behavioral therapy that guides and coaches individuals as they learn to quit. Our design team translated these ACT techniques via visual storytelling to meet the precise needs of SMI. Case in point, to address the physical and behavioral limitations of the user group, we used a muted palette to lessen sensitivity to over-stimulation, buttons were created instead of swiping to account for users with pharma-induced tremors, and simple illustrations conveyed complex, abstract concepts. Learn to Quit is currently undergoing clinical trials and is funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

Noteworthy

• One of only 3 smoking cessation apps to go through clinical trials

• Large-scale clinical trials to begin early 2017

• Exclusive feature in Fast Company
